Her nearest challenger, Eugeni Rselló Slé, had t be rescued fur miles frm the finish line. The eventual winner f the men’s race, Ein Keith, was abut 50 miles behind Paris when she crssed the finish line.
Why wuld anyne subject themselves t this hard situatin? A quarter f a century ag, the behaviral ecnmist Gerge Lewenstein addressed this questin. He suggested fur mtives: self-signaling, gal cmpletin, mastery and meaning. Hwever, as far as I am cncerned, these drives are nt unique t ultramarathners like Jasmin Paris. Wh amng us des nt value the satisfactin f achieving a gal, r finding urselves the equal f a testing challenge?

Fr decades mercury (汞) has been settling int lakes and ceans, where it turns int methylmercury — a pisnus substance that sticks t fish and everything that eats them, humans included. Methylmercury pisning, which can damage the nervus system, “always seemed like such a difficult thing t deal with,” says Kate Tepper, a pstdctral researcher at Australia’s Macquarie University.
T try t slve this prblem, Tepper and her clleagues genetically engineered zebra fish and fruit flies s that the rganisms can change methylmercury int the less harmful elemental mercury, which leaves the bdy as a gas.
The researchers injected zebra fish and fruit fly embrys (胚胎) with Escherichia cli (大肠杆菌) genes that prduce a cnversin enzyme (转化酶). As the scientists reprt in Nature Cmmunicatins, the mdified zebra fish cntained 64 percent less mercury than unmdified nes, and the fruit flies had 83 percent less. Tepper says that the small, mercury-resistant fish culd serve as a self-purifying fundatin fr the fd chain, prtecting larger fish, birds and humans that eat them. Mdified insects, meanwhile, culd remve mercury frm the envirnment by eating waste.
Rbert Masn, a marine scientist at the University f Cnnecticut, says mdified animals might reduce methylmercury buildup lcally. Hwever, he sees a limitatin: even fr small-scale cleanups, elemental mercury can change back int methylmercury nce it is released int the atmsphere.
Tepper thinks the mdified zebra fish wuld ideally be intrduced at highly plluted sites. First, thugh, the researchers need t make sure the mdified fish are safe. Tepper prpses eventual field trials in small lakes s that scientists can test fr unintended eclgical effects in a cntrlled setting.
Such trials are years away. Hwever, Tepper believes smeday, we culd use similar methds t clean up ther pllutants, like micrplastics and chemicals.” This shws we can use animals t clean up pllutin,” she says. “Ptentially we culd use this fr a lt f pllutants.”
8. What des the authr intend t shw thrugh paragraph 1?
A. The wrldwide mercury pllutin prblem.
B. The difficulty in detecting mercury in water.
C. The mtivatin behind dealing with mercury pllutin.
D. The imprtant discvery f methylmercury pisning.
9. What can we learn abut the genetically mdified zebra fish?
A. They can reduce mercury in the fd chain.
B. They can prduce mre cnversin enzymes.
C. They are mre useful than mdified fruit flies.
D. They are mre attractive t animals that eat them.
10. What des Rbert Masn say abut the genetically mdified animals?
A. They might bring abut mre harm than gd.
B. They might nt d much t cut mercury pllutin.
C. They are mre cst-effective than existing methds.
D. They shuld be put t gd use immediately.
11. Hw des Tepper feel abut their new way t remve mercury in water?
A. Negative.B. Wrried.
C. Cnfused.D. Optimistic.
