A series f earthquakes has been happening n Japan's Nt Peninsula since late 2020. This unusual gelgical activity has drawn wrldwide attentin. Unlike cmmn earthquake grups in vlcanic areas, which usually last nly weeks r mnths, the series n the Nt Peninsula has lasted fr years.

It fund that t much fluid pressure (液压) in rck spaces weakens rck structure, and changes in surface weight can cause such pressure changes, s snw prved the mst pssible factr, with the earthquake series' seasnal pattern further supprting a link with weather changes.
This finding has gained sme supprt frm experts. Stephen Mcnutt nted that "water is the main pssible factr," and Rland Bürgmann added that snw and water - caused weight changes have been linked t small earthquake mvements in ther places. Hwever, Bürgmann stressed it is nearly impssible t decide whether envirnmental factrs affect any ne earthquake, and direct cause and effect requires mre test evidence.
Researchers are als still studying hw envirnmental causes f earthquakes culd be related t human - driven climate change. Climate - related changes like melting ice, rising sea level and heavy rain are all pssible factrs t earthquakes.
While climate change will prbably have sme effect n earthquake activity, Bürgmann says "changes in earthquake danger shuld prbably be the least f ur wrries when it cmes t the impact f climate change".
