A new air-pwered rbt can practically walk right ff the 3-D printer. The 3-D printed rbt desn’t have any electrnic parts. All it needs t mve is an air canister (小罐).
Mechanical engineer Yichen Zhai led the wrk. He and his team at the University f Califrnia gave their rbt six legs, like an insect. Each leg can mve up and dwn r side t side. The whle thing is made frm the same type f plastic.
Air frm a canister mves thrugh tiny tubes and chambers (软管和腔室) in the rbt’s bdy t pwer it. As the pressure in each f these chambers changes, it pens and clses different tubes. That mves air int different sets f chambers, and the prcess starts again. Then, the rbt’s legs can mve frward.
The rbt’s design is quite interesting, says Perla Mailin. She wasn’t invlved (参加) in building it, but she des wrk n ther rbts at the University f Oxfrd. “Making a rbt usually invlves designing different parts frm different materials,” she says. “But this ne is a single piece made with just ne material. And because the design desn’t use any electrnics, it wrks well in water. Such a rbt culd wrk in areas where electrnics might fail, such as in mines, underwater, r even in space.”
Hwever, the new rbt isn’t quite ready fr these hard cnditins. The rbt has t mve faster first, says Zhai. Nw, it mves slwly at 4 cm per secnd. That’s a little faster than a snail (蜗牛), but slwer than a turtle (乌龟). Zhai and his team are wrking t make it faster. The team als hpes t add a guiding system r a way fr the rbt t avid bjects in its way. Right nw, it can nly mve frward in a straight line.
Until the rbt gets these imprvements, it wn’t be ding serius wrk. “The rbt is like a ty nw,” Zhai says. And it can be cheaply and easily 3-D printed. “If peple lve it, peple can make it,” he says. “That’s enugh.”
12. What is special abut the rbt invented by Zhai?
A. It is the first 3-D printed rbt.B. It runs n air nt electricity.
C. It mves faster than a turtle.D. It is made f cmmn metal.
13. What des paragraph 3 mainly tell us abut the rbt?
A. Hw it mves.B. Why it is needed.
C. What it lks like.D. Where it can be used.
14. What is Perla Mailin’s attitude tward the rbt?
A. Dubtful.B. Careful.C. Psitive.D. Unclear.
15. What can be learned abut the rbt frm the last tw paragraphs?
A. It will attract many kids.B. It is ready fr serius wrk nw.
C. It culd becme ppular amng peple.D. It will lk like a snail with a guiding system.
