She spent 26 mnths in seven different hspitals, at times wishing it wuld just all end.
Desperately, Wheatley set ut t find cmfrt and healing (康复) in nature. She travelled t Nepal where a friend persuaded her t run in the Annapurna 100 with him. The pwer frm that race changed her life and eventually had her lking up at the tps f the muntains. Prject Visin 8000 was brn. And she began her missin t stand n tp f the wrld’s 14 highest muntains, rising 8,000 metres abve sea level, t shw herself and thers the pwer in chice and pssibility.
Clrs and tuch help guide her n the muntain and she has never nce felt t tired t carry n. “The nly cnstant thing is change, s when the weather gets really bad r a strm is cming in, I knw it is ging t pass.” S far, she’s had few prblems standing amng giants, but she admits she cntinues t struggle with vercming the “muntains f her mind”. Having already stared death in the face, Wheatley has great respect fr the muntains and the missin she is n. But she’s nt scared. Imagine yu are driving n a strmy night, and yur car suddenly warns yu f the danger f an upcming fld r an appraching hurricane. This future, where cars predict weather disasters well in advance, is edging tward reality, says the Internatinal Drivers Assciatin. By 2030, cars are expected t develp int“smart machines” in which reliable, persnal weather frecasting units are integrated int, with advanced sensr technlgy and machine learning algrithms (算法) delivering real-time, exact weather updates.
“Bridging the gap between vehicular technlgy and meterlgy (气象学) hlds massive ptential in increasing rad safety,” says Juliana Marshall, a travel expert frm the Internatinal DriversAssciatin.“Imagine yur car warning yu f truble ahead and then directing yu away frm a rad that’s abut t be flded r a bridge at risk f falling dwn due t strng winds. That’s a breakthrugh we’ re keenly lking frward t.”
Several key factrs lay the grundwrk fr these weather-predicting abilities in cars by the year2030.
Mdern cars have cmplex sensrs that can measure atmspheric pressure, temperature, humidity (湿度), and wind speed. These sensrs can feed data int an nbard cmputer, prviding crucial real-time weather infrmatin. Cutting-edge artificial intelligence and machine learning technlgies can nw analyse cmplex weather patterns and predict future utcmes. By integrating these technlgies int car systems, yur car’s cmputer can prvide frecasts alng yur rutes.
The intercnnectivity f devices, knwn as the Internet f Things, will play a key rle. Cars culd share and receive weather data frm a vast netwrk f the cnnected devices, imprving accuracy f predictins. Such tech-integrated cars will make driving during severe cnditins safer while imprving the verall travel experience.“Weather predictin in cars can save hundreds f lives per year by minimizing the likelihd f weather-related accidents,” Marshall emphasizes.“Getting hands n a car built with weather predictin technlgy might be ptinal (可选择的) tday but will becme imperative by 2030.”
Undeniably, 2030 prmises the arrival f a changing age in car technlgy, a wrld where yur car might just be yur best weather frecaster. An age where“the future is nw” is nt just an exciting prspect—— it’s the nrmal.

I am addicted t Instagram, particularly t its bkish cmmunities. I can’t pen the app withut seeing a meme (梗图), artwrk r qute abut ne f my favrite bk series. But my Instagram feed is flded with AI “art” — thugh t me, it is nthing but plagiarism (剽窃). Instagram seemingly has n prblem with highlighting AI “artists”, which t me is a harm t real artists.
Each AI “art” pst takes the place f a bkish artist wh spent cuntless hurs creating truly amazing artwrk. As a jurnalist and future educatr, I can’t view AI “art” as anything but plagiarism because it is cllected frm artists wh have nt agreed t the use f their wrk, nr d they receive credit fr it.
Fr creatives like Brnwyn Lipka, a 25-year-ld bkish artist, the reality f having their wrk stlen is ever-present. “AI ‘artists’ are essentially stealing yur art, but there’s n way t knw if they’re ding it because they face n cnsequences,” Lipka said.
And it’s nt just the AI “artists” that are cntributing t this culture f irrespnsibility. Meta, the parent cmpany f Instagram, cnsiders public Instagram psts t be part f its training data — including generative AI art training. Artists must decide whether cntinuing t use Meta apps, where they’ve built up a fllwing, is wrth AI stealing their intellectual prperty (知识产权).
Many f my favrite artists have made the mve t a platfrm that des nt use AI mdels n user cntent. Ultimately, if artists cntinue t leave Meta platfrms, the bkish cmmunity will struggle. Wrse, if the bkish cmmunity starts t fade, bk sales will drp sharply right dwn with them.
Thugh I am nt against AI and aware that it has the ptential t d sme really great things, I cannt stand fr the cntinuus lack f frethught in deciding where and when it shuld be used. Therefre, I urge Meta and any ther cmpanies intrducing AI int their prgramming t cnsider the ethics f ding s, befre it’s t late.
7. What des the authr try t say in the first paragraph?
A Artists feel ashamed f plagiarism.
B. Instagram is a widely used platfrm.
C. The AI-created wrks take ver Instagram.
D. The bkish cmmunities need imprving.
8. What can be inferred frm Lipka’s wrds in paragraph 3?
A. AI “art” wn’t take the place f real art.
B. Artistic cmpetitin is becming serius.
C. Bkish artists are lsing wrk wnership.
D. AI “artists” are getting away with stealing art.
9. Hw des Meta’s use f Instagram psts affect artists?
A. It drives them t leave Meta platfrms.
B. It gives them access t a wider audience.
C. It increases their bk sales significantly.
D It destrys their faith in intellectual prperty.
10. What is the text mainly abut?
A. A rising tendency f creating art with AI.
B. Artists’ struggle fr recgnitin in the AI age.
C. The balance between AI and human creativity.
D. A call fr prtectin f human artists against AI art.

Dumb phnes (非智能手机) are making a cmeback
It is hard t imagine life withut a smartphne these days. Nine in ten American adults wn ne, and they spend 3 hurs and 45 minutes n them a day, n average. New versins updated with artificial intelligence may be even harder t put dwn.
Yet a market is als grwing fr phnes that are simple-designed. These dumb phnes accunt fr just 2% f phne sales in America. But demand is grwing. In 2016, a Finnish firm bught the rights t relaunch the devices f Nkia, which is nw selling “tens f thusands” f flip-phnes (翻盖式手机) a mnth in America.
Dumb phnes tday d nt nly cpy thse f the past, thugh. Startups ffer simple-designed devices f their wn. One example is the Light Phne, which is shaped like an iPd and has an e-ink screen like a Kindle. It als allws users t add ptinal “tls” including a pdcast-player and a directins app.
What explains the return f the dumb phne? One factr is anxiety ver the impact f smartphnes — and scial-media apps in particular — n yung peple’s mental health. That is why Etn, a well-knwn British schl, annunced in July that it wuld bar its future prime ministers frm bringing smartphnes t schl, and wuld prvide them with Nkia phnes instead.
But plenty f grwnups are als chsing dumb phnes f their wn free will. Jse Brines, wh hsts a cnference fcused n dumb phnes n Reddit, a scial-media site, switched t the Light Phne after grwing alarmed at his rising screen-time recrd. Like many new cmers, he still keeps a smartphne fr situatins such as travelling abrad. Other smartphne addicts are instead chsing t simplify their devices, either by deleting apps r dwnlading nes that cntrl screen time, f which there are a grwing number.
