Leaving ur hstel in the centre f Phnm Penh, we climb inside ur small Tuk Tuk cabin attached t the back f Kivi's mtrbike; a bttle f water in ne hand and a sunflwer mask in the ther we set ff n ur 45 - minute cmmute. It is a familiar start t the day as we meet tw ther vlunteers. We are setting ut t wrk in an rphanage just utside Cambdia's capital city.
The mrning hur in Phnm Penh is crwded and chatic. Kivi directs ur path between the trucks, 4×4 Lexus' and cuntless mtrbikes, which ften carry entire families. We reach the dusty highway, a mixture f substandard early in place t prtect ur ears and lungs. A maze f cncrete buildings and huts exist alng the side f the rad amng a sea f rubbish. The residents ften smile and wave as we pass by.
We turn nt a farm track. The last part f ur jurney is a rller caster, jumping ut f pthles (路面洼) and turning t avid falling f the sinking rad. We pass huts n stilts (木桩), skinny cws and farm yards where children jump and scream upn seeing us. The stream alng the side f the rad is almst bne dry and plants are rarely seen acrss the fields.
Finally we arrive at ur destinatin: the asis (令人快慰的地方) is Samng Farm. By the gates, a grup f 10 - year - ld children cmpete in the area f marbles. We're greeted by the shuts f "Cha, cha (shrt fr 'teacher')!" frm several ther kids gathering rund. As we climb ut f ur vehicle, the sun is already ht and the asis is dry as the fields surrunding it. In such cnditins yu wuld imagine life t be hard, but yu wuldn't knw it t see the warm smiles and hear the laughter f the residents at Samng Orphanage.
Cmpared t children in the Western wrld, they have little and yet they give s much in genersity f spirit and enthusiasm fr every day. Despite the jurney, it is s gd t arrive and wrk in the mrning.

If yu ever wndered what yur child's drawings might reveal (揭示), keep n reading.
Imagine hw yu wuld feel when lking at Earth frm uter space. That feeling f awe (敬畏) is what we call the Overview Effect, a feeling mst astrnauts reprt when they return t Earth, described as a transfrmative experience (颠覆性体验) that changes their view f ur planet and humanity—an experience that builds a sense f unity, intercnnectedness, and respnsibility fr Earth's well - being. Recently, 40,000 children experienced a virtual reality (VR) space jurney, becming a unique grup t have a chance t underg this awesme feeling withut leaving Earth.
T find ut whether they had experienced the Overview Effect, we asked 100 children frm this special grup t draw self - images befre and after the VR jurney. In previus studies n adults, we fund that after viewing a vide t bring abut the Overview Effect, participants tended t draw a smaller self. Apparently, ging thrugh the
experience f awe and wnder makes ne feel smaller, with a smaller drawing as the result. Hwever, when we applied this methd t children, we encuntered unexpected results. The size f their drawings remained unchanged after the VR experience. This discrepancy led us t questin: Were drawings by children simply nt a gd way t measure the Overview Effect? Did what wrked fr adults simply nt wrk fr children?
Upn clser analysis, we discvered that the key t measuring transfrmative experiences in children lies nt in the size f their drawings but in the richness f their cntent. Befre the VR jurney, the children’s drawings were simple, ften shwing familiar elements frm their daily lives. After the jurney, their drawings far mre insightful, filled with vivid descriptins indicative f what they had learned during the VR jurney—fr example, the Earth’s eclgy. This discvery gave us a new way t understand children’s respnses t transfrmative experiences.
I’m nt prpsing that we replace tests in schls with children’s drawings. But when it cmes t transfrmative experiences, I’d recmmend paying mre attentin t what children actually draw.
28. Hw can we describe the Overview Effect?
A. It expresses man’s view f Earth and humanity.
B. It shifts peple’s insights f the wrld.
C. It brings abut awesme feelings f the uter space.
D. It is a transfrmative experience unique t astrnauts.
29. What des the underlined wrd “discrepancy” mean in paragraph 3?
A. Prblem.B. Prgress.C. Dubt.D. Difference.
30. Hw did the children’s drawings change after the VR jurney?
A. The self - image became larger.B. They described mre details.
C. There were mre familiar elements.D. They expressed richer emtins.
31. What is the authr’s purpse in writing the text?
A. T suggest drawing as a way f measuring children’s learning.
B. T cmpare adults’ and children’s Overview Effect.
C. T analyse the rle f VR technlgy in child educatin.
D. T describe the psychlgical experience f space travels.

Ariel Prcaccia has thught a lt abut hw t cut a cake ver the last 15 years. As the father f three children, he knws hw hard it is t divide a birthday cake t everyne’s satisfactin. But it’s als because Prcaccia’s wrk fcuses n explring the mathematical rules fr dividing stuff up fairly. One way t d that is t think abstractly abut dessert.
Fr decades, researchers have been asking the seemingly simple questin f hw t cut a cake fairly. The answer reaches far beynd birthday parties. A mathematical prblem at its heart, cake cutting cnnects strict reasning t real - wrld issues f fairness, and s attracts nt nly mathematicians, but als scial scientists, ecnmists and mre. “It’s a very elegant mdel in which yu can distill (提炼) what fairness really is, and reasn abut it,” Prcaccia says.
The simplest apprach is called the “divider - chser” methd, where ne persn cuts the cake int tw equal pieces in his view, and the ther persn picks first. Each receives a piece that they feel is as valuable as the ther’s. But when persnal preferences are taken int accunt, even the easiest rule becmes cmplicated. Suppse Alice and Bb are t divide a cake, and Alice knws Bb prefers chclate, she may knwingly divide the cake unequally s the smaller piece cntains mre chclate. Then Bb will chse accrding t his preference, and Alice will get the larger piece. Bth f them are satisfied with what they get, but the meaning f fairness changes in this situatin.
The cake is a symbl fr any divisible gd. When cake - cutting principles are emplyed t settling disagreements, they are ptentially helping the wrld find slutins. Prcaccia has used fair divisin algrithms (算法) t mdel fd distributin. Scial scientist Haris Aziz is explring situatins ranging frm hw t divide up daily tasks t hw t best schedule dctrs’ shifts in hspitals.
Even after decades f research, cake cutting isn't like a simple jigsaw puzzle (拼图) with a well - defined slutin. Instead, ver time, it has develped int a kind f mathematical sandbx, a cnstructive playgrund that brings tgether abstract prfs and easy applicatins. The mre researchers explre it, the mre there is t explre.
32. Why d varius experts study cake cutting?
A. It simplifies party planning tasks.B. It reveals the nature f equality.
C. It slves specific dessert disputes.D. It ffers fixed mathematical answers.
33. What can we learn abut fairness frm the example given in paragraph 3?
A. Its standard is stable.B. It prevents unequal divisin.
C. Its cncept is cmplex.D. It cntrls persnal preferences.
34. What can we infer frm the last paragraph abut the research?
A. It will sn find a perfect and final slutin like a jigsaw puzzle.
B. It has n value because it can't give a definite answer t the prblem.
C. The mre researchers study it, the mre new prblems they find.
D. The research will be a sandbx withut any practical value.
35. What is the best title fr the text?
A. Cake - cutting: A Simple Game with Cmplex Math Rules
B. Fair Divisin: The Only Slutin t All Scial Disagreements
C. Frm Cake - cutting t Real Life: The Math f Fairness
D. Ariel Prcaccia: A Mathematician Wh Studies Cake - cutting

In tday's hyper - cnnected wrld, mst f us are flded by an cean f messages and scial media feeds, frm the mment we wake up t the instant we clse ur eyes. It's nt just a matter f cnvenience r nvelty anymre—fixatin n screens has becme ur habit, a necessity, and even an addictin. 36 Cnstant engagement nt nly cnsumes ur time, but als steal us smething far mre imprtant: peace f mind.
Silence is as critical t mental health as vitamins are t physical well - being. Peple are particular abut what fds they put in their bdies: whether rganic, vegetarian, r fat - free. 37 The mental junk we absrb daily can be definitely harmful than the ccasinal cheeseburger r dnut. The never - ending fld f sensry input taxes the brain's limited attentin resurces, leaving little rm fr deep thinking, reflecting, r creativity.
38 It helps the brain relax, srt thrugh what it has taken in, and regain lst mental energy. As American artist Lenard Kren suggests in his bk Wabi - Sabi, silence can be "an emptiness full f pssibilities", a space where creativity and clarity emerge.
Adding mments f quiet t yur daily rutine desn't require dramatic changes. 39 Better yet, research shws that brief expsure t nature, like a walk in the wds, lwers stress levels, reduces bld pressure, and sharpens fcus. These benefits ccur because green spaces and natural sundscapes prvide a much - needed break frm tday's busy, stressful wrld.
Digital life crwds ut silence, making simply sitting in silence almst unthinkable—yet the very mments f stillness are what ur minds really need. They let us listen t ur thughts, reflect n ur experiences, and cnnect with urselves in a way that is impssible in the nise f mdern life. 40
A. But rarely d we ask urselves: at what cst?
B. S, shuldn't we make laws requiring quiet time every day?
C. It can be as simple as pausing 30 secnds t watch cluds.
D. Next time yu reach fr yur phne, resist the urge and sit in silence.
E. We check ur phne 58 times a day, 30% ccurring during wrk hurs.
F. But they aren't as picky abut what they are expsed t thrugh the senses.
G. Just as ur bdies need nutritin, ur minds require silence t functin well.
