I’ve always battled with phne use. I hate hw much my sense f being alive in the wrld is affected by my screen time. S, a few years ag, I decided t d a sketch (速写) every day.
I had always wanted t draw, but I was awkward abut starting ut. Then I bught sme ntebks: a small ne fr my jacket pcket, and larger nes fr my bedside and fr the kitchen table. After realizing that n ne wuld ever ntice my drawings, I decided I didn’t need t care abut what anyne thught.
One day I grabbed ne f the ntebks and a pencil and went ut in the wild. I spent 10 minutes hastily drawing sme cws and wild hrses. Standing n the grassland, pencil in hand, I felt I was like a stupid, but I had started. It was a happy mment.
I had never drawn a hrse befre but, t my excitement, ne quick, simple sketch seemed nt bad fr a beginner. Next, I drew ur cat snzing, and then ur dg. Beside each sketch, I wrte the date and little ntes. Having the pencils and sketchbks within easy reach meant these small mments built up. Within weeks, what might therwise have been buried (隐藏) in phts n my mbile phne became a heartfelt reflectin f my life unflding n pages.
Mst f my sketches aren’t great, but the quickest nes smetimes have nice results. The reasn is that drawing at speed takes away my self-dubt. One unexpected benefit f ding a sketch a day is that I spend less time dmscrlling n my phne. Like mst wmen, I am anxius abut the state f the wrld, but drawing slws things dwn, making me pay attentin t the mment. I lse myself in the act f drawing, and I’m using my hands, which is relaxing in itself. Drawing als makes me happier and mre patient. Art is knwn fr being emtinally uplifting and life-changing, and I’ve definitely felt the benefits.
      24. Why was the authr unwilling t start drawing?
      A. She culdn’t cntrl her screen time. B. She had n idea what t sketch.
      C. She cared t much abut thers’ pinins. D. She shwed little interest in drawing.
      25. What des the underlined wrd “hastily” in paragraph 3 prbably mean?
      A. Carefully. B. Wrriedly. C. Skilfully. D. Hurriedly.
      26. What can we infer frm the authr’s sketches?
      A. They serve as a recrd f daily life.
      B. They create mving mments with ease.
      C. They are f high quality fr a fresh hand.
      D. They are saved in phne pht cllectins.
      27. Hw has drawing changed the authr?
      A. It familiarizes her with mre peple. B. It stps her using the phne.
      C. It makes her settle dwn. D. It gets her mre prfessinal recgnitin.
      【答案】24. C 25. D 26. A 27. C

It is a cntradictin. Urbanizatin (城市化) is ne f the main causes f the destructin f bidiversity, and yet, cities tday becme a new hme fr wild species whse natural habitats have been destryed.
Cities are grwing steadily at the cst f natural areas, frests and farmland. Sil and water pllutin and the destructin f natural habitats are all factrs that influence, r even destry, ecsystems and the species they prtect. Yet nature des nt always give in. The reduced presence f pesticides(杀虫剂), the absence f hunting, the diversity f habitats, and the availability f water and fd favr the establishment f animals and plants in search f new spaces.
But nly species with the genetic nature t adapt have a chance. Crepis sancta, a plant that grws in Mediterranean cities, has made majr effrts t adapt t a freign envirnment. In a few generatins, this plant has started t reprduce differently. It nw makes heavy seeds first, and these seeds can grw n cncrete(混凝土). In the animal wrld, the mst watchful cal tits are the nes that settle in cities. These birds lay their eggs earlier, have smaller chicks and sing luder t be heard abve the nise.
Fr urban bidiversity t develp, urban planning must change. Eclgists see tw mdels: land sparing and land sharing. The first methd invlves making a firm line. This line keeps crwded living areas and large natural spaces separate. Land sharing, n the ther hand, invlves nature within the urban envirnment by intrducing a successin f grassy passages, small gardens and neighbrhd green spaces. “But in reality, it all depends n urban pressure, ” said Kevin Gastn, a researcher at the University f Exeter. “Where demand is high, the city must be crwded and have a barrier(分界线) separating it frm nature. Where there is less pressure, sharing can be mre favrable.”
Urban bidiversity prvides significant services t city residents, reducing the urban heat island effect and imprving well-being. Hwever, it still has many unanswered questins abut the ability f species t adapt; it shuld nt vershadw a majr challenge f prtecting the bidiversity f natural envirnments.
      28. What can we knw abut cities and bidiversity?
      A. Urbanizatin shuld give way t bidiversity.
      B. Bidiversity is declining faster in urban areas.
      C. Urban cmmunities help imprve wild species’ natural habitats.
      D. Cities have bth destructive and prtective effects n bidiversity.
      29. What d the examples f Crepis sancta and cal tits stress?
      A. The impact f climate change n wildlife. B. The living habits f city species.
      C. The cmpetitin between species in cities. D. The evlutinary adaptatin t urban life.
      30. What d Kevin Gastn’ wrds imply?
      A. Urban planning mdels shuld depend n urban pressure.
B Urban bidiversity causes incnvenience t peple’s lives.
      C. A barrier is essential t prtecting urban bidiversity.
      D. Land sparing is mre effective than land sharing.
      31. What can be the best title fr the text?
      A. Cities Taking up Habitats f Wildlife B. City Expansin Benefiting Wild Species
      C. Wildlife Bming in the Cncrete Jungle D. Bidiversity Increasing in Natural Habitats
      【答案】28. D 29. D 30. A 31. C
      D
Pmel(a kind f fruit) has a thick peel that is typically thrwn away, cntributing t significant fd waste. In a recent study, researchers at the University f Illinis lked int methds t repurpse it t develp a device capable f pwering small electrnic prducts.
The pmel peel has a thin uter layer and a thick, sft inner layer. “Sme peple have used pmel peels t extract mixtures fr essential ils,” the researchers said, “but we wanted t take advantage f the structure f the peel s as t upcycle it int higher-value prducts.” They cut it int smaller pieces and freeze-dried it t maintain its unique three-dimensinal prus (多孔的) architecture. By examining its chemical cmpsitin and mechanical prperties, the research team engineered a device that transfrms mechanical energy int electricity.
The device is cntact electrified, which may sund cmplex, but is actually simple. When we tuch a sweater, especially in the winter, smetimes we feel a shck. The basic mechanism is cntact electrificatin, r rubbing-electrificatin (摩擦起电). When tw materials are rubbed against each ther, electricity can frm due t the transfer f charges between them.
The researchers used the pmel peel and a plastic film as tw rubbing-electric layers that are brught int cntact when external frce is present. They attached an electrde t each f these layers t judge hw well the resulting device culd turn external mechanical energy int electricity. By simply tapping the pmel-peel-based rubbing-electric device with a finger, they culd light up abut 20 LEDs. They als shwed that a sprts watch can be pwered nly by these mechanical frces, withut the need f external electricity.
This wrk has strng ptential t transfrm therwise wasted energy int useful electricity; it culd cntribute significantly t lng-term sustainability. Yi-Cheng Wang, a prfessr f Cllege f Illinis, said, “We als fund that, thanks t the pmel peel’s naturally prus structure, rubbing-electric devices based n it can be highly sensitive t frce and frce frequency. Therefre, we gt the idea f develping sensing devices that can be attached t the human bdy fr bimechanical mnitring.”
      32. What made the researchers develp the rubbing-electric device?
      A. The gal t prduce mre ils. B. The desire t cut dwn fd waste.
      C. The need t test a freeze-drying technlgy. D. The lack f effective pwer-generating tls.
      33. What des paragraph 3 fcus n abut the device?
      A. Its develping prcess. B. Its functinal advantages.
      C. Its wrking principle. D. Its experimenting cnditins.
      34. Why are LEDs and the sprts watch mentined in paragraph 4?
      A. T prve the device’s effectiveness. B. T stress their energy efficiency.
      C. T shw the device’s user-friendliness. D. T measure their electricity cnsumptin.
      35. What can we knw frm Prfessr Wang’s wrds?
      A. The devices need further tests. B. The devices inspired wider applicatins.
      C. Pmel peel may fail t respnd t frce. D. Making sensing devices is their riginal gal.
      【答案】32. B 33. C 34. A 35. B
