Ocean warming is speeding up and sea levels are rising mre quickly, warns a new reprt by the UN Intergvernmental Panel. The reprt als discusses a relatively new phenmenn in the ceans: marine (海洋的) heatwaves. "Befre 2012 r 2013, nbdy had thught abut heat waves in the cean," says Andrew Pershing, chief scientist at the Gulf f Maine Research Institute in Prtland. "Then in 2012 we had a huge event here. It was a real surprise." The abnrmally ht water influenced animals that live ff the cast f Maine and are imprtant t the lcal fishing ecnmy.
What's mre, it quickly became clear that the state wasn't alne. "This kind f heat wave events has sprung up all ver the cean," Pershing says. "We've actually had three majr heat waves here - 2012, 2016 and 2018 and nw we're lking at repeat heat waves in the nrthern Pacific; Australia has als had sme Repeat heat waves. S it's really becming a part f the cnversatin in ceangraphy."
That's a big deal fr castal cmmunities whse ecnmies depend n fish and ther seafd. Heat waves drve a lt f changes in life ff the cast f the Pacific Nrthwest, which in turn led t disastrus seasns fr fishermen. Abnrmally ht water supprted rapid increase f algae (藻类) that plluted the Dungeness crab fishery n the West Cast, shutting it dwn fr mnths. Meanwhile, the s - called ht water ff the cast has been cnnected with drught (干旱) n land, which has led t a large number f fish runs, raised the risk f wildfires and resulted in water stress inland.
The reprt suggests sme actins lcal, state and natinal leaders can take t slw cean warming and rising, and t adapt(适应)t its influences. First, greenhuse gas emissins(排放)frm burning fssil fuels are the main drive f these changes, and the glbal ecnmy must g thrugh a dramatic change t reduce these emissins.
"Even if we cut carbn emissins right nw, we are still lking at 20 t 30 years f change," Pershing explains. "That means, whatever we d, we have t figure ut hw we are ging t adapt t these changes."
Sme marine influences f climate change will unfld in the cming years n matter what. Speeding up sea level rise, fr example, will threaten billins f peple and present an existential threat t millins wh live in castal cmmunities and cunt n fishing.

They demanded the evacuatin(撤离)f the city, expecting a majr disaster. Their warning came five - and - a - half hurs befre an earthquake struck, resulting in 2,000 deaths. Withut the evacuatin, anther 150,000 peple culd have been killed.
"There are things we can't see and sunds we can't hear. But many animals can. 35. What are Prfessr Daniel Mills's wrds mainly abut?
