The Oxfrd English Dictinary (OED) is the mst trusted dictinary f the English language, but its creatin was a great task that tk ver 70 years.
In 1857, a Lndn language sciety decided that existing English dictinaries were nt enugh and suggested a cmpletely new ne. The prject relied n vlunteers t read English literature and cllect example sentences fr wrds n small pieces f paper. Hwever, prgress was very slw fr the first tw decades. In 1879, Oxfrd University Press agreed t publish the dictinary and James Murray was appinted editr. He restarted the vlunteer prgram and built a small irn shed (棚), called the “Scriptrium”, in his garden t wrk n the prject. He even paid his children t srt the millins f small pieces. At first, Murray thught the wrk wuld take 10 years. But after five years, the first sectin was published, cvering nly the wrds frm “A” t “Ant” — it was clear that the dictinary wuld be much larger than anyne had imagined.
T speed up the wrk, three ther editrs were appinted t wrk with Murray. Each editr and their team wrked n different sectins f the alphabet. After decades f effrt, the final vlume (卷) was published in 1928. Sadly, Murray himself did nt live t see the prject cmpleted. The final dictinary filled 10 vlumes with ver 250,000 wrds.
The English language never stps changing, s the OED is never finished. Sn after the first editin was cmpleted, editrs began wrking n a supplement (增补). In the 1980s, the dictinary entered the digital age. The entire text was typed int cmputers, leading t a 20-vlume secnd editin in 1989. This was fllwed by a CD-ROM versin (版本) and, in the year 2000, the OED Online was invented.
Tday, the OED Online is updated every three mnths with new wrds and revised nes. What started as a great idea in the 19th century cntinues t grw, remaining the tp recrd f the English language and its nging develpment.

D yu remember the last time yu tk a language curse? When yu finished the curse, yur language abilities were different frm yur classmates’.
These differences exist in every field. But in my field, the psychlgy (心理学) f secnd-language learning, ne questin remains unclear: why is it easier fr sme peple t learn a new language than fr thers? Recently, I was excited t learn that scientist Xiaqian Chai and her team at McGill University have been studying this questin. A. T share a persnal dubt.B. T challenge the reader.
C. T summarize a study.D. T intrduce the tpic.
13. Hw did Xiaqian Chai and her team perfrm their study?
A. By teaching students different memry skills.
B. By asking participants abut their learning habits.
C. By scanning brains and cllecting speech samples.
D. By cmparing curse grades frm different schls.
14. What predicted language skill imprvement in the study?
A. The participants’ age and backgrund.B. The intelligence level f the participants.
C. The amunt f time spent in the classrm.D. The cnnectins’ strength f the brain parts.
15. What is the last paragraph mainly abut?
A The applicatin f the study.B. The ways f English learning.
C. The imprtance f glbalizatin.D. The number f middle schlers.
