二、阅读理解
At first sight, Easthpe desn’t seem much like a Cassandra. She smiles a lt. Her manner is kind and mtherly; pushed t name her prfessin, yu might guess at nurse r teacher. But lk clser.
Easthpe is an emergency planner whse jb is t supprt the survivrs f majr disasters, in which capacity she acted fllwing the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami and the fire at Grenfell Twer. Fr tw decades, the public knew nthing abut this vital wrk, which went n behind the scenes, thugh she was hugely admired in what we might call prfessinal disaster circles: a vice f calm and a funtain f wisdm. But in 2023, she published a best-selling bk abut her career, When the Dust Settles, and that changed. Peple became very interested in what she did.
“At literary festivals, mst authrs get questins abut their writing prcess,” Easthpe says. “But I wuldn’t get thse. What peple wanted frm me was t knw hw I lived with the knwledge that I have. Wasn’t I afraid? Hw did I handle? I wuld tell them that I didn’t live afraid, and I wuld give them basic advice. But this wasn’t enugh.” In the end, she felt she had n chice but t write a secnd bk, ne in which she wuld try t distill (浓缩) all that she has learned fr the benefit f each individual.
While her publisher describes Cme What May as a radmap fr resilience (韧性), the wrd is ne Easthpe dislikes. Ready, she suggests, is a better ne. Easthpe als reminds peple that small things, like lsing hair during illness r cnsuming t much fd after smene dies, still matter. She encurages peple t remember, nt t frget, what happened during disasters, because such events leave a lng-lasting effect.
21.What might a Cassandra be like accrding t paragraph 1?
A.Severe and frbidding.B.Cmpetent and cautius.
C.Friendly and energetic.D.Cheerful and apprachable.
22.What led t increased public awareness f Easthpe’s wrk in 2023?

C.Her invlvement in 2004 tsunami relief.D.Her sudden rise t fame thrugh media.
23.Why are readers’ questins cited in paragraph 3?
A.T reveal Easthpe’s persnal fears.B.T explain Easthpe’s writing prcess.
C.T shw Easthpe’s writing mtivatin.D.T present public dubts abut Easthpe’s wrk.
Recently, campaigners have encuraged us t buy lcal fd. This reduces ‘fd miles’, that is, the distance fd travels t get frm the prducer t the retailer. They reasn that the higher the fd miles, the mre carbn emissins. Buying lcal fd, therefre, has a lwer carbn ftprint and is mre envirnmentally friendly.
Hwever, the real stry is nt as simple as that. In fact, imprted fd ften has a lwer carbn ftprint than lcally grwn fd. Take apples, fr example. In autumn, when apples are harvested, the best ptin fr a British resident is t buy British apples. Hwever, the apples we buy in winter r spring have been kept refrigerated fr mnths, and this uses up a lt f energy. In spring, therefre, it is mre energy-efficient t imprt them frm New Zealand, where they are in seasn. Heating als uses a lt f energy, which is why grwing tmates in heated greenhuses in the UK is less envirnmentally friendly than imprting them frm Spain, where the crp grws well in the lcal climate.
We must als take int accunt the type f transprt. Transprting fd by air creates abut 50 times mre emissins than shipping it. Hwever, nly a small prprtin f gds are flwn t the cnsumer cuntry, and these are usually high value, perishable items which we cannt prduce lcally, such as seafd and ut-f-seasn berries. Even then, these fds may nt have a higher carbn ftprint than lcally grwn fd. Fr example, beans flwn in frm Kenya are grwn in sunny fields using manual labur and natural fertilisers, unlike in Britain, where we use il-based fertilisers and diesel machinery. Therefre, the ttal carbn ftprint is still lwer.
It’s als wrth remembering that a prduct’s jurney des nt end at the supermarket. The distance cnsumers travel t buy their fd, and the kind f transprt they use will als add t its carbn ftprint. S driving a lng way t shp fr fd will negate any envirnmental benefits f buying lcally grwn prduce. Furthermre, chsing lcal ver imprted fd can als badly affect peple in develping cuntries.
Recently, sme supermarkets have been trying t raise awareness f fd miles by labelling fds with stickers that shw it has been imprted by air. But ultimately, the message this gives is t simple. Lts f different factrs cntribute t a fd’s carbn ftprint besides the distance it has travelled. And even if we nly buy lcal fd which is currently in seasn, there are ethical implicatins. What’s mre, ur diets wuld be mre limited.
24.What is the main idea f this passage?
A.The imprtance f buying lcally prduced fd.
B.The advantages f imprting fd frm verseas.
C.The reasns why fd miles campaigns are t simple.
D.The prblems caused by transprting fd.
25.Accrding t the passage, hw are Spanish tmates and Kenyan beans similar?
A.They are bth transprted by air.B.They are bth grwn using natural fertilizer.
C.They bth have high carbn fdprints.D.They are bth grwn utdrs.
26.Which f the fllwing des the writer nt supprt?
A.Making a lng jurney t buy fd prduced lcally.
B.Supprting farmers in pr cuntries.
C.Imprting apples t Britain frm New Zealand in spring.
D.Buying beans imprted by air frm Kenya.
27.The writer thinks that labelling fd which has been transprted by air _________.
A.will raise envirnmental awareness.B.helps peple t shp mre ethically.
C.des nt tell a full, accurate stry.D.gives false infrmatin abut the prduct.
Hneybees can detect the unnticeable smells f lung cancer in the lab — even the faint smell f disease flating frm a patient’s breath. Inspired by the insects’ sharp sense f smell abilities, scientists cnnected bees t electrdes, passed different smells under the insects’ antennae (触角) and recrded their brain signals.
“Different smells sparked recgnizable brain activity patterns. One day, dctrs might be able t use hneybees in cancer clinics as sensrs fr early disease detectin,” said Saha, a neural engineer at Michigan State University in East Lansing.
Hneybees were held in place with 3D-printed plastic harnesses while the researchers perfrmed bee brain surgery, attaching wires t the regin that prcesses smells. A device delivered streams f air t the insects’ antennae. Each stream culd cntain mixing smells, such as thse breathed ut by healthy peple. Anther mixture cpied lung cancer patients’ breaths, undetectable t human nses. Using electrical signals read frm the bees’ brains, researchers culd distinguish between the tw types f breath.
In a separate experiment, Saha’s team cllected air remaining abve lung cells grwn in the lab. The bees culd successfully tell the difference between the air samples taken near healthy cells and thse gathered near cells f tw cancer types: small-cell lung cancer and nn- small-cell lung cancer.
Onging wrk in Saha’s lab has als revealed that bees’ smelling ability extends t ther trace smells, like thse emitted by perfluralkyl and plyfluralkyl substances, cmmnly knwn as PFAS, r frever chemicals. “That actually blew my mind,” Saha says. “PFAS in the envirnment are very hard t detect.”
Saha’s team hpes t use the bee smell sensr t test the breath f cancer patients. “The device’s biggest flaw is that it lasts just a few hurs befre the bees’ respnse becmes unstable,” he says. “But it wrks fast and spits ut results in real-time. With just ne bee, my team culd theretically buzz thrugh mre than 100 samples.”
28.What were the bees expsed t in the experiments?
A.Printed plastics.B.Surgical tls.
C.Lung cancer cells.D.Different breath r air samples.
29.What aspects f the research are discussed in paragraph 3?
A.Its findings.B.Its methds.C.Its applicatins.D.Its influences.

A.Sensitive.B.Limited.C.Ordinary.D.Unreliable.
31.What des the underlined wrd “flaw” in the last paragraph mean?
A.Feature.B.Weakness.C.Benefit.D.Cntributin.
Sil as an Antidepressant: Fact r Fictin?
Many gardening claims spread nline, but ne has becme particularly ppular: “Sil is an antidepressant.” Accrding t this idea, supprted thrugh cuntless scial media psts, Mycbacterium vaccae — a micrbe (微生物) naturally fund in sil — can actually bst yur md. All yu apparently have t d t experience this benefit is get yur hands in cntact with earth. The bacteria are said t be absrbed thrugh yur skin r breathed in frm the air, and they will quickly get t wrk transfrming yur brain chemistry fr the better. But is all this a bit t gd t be true?
Althugh the claim may initially seem a little utlandish, there have actually been a range f studies investigating the effect f this micrbe n a variety f cnditins, frm eczema t cancer. In fact, Mycbacterium vaccae was first extracted in sil samples frm Uganda by scientists in rder t find a harmless clse cusin f the deadly Mycbacterium tuberculsis that culd be used as a frm f immuntherapy (免疫疗法). Scientists became mre interested in its pssible effects n depressin when lung cancer patients receiving the bacteria reprted feeling better verall. Several careful studies appeared t cnfirm these md-imprving effects, leading t widespread sharing f this infrmatin nline.
Hwever, there’s an imprtant limitatin: all the studies specifically testing the depressin thery were dne n mice, nt humans. In these experiments, researchers either injected (注射) the bacteria int the mice’s bld r added it t their fd. This matters because results frm animal studies ften dn’t wrk the same way in humans. Fr example, ne analysis f 76 animal studies fund that nly 37% prduced similar results when tried with peple. Additinally, all the mice in these studies were males f the same special breed. The bacteria weren’t breathed in r absrbed thrugh the skin — they were given in pure frm directly int the bdy.
As smene interested in hw nature affects mental health, I’m excited t see what future research reveals. Hwever, despite the cnfident claims nline, we can nly say that “sil is an antidepressant” if yu’re a specific type f male muse that has been injected with pure bacteria frm sil — and since yu’re reading this, I assume yu’re nt.
32.What des the underlined wrd “utlandish” mst prbably mean in paragraph 2?

34.What is the key limitatin f the studies mentined?
A.They nly invlved human participants.
B.They were cnducted nly n specific mice.
C.They didn’t use purified frms f bacteria.
D.They fcused nly n skin absrptin.
35.What is the authr’s attitude tward the “sil is an antidepressant” claim?
A.Cautius.B.Disapprving.C.Supprtive.D.Uninterested.

I’ve learned s much frm the peple I’ve wrked with, and their knwledge has been key t bringing real change. Later in my talk, I’ll intrduce sme new techniques we’ve recently develped t help speed up restratin effrts, but first, I’d like t tell yu mre abut the wrk we did and what we learned alng the way. After my presentatin, I’d be happy t take any questins.
