Much has been written abut hw mdern lifestyles mean we are n lnger getting enugh sleep, unlike ur ancestrs living in less technlgically advanced times. Hwever, an analysis f 54 sleep studies has fund that peple in small, nn-industrialized scieties actually get less sleep than thse in mre industrialized regins.
It is ften assumed that the rise f electrnic devices like smartphnes means that peple tday are sleeping less than in the recent past. Many studies that reprt a decrease in sleep in the past few decades are based n asking peple hw lng they sleep, which is an unreliable measure. Research using mre reliable assessment tls, such as physical activity mnitrs, hasn’t fund a decrease ver recent decades. But these studies are dne in industrialized cuntries, leaving pen the questin f whether peple gt mre sleep prir t(在…之前)industrializatin.
The availability f wearable sleep mnitrs has made it easier t study sleep in nn-industrialized scieties. McKinnn and her clleague David Samsn have nw analyzed 54 sleep studies, cmparing sleeping habits in industrialized scieties, including the US, Australia and Sri Lanka, with thse in smaller, nn-industrialized cmmunities, including Indigenus peples in the Amazn, Madagascar and Tanna Island in the Pacific.
The 54 studies invlved direct measurements f sleep in peple aged 18 and ver wh had n serius health cnditins. The pair fund that in nn-industrialized scieties, the average was 6.4 hurs, cmpared with 7.1 hurs in industrial scieties. They als fund that peple in nn-industrialized scieties were asleep fr 74 percent f the time they were in bed, cmpared with 88 percent in industrial scieties, a measure knwn as sleep efficiency.
Samsn wes the higher sleep duratin and efficiency in industrialized scieties t safer and mre secure sleep cnditins. He remarks, “We n lnger need t wrry abut enemies r predatrs at night.” “While these studies invlve nly 866 peple in ttal, the data set is the mst cmprehensive(全面的) yet,” says Samsn.
      28. What is the miscnceptin abut sleep?
      A. Peple with less advanced technlgies sleep less.
      B. Peple in nn-industrialized scieties get less sleep.
      C. The increasing use f phnes impacts sleep psitively.
      D. Mdern lifestyles lead t a decrease in peple’s sleep time.
      29. Hw did McKinnn and Samsn cnduct their research?
      A. By analyzing previus studies n sleep.

      C. By recrding peple’s sleep time directly.
      D. By measuring sleep duratin and efficiency.
      30. What can be learned frm McKinnn and Samn’s analysis?

      B. Sri Lankans sleep 6.4 hurs per day n average.
      C. Amazns enjy safe and secure sleep cnditins.

The glbal shipping industry is alne respnsible fr three percent f the ttal greenhuse gas emissins(排放)humans prduce. If left unaddressed(不处理) , in a few decades, it will cntribute t ver 10 percent f the ttal man- made emissins.
A new study frm MIT researchers reveals a practical slutin t this prblem. The study authrs have develped an emissin-free apprach t prduce hydrgen ( H₂) fuel, which generates nly water when burned, fr cmmercial ships. They als claim they can make hydrgen fuel using easily accessible resurces.
This isn’t the first study prpsing the use f aluminum (a silver-gray metal that sda cans are made frm) fr prducing hydrgen fuel. It’s already well knwn that when aluminum and water react(反应), hydrgen is frmed as ne f the byprducts(副产品). Such chemical reactins, hwever, cme with a srt f a dilemma: It nly wrks when aluminum is used in its pure state. The mment aluminum meets with xygen, such as in air, its surface immediately frms a prtective layer that prevents further reactins.
During their study, the researchers turned recycled sda cans int small aluminum balls. They pretreated(预处理) the aluminum balls with a rare-metal ally(合金)that effectively purifies(净化) aluminum, making it int a pure frm that can react with seawater t generate hydrgen. The salt ins(离子)in the seawater can in turn attract and recver the ally, which can be reused t generate mre hydrgen. The team fund that this reactin successfully prduced hydrgen gas, thugh slwly.
They experimented with different chemicals including the nes that are typically fund in kitchens and realized that adding cffee made a difference. “A lw cncentratin(浓度) f caffeine is enugh t prduce the same amunt f hydrgen in just five minutes, cmpared t tw hurs withut it,” the study authrs nte. “The next part is t figure ut hw t use this fr trucks, trains, and maybe airplanes,” Aly Kmbargi, lead study authr, said.
      32. Hw can the MIT researchers cntribute t the shipping industry?
      A. By prviding a clean energy surce. B. By develping new fuel strage methds.
      C. By imprving fuel efficiency in existing ships. D. By planning mre cnvenient shipping rutes
      33. What is the challenge when making hydrgen frm aluminum?
      A. Hydrgen is t expensive t make.B. The chemical reactin happens t slw.
      C. Aluminum easily reacts with xygen.D. The metal surface prevents further reactins.
      34. What can be inferred abut the MIT researchers’ hydrgen generatin prcess?
      A. It requires large quantities f ally.
      B. It prduces significant waste chemicals.
      C. It creates hydrgen in a sustainable(可持续的) cycle.
      D. It generates hydrgen with lw purity.
      35. What can be the best title fr the text?
      A. Hydrgen Fuel: A Game Changer f Transprtatin
      B. Cans+ Seawater+ Cffee: A Greener Shipping Future
      C. Cffee: The Secret Substance fr Clean Shipping Fuel
      D. Aluminum: A Pineering Material fr Hydrgen Prduce
