I recently realized that my kids are mst excited by televisin, r any screen. I’ve tried ther chices: cake, the z and parties. Nw I’m making a dcumentary (纪录片) film abut children and their lack f cnnectin t nature.
When I take my children utside, I see them change. At first they lk at me as if t say: “What are we ding? The cartns are n!” Thirty secnds later, their eyes mve away frm the 30cm zne that screens ccupy.

When I started t find what wuld happen if my kids went utside mre, I realized that the things children lve are cnstantly marketed. Marketing seems like the best way t get kids t lve nature. I’ve discvered a surprising truth and called myself marketing directr fr nature.
I have made an app that re-cnnects peple t nature. I have been sneaking arund Lndn replacing signs with advertisements fr the great utdrs. But I’ve cme t wnder then whether I shuld be selling nature. A shrt nap (小睡) during the day seems t increase the verall amunt f sleep a yung child gets, rather than being a serius threat t night-time sleep.
Babies and yung children typically nap during the day, a habit that has been linked t the develpment f early memries. This trend usually stps between the ages f abut 3 and 5, but the timing varies, leaving many parents unsure as t whether their child shuld nap r nt.
In France, children start a frm f preschl at 3 years ld, which presents a dilemma (窘境) f whether staff shuld let them nap. “Sme parents and teachers are cncerned that napping during the day might disturb night-time sleep r reduce valuable learning time,” says Stéphanie Mazza at the University f Lyn in France.
T see if naps meaningfully disturb night-time sleep, Mazza and her clleagues gave wrist-wrn sleep trackers t 85 children aged 2 t 5 frm six French preschls and measured their sleep ver an average f 7. 8 days.
This data, cmbined with sleep diaries filled in by parents, shwed that an increase in nap time f 1 hur was linked t getting 13. 6 minutes less sleep at night, n average, and pushed back the time at which the child gt t sleep at night by 6. 4 minutes. On days when children napped, their verall sleep time acrss the day increased by 45 minutes.
“Naps resulted in a significant increase in ttal daily sleep time, bringing children clser t the recmmended internatinal sleep duratin fr a 24-hur perid,” says Mazza. The Wrld Health Organizatin recmmends that children f this age shuld sleep fr 10 t 13 hurs per day.
“Parents shuldn’t wrry if their child still needs a nap befre the age f 6,” says Mazza. “Rather than viewing naps as disturbing, they shuld be recgnized as a valuable surce f rest, especially when children are expsed t exciting envirnments.”
