Skeptics are a strange lt. Sme f them refuse t admit the serius threat f human activities t the envirnment, and they are tired f peple wh disagree with them. Thse peple, say skeptics, spread nthing but bad news abut the envirnment. The “ec-guilt” brught n by the discuraging news abut ur planet gives rise t the ppularity f skeptics as peple search fr mre cmfrting wrldviews.
Perhaps that explain why a new bk by Bjrn Lmbrg received s much publicity. That bk, The Skeptical Envirnmentalist, declares that it measures the “real state f the wrld” as fine. Of curse, anther explanatin is the deep pckets sme big businesses with special interests. Indeed, Mr. Lmbrg’s views are similar t thse f sme Industry-funded rganizatins, which start huge activities thugh the media t cnfuse the public abut issues like glbal warming.
S it was strange t see Mr. Lmbrg’s bk g largely unchallenged in the media thugh his beliefs were cntrary t mst scientific pinins. One natinal newspaper in Canada ran a number f articles and reviews full f wrds f praise, even with the cnclusin that “After Lmbrg, the envirnmental mvement will begin t die dwn.”
Such ne-sided views shuld have immediately been challenged. But nly a different review appeared in Nature, a respected science magazine with specific readership. The review remarked that Mr. Lmbrg’s “preference fr unexamined materials is incredible (不可信的)”。
A critical (批判的) eye is valuable, and the media shuld present infrmatin in such a way that culd allw peple t make infrmed decisins. Unfrtunately, that is ften inaccessible as blcked by the desire t be shcking r t defend sme special interests. Peple might becme half-blind befre a wrld partially exhibited by the media. That’s a shame, because matters cncerning the health f the planet are far t imprtant t be treated lightly.
4. Accrding t the passage, which f the fllwing may be regarded as “skeptics”?
A. Peple wh agree n the ppularity f “ec-guilt”.
B. Peple wh disbelieve the serius situatin f ur planet.
C. Peple wh dislike the harmful effect f human activities.
D. Peple wh spread cmfrting news t prtect ur envirnment.
5. Which f the fllwing can be a reasn fr the ppularity f Lmbrg’s bks?
A. Sme big businesses intend t prtect their wn interests.
B. The bk challenges views abut the fine state f the wrld.
C. The authr cnvinces peple t seek cmfrting wrldviews.
D. Industry–funded media present cnfusing infrmatin.
6. The authr mentined the review in Nature in rder t_____.
A. vice a different pinin
B. find fault with Lmbrg’s bk
C. challenge the authrity f the media
D. pint ut the value f scientific views.
7. What is the authr’s main purpse in writing the passage?
A. T encurage the skeptics t have a critical eye.
B. T warn the public f the danger f half–blindness with reviews.
C. T blame the media’s lack f respnsibility in presenting infrmatin.
D. T shw the imprtance f presenting verall infrmatin by the media.

We all knw that being verweight is nt great fr yur health — it’s linked t metablic (新陈代谢的) diseases like diabetes and cardivascular (心血管的) prblems. But weighing yurself wn’t tell yu all yu need t knw abut yur disease risk. A friend f mine is a super-fit marathn runner. She’s all lean muscle. And yet accrding t her bdy mass index (BMI), which is a measure f weight relative t height, she’s verweight. Which is frankly ridiculus. The BMI is deficient. S what shuld we be using instead?
First, let’s talk abut fat — the mst demnized f all bdy cmpnents. Fat is stred in adipse tissue (脂肪组织), which has sme really imprtant rles. It cnserves energy, maintains ur bdy temperature, and serves as a prtective layer fr ur rgans. It als prduces a whle hst f imprtant substances, frm hrmnes that cntrl ur appetite t chemicals that influence the way ur immune systems wrk.
Hwever, nt all fat is equal. It’s the visceral fat — the type surrunding yur rgans — that is thught t be mre harmful t yur health, if there’s t much f it. Having mre visceral fat has been linked t an increased risk f diabetes and cardivascular disease. (That relatinship isn’t straightfrward either, thugh; studies have shwn that remving this “excess” fat desn’t imprve metablic health.) Either way, having a gd idea f hw much fat is in yur bdy, and where it is, wuld be valuable. It might at least give us sme idea f ur risk f metablic disrders. There are quite a few different ways f measuring this.
BMI is the mst widely adpted. It’s the fficial measure the Wrld Health Organizatin uses t define verweight and besity. Unfrtunately, it desn’t tell yu very much abut the fat in yur bdy r hw it crrespnds t yur health. After all, yur bdy weight includes yur bnes, muscles, bld, and everything else, nt just yur fat. Instead, Emma Börgesn, wh studies cardimetablic disease at Aarhus University in Denmark, and her clleagues recmmend the SAD measure, a measure f the size f a persn’s belly frm back t frnt.
8. What des the underlined wrd “deficient” in paragraph 1 mean?
A. Faulty.B. Accurate.C. Essential.D. Wrthless.
9. What des paragraph 2 mainly talk abut?
A. The types f fat. B. The impact f fat.
C. The functins f fat.D. The cmpsitin f fat.
10. What can be inferred abut the visceral fat?
A. It is the mst harmful fat in the bdy.
B. T much f it may lead t health issues.
C. It is clsely related t metablic disrders.
D. Remving it can lwer the risk f diseases.
11. What might be discussed in the fllwing paragraphs?
A. The cmparisn between the SAD and ther measures.
B. The advantages f using the BMI ver ther measures.
C. Persnal experiences abut the weight lss jurneys.
D. Detailed explanatins f the alternative methd SAD.
D
“Calling all. This is ur last cry befre ur eternal silence.” With that, in January 1997, the French cast guard transmitted its final message in Mrse cde.
Wrecked ships had radied ut SOS signals frm the era f the Titanic. In near-instant time, the beeps culd be decded by Mrse-cde statins thusands f miles away. First used t send messages ver land in 1844, Mrse cde utlived the telegraph age. But by the late 20th century, satellite radi was turning it int a dying language. In February 1999, it fficially ceased being the standard fr maritime cmmunicatin.
Nestled within the Pint Reyes Natinal Seashre, nrth f San Francisc, KPH Maritime Radi is the last peratinal Mrse-cde radi statin in Nrth America. The statin — which cnsists f tw buildings sme 25 miles apart — nce watched ver the waters f the Pacific and Indian Oceans. It shut dwn in 1997, but a few years later, a cuple f radi enthusiasts brught it back t life. The grup has gtten slightly larger ver the years, wh call themselves the “radi squirrels”. Every Saturday, they beep ut maritime news and weather reprts. Much f their cmmunicatin is with the SS Jeremiah O’Brien, a Wrld War II-era ship permanently parked at a San Francisc pier.
Last July, the phtgrapher Ann Hermes visited these “radi squirrels” and stepped int their time machine. T send a message, they tapped each Mrse-cde letter int a gadget, generating a lud nise that repeated thrughut the whle building. “It’s almst like jazz,” Hermes tld me — a music f rhythm and timing that can sund slightly different depending n wh is ding the tapping. Sme f the machines date back t Wrld War II. The “radi squirrels” d their wn repairs, and search eBay fr replacement parts n the newer units.
Thugh many f the “radi squirrels” are retired r nearing retirement, Mrse cde is nt quite extinct: The U.S. Navy still teaches it t a few sailrs. Besides, in 2017, a British man wh had brken his leg n a beach used it t signal fr help in the dark with a flashlight.
12. What was Mrse cde used fr in the era f the Titanic?
A. Warning the cming f ttal silence.
B. Sending a signal fr help r rescue.
C. Saving an endangered language.
D. Setting a standard fr cmmunicatin.
13. What des the underlined phrase “radi squirrels” refer t?
A. The frmer staff f KPH Maritime Radi Statin.
B. The crew f ship wreckage in San Francisc.
C. Thse particularly passinate abut radi stuff.
D. Thse expert at playing instruments and jazz.
14. The Mrse cde machines can still be in gd cnditin thanks t __________.
A. the frequent use by the “squirrels” t beep ut news
B. the cnstant cmmunicatin with experienced peratrs
C. the repair and restre effrts made by the “squirrels”
D. the prtectin and maintenance made by the U.S. Navy
15. Which f the fllwing can be the best title f this passage?
A. Keep the “Jazz” Ging
B. The Last Call frm Sea
C. Vlunteers f Pint Reyes
D. A Farewell t Radi
