While sme cmpanies are making what they state is bite-prf clthing, the clthing includes sme harmful chemicals r is made f thick fabrics that are t ht t wear and are easily beaten by msquites. That’s because there are hles in the makeup f their fabrics that msquites and ther biting insects can get thrugh.
The key is t discver a fabric that can remve these hles and is still cl enugh t wear in ht weather. “That is the reasn why this prject is nt as easy as peple think,” said Beckmann. “Yu bviusly need yur clthes t be breathable. But that usually cmes at the cst f letting msquites bite thrugh them. S the basic prblem is keeping the hles there while blcking tiny msquit muth-parts at the same time. “The team tried by using a cmputer numerical cntrl knitting(编织) machine that culd be prgrammed with different designs until they fund a bite-prf ne. The end result is a prduct that the researchers cmpare t ppular high-quality athletic wear.
But the researchers are still nt satisfied and will be spending the next year perfecting the cmfrt f the material and finally creating a clthing line. When yu think f 3D printing, yu may think f small bjects. But three cmpanies are wrking tgether t print smething much bigger. They’re using a giant 3D printer t create what they say is the first tw-strey 3D-printed huse in the US.
Usually, 3D printing invlves a machine building smething by putting dwn many layers f a material—ften ht plastic. When the material hardens, the layers stick tgether t create a finished bject. The methd here is similar, but uses cncrete.
Leslie Lk, wh designed the huse, says there are special challenges invlved in printing a tw-strey huse. One f the biggest is the size f the machine needed fr the building. The 3D printer in Hustn is massive. It weighs ver 12 tns.
Ms Lk says printing the huse will take the massive machine abut 330 hurs. That’s abut eight nrmal wrk weeks. Thugh it’s a tw-year prject, the team isn’t in a rush. “We are nt trying t beat the clck,” says Hikmat Zerbe, wh wrks fr a cnstructin cmpany called CIVE. Instead, they're using the huse as a “big labratry” t learn mre abut 3D printing huses. They want t see hw the cncrete reacts “under different weather cnditins”. They als want t figure ut hw t make 3D printing faster and cheaper. Mr Zerbe says that currently, 3D printing a huse with cncrete csts mre than building a huse with wd.
With time, Mr Zerbe expects the csts f 3D printing huses t g dwn. He thinks printers will imprve and make it easier t create mre huses quickly. The 3D-printed cncrete huses are strnger and hld up better in serius strms than huses built with wd. This can save mney in the lng run. Since the machine is ding the building, fewer wrkers are needed, which als saves mney.
