Fr centuries, peple have wndered why birds sing at dawn (黎明). Nw, a new study n zebra finches (斑马雀) suggests that althugh darkness stps birds frm singing, birds build up a strnger inner drive t sing in the lengthier night that causes them t burst int sng at dawn.

The team first pushed back the time at which the finches saw sudden bright light t 3 hurs later than the true dawn. The birds were awake but stayed silent in the artificial darkness, and when the lights finally did cme n, the birds sang mre strngly than usual. When the lights came n 3 hurs earlier than true dawn, the birds still started singing, but withut the same energy as when they were frced t wait.
In ther wrds, says Kjima, the lnger the time lag (时间间隔) between when the birds wake up and the nset f light, the strnger the birdsng.
“The birds are already awake in the dark befre the lights cme n,” he says. “But their natural singing is suppressed (抑制) by the darkness. This suppressin makes them want t sing even mre, leading t a high rate f singing immediately after the lights are turned n.”
While this study nly lked at ne type f bird, the similar thing may apply t thers, Kjima says. But Dieg Gil at the Natinal Museum f Natural Sciences in Madrid, in, warns us t be careful. There are “a great many differences between birds in hw, when and what they sing in the mrning singing”, he says.
