A staff member said, “He gt here tw weeks ag and we’ve heard nthing. His time is up tmrrw.” I turned t the man in hrrr. “Yu mean yu’re ging t kill him?”
“Ma’am,” he said gently. “We dn’t have rm fr every unclaimed (无人领取的) dg.”
The pinter’s calm brwn eyes awaited my decisin. “I’ll take him,” I said.
Glancing at the dg, Dad wrinkled (使起皱纹) his face and turned back twards the huse. Then suddenly, the pinter pulled free frm my grasp. He sat dwn in frnt f Dad. Dad’s anger melted, and sn he was hugging the animal.
It was the beginning f a warm friendship. Dad named the pinter Cheyenne. Tgether they spent lng hurs walking dwn dusty lanes and relaxing n the banks f streams.
Dad’s bitterness disappeared gradually, and he and Cheyenne went n t make many friends. Then, late ne night tw years later, I felt Cheyenne’s cld nse searching thrugh my bed cvers. He had never cme int ur bedrm befre at night. I ran int my father’s rm and fund that he had passed away.

It culd happen just abut any time yu step ut in public. Yu get nt an almst-empty bus, but the next passenger in decides t ignre dzens f empty seats t sit right next t yu. Peple living in densely (密集地) ppulated cities like Mumbai, Beijing, r Mexic City tend t require less persnal space than peple living in sparsely (稀少地) ppulated places within the cuntry. In America, New Yrkers ften have smaller requirements than residents f western states, like Mntana, Shenandah and Wyming. Because everyne has different standards, bdy mvement that is plite in ne place can be understd as ppsite in anther, especially in Britain.
As the British etiquette website Debrett puts it, as a British persn, smebdy standing t clse may make yu “fcus less n what smebdy is saying than n hw clse they are t yu”. Simple acts like putting an arm arund smene yu dn’t knw may seem friendly in China, but they can make us very uncmfrtable. Peple frm many Eurpean cuntries such as France and Spain kiss each ther n the cheek when they meet, yet t British persn, this seems t friendly and “tuch-freely”. B. British peple usually kiss strangers n the cheek t greet them.
C. British peple are helpful thugh they may nt appear t be.
D. British peple are delighted t shw affectin in public.

Hneybees can’t swim, and when their wings are wet, they can’t fly, either. But Chris Rh and ther researchers at the Califrnia Institute f Technlgy fund that when bees drp bdies int water, they can use their wings t prduce little waves and slide tward land—like surfers (冲浪者) wh create and then ride their wn waves.
As with many scientific advances—Isaac Newtn’s apple r Benjamin Franklin’s lightning blt—Dr. Rh’s experiment began with a walk. Passing Caltech’s Millikan Pnd in 2016, he bserved a bee n the water’s surface prducing waves. He wndered hw an insect knwn fr flight culd push itself thrugh water.
Dr. Rh and his c-wrker, Mrteza Gharib, used butterfly nets t cllect lcal Pasadena hneybees and bserved their surf-like mvements. The researchers used a wire t limit each bee’s bdily mvement, allwing clse examinatin f their wings. They fund that the bee bends its wings at a 30-degree angle, pulling up water and prducing a frward frce. Bees get caught n the surface because water is rughly three times heavier than air. But that weight helps t push the bee frward when its wings mve quickly up and dwn. It’s a tugh exercise fr the bees, which the researchers guess culd handle abut 10 minutes f the activity.
The researchers said the surf-like mvement hasn’t been recrded in ther insects and mst semiaquatic (半水生的) insects use their legs fr prpulsin, which is knwn as water-walking. It may have evlved (进化) in bees, they predicted.
Dr. Rh and Dr. Gharib have imagined many practical applicatins fr bees’ surfing. One plan is t use their bservatins t design rbts able t travel acrss sky and sea. “This culd be useful fr search and rescues, r fr getting samples f the surface f the cean, if yu can’t send a bat r helicpter,” Dr. Gharib said.
32. What des the authr intend t shw by mentining Newtn and Franklin?

B. Rh’s chance discvery abut bees.
C. Their utstanding talent fr science.
D. Their similar achievements in discvery.
33.What helps bees mve frward n water?
A. The push frm the water. B. A special swimming skill.
C. Their strng and dry wings.D. The supprt frm the air.
34.Why are pssible new rbts mentined at the end f the passage?
A. T draw mre attentin t the research.B. T prve rbts are better than bats.
C. T criticize current rescue methds.D. T shw the study’s practical value.
35.What des the text mainly tell us ?
A. The prblems f wet wings fr insects.
B. Insects can use wave pwer t escape.
