Bennett was brn with a disability that led t the amputatin (截肢) f his ft when he was a baby, but the 55-year-ld never let it hld back the pursuit (追求) f his passin: surfing. He has traveled the wrld surfing, making it t sme f the mst famus big wave surfing spts in places like Indnesia, Hawaii, Australia, and Prtugal. “The cean is my happy place,” said Bennett. “When I’m riding a wave, nthing else matters, nthing else is there — it is just me and that wave and feeling that glide and that ride.”
He grew up a “water baby” and since his father was a big swimmer, the prgressin t surfing came naturally, despite his missing ft. Fr his whle adult life, Bennett has been at the crest (巅峰) f the wave f para-surfing, which has gne thrugh a huge transfrmatin.
The turning pint came in 2015 when the Internatinal Surfing Assciatin (ISA) hsted the first Para Surfing Wrld Champinship — bringing tgether surfers frm all the natins. Since then, the sprt has explded in ppularity with para-surfing, with its cmmunity becming the fastest-grwing part f the surfing wrld. Team England para-surfing team is nw ranked seventh in the wrld, led by Bennett’s instructin and inspiratin.
He explained that within the para-surfing cmmunity there are peple with all kinds f disabilities. “I cached smene with brain diseases. I have gt sme blind guys that I cach, bviusly sme amputees,” he said. “If smebdy has gt a disability and they want t get in the cean and catch waves, I can make it happen. I dn’t believe in barriers. Geda Qawla, wh is 75, is having truble remembering wrds frm his native Ongta language. He’s ne f nly five peple wh can still speak it. As he gets lder, he finds it harder t think f the names f things like trees and birds. “I can feel it leaving me. The thers try t help me remember but they are the same, they are als frgetting and there’s n ne left t teach us,” he said. Geda was afraid that as the remaining speakers age and pass away, the language may disappear with them.
This is just ne example f a bigger prblem happening all ver the wrld. Languages are disappearing fast with ne dying every tw weeks. If things dn’t change, by the end f this century, half f the 7,000 languages we have nw might be gne. The nes in the mst danger are thse that aren’t written dwn and thse spken by very few peple.
The main reasns fr this are technlgy and the way the wrld is becming mre cnnected. Peple wh speak smaller languages are being pushed t stp using them and start speaking bigger languages. Mre peple mving t new places als cntributes t this, as they leave their native languages behind and learn new nes.
Hwever, sme languages that were almst gne have been saved. This happened thrugh lng-term effrts t bring them back t life. These effrts included teaching them in schls, using them in the media (媒体), and even putting them n rad signs. But fr mst languages, like Ongta, there isn’t enugh mney r supprt t d this.
At Arba Minch University, sme researchers are trying t save the Ongta language by making a dictinary. Sme yung Ongta peple wh have had an educatin als want t keep their language alive.
