Suth America’s trpical frests grew well when temperatures skyrcketed 56 millin years ag. This raises an interesting questin: Will the Amazn survive climate change?
Carls Jaramill, a scientist at the Smithsnian trpical Research Institute in Panama, and his team studied pllen and ther plant remains frm three sites in Clmbia and Venezuela. They examined samples (样本) frm a perid knwn as the Palaecene-Ecene Thermal Maximum (PETM), when greenhuse gases caused glbal temperatures t rise by 5℃ in abut 10,000 years.
During the PETM, trpical frests faced average temperatures up t 34℃, cmpared t tday’s 27℃. Surprisingly, the pllen samples shwed an increase in plant species (物种). Each sample frm the PETM cntained an average f 36 species, while lder, cler perids had nly 24 species. Additinally, the rate at which new species frmed was significantly higher in the PETM than befre it.
These findings are surprising because the climate mdels shw that the Amazn will turn int a dry savanna due t climate change. Hwever, Jaramill’s research suggests that the difference may be dwn t rainfall. He fund n evidence (证据) f reduced rainfall during the PETM and discvered pllen frm plants that prefer wet envirnments. In cntrast, tday’s cmbinatin f climate change and defrestatin is expected t dry ut the Amazn.
Jaramill believes that defrestatin plays a majr rle in mdern climate change effects. When frests are cleared, the land becmes dry quickly. “If we didn’t have defrestatin in the trpics, the frests might manage climate change better,” he explains.
Matthew Huber, a researcher frm Purdue University, stresses that Jaramill’s results might nt apply t the entire trpical regin. The samples were taken frm the nrth f Suth America, and areas farther suth, like central Brazil, may experience much htter cnditins. Still, Huber praises Jaramill’s wrk as a significant achievement. “This research gives us a windw int a wrld we’ve never seen befre,” Huber says.
      32. What did the pllen samples frm the PETM shw?
      A. Mre new species had appeared. B. The temperature stayed at 34℃.
      C. All plant species were in danger. D. The envirnment became cler.
      33. What might explain the difference in mdern climate impacts accrding t Jaramill?
      A. High rainfall. B. Rising temperatures.
      C. Defrestatin. D. Unexpected wildfires.
      34. What is Huber’s attitude twards Jaramill’s wrk?
      A. Unclear. B. Psitive. C. Dubtful. D. Negative.
      35. Which is the mst suitable title fr the text?
      A. The deadly Result Defrestatin Will Bring
      B. Lessns Frm the PETM fr Frests Wrldwide
