self-cntrl and respect. These cntests ften tk place in temples and served t prmte mral values and scial
      rder.
Althugh ancient sprts varied widely in frm and intent, they universally highlighted the value f skill.

Architect Liu Jiakun was awarded the 2025 Pritzker Architecture Prize n Tuesday, making him the secnd
winner frm China t earn the highest hnr in the field f architecture after Wang Shu in 2012.
Living in Chengdu, the capital f suthwestern China’s Sichuan prvince, Liu’s career spans fur decades and
ver 30 prjects. He established Jiakun architects in 1999 and is devted t creating an expansive cllectin f
wrks ranging frm small, beautiful museums and mnuments and vast cmmercial buildings t master plans fr
cities. “The purpse f architecture is t create a beautiful, just and dignified living envirnment. Peple’s real lives,
happiness and dignity are what we strive fr,” says Liu.
The prize’s jury statement says that “intertwining (交织) seemingly ppsing things such as idealism versus
everyday existence, histry versus mdernity, and cllectivism versus individuality, Liu ffers affirming
architecture that celebrates the lives f rdinary citizens”.
Wang, the 2012 Pritzker recipient, tells China Daily that Liu’s winning is encuraging: “His wrks are very
lcal, yet mdern, directly addressing the challenges facing the transfrmatin f cntemprary Chinese cities.”
Wang says bth he and Liu pursue cntemprary architecture rted in traditin. Many architects arund the wrld
attempt t d the same, yet their style has never becme mainstream. “I believe Liu’s winning hlds great
significance and will resnate with thse architects,” he adds.
Liu’s fcus n rdinary peple is reflected in his largest prject West Village, a five-stry urban cmplex
cmpleted in 2015 in Chengdu. The cmplex includes a ftball field, paths fr cyclists and pedestrians, and a
market. The blck has becme a ppular public space and a destinatin fr the city’s residents t spend leisure time.
Hearing the news that Liu wn the Pritzker Prize, many netizens wh have visited the West Village and the
museums he designed expressed that his architecture reflects a precius sense f relaxatin, much like the vibrant
city f Chengdu itself, which is knwn fr its giant pandas, htpt and leisurely pace.
      4. What d we knw abut Liu Jiakun?
      A. He is the first Chinese winner f the Pritzker Prize.
      B. His career spans 40 years with ver 30 prjects.
      C. He funded Jiakun architects in 2012 in Chengdu.
      D. His wrks nly include museums and mnuments.
      5. What is a feature f Liu Jiakun’s architectural wrks?
      A. Pursuit f traditin-based mdernity.
      B. Cncentratin n utline.
      第 5页/共 13页
      C Integratin with surrundings.
      D. Cmbinatin with freign styles.
      6. The example f West Village is used t illustrate that ________.
      A. Liu Jiakun pays attentin t the needs f rdinary peple
      B. Liu Jiakun’s prjects are all large-scale urban cmplexes
      C. public spaces in Chengdu are nt ppular amng residents
      D. ftball fields are unnecessary in urban cmplex design
      7. Which f the fllwing wrds can best describe Liu Jiakun?
      A. Energetic and ptimistic.
      B. Outging and respnsible.
      C. Curageus and generus.
      D. Cmmitted and creative.
      C
One f my bad habits is saying “busy” when peple ask me hw I’m ding. Smetimes it’s because I actually
am busy, but ther times it’s because that’s what I think I’m suppsed t say. That’s what imprtant peple say.
That’s what peple wh get prmted say. But wrking lng hurs desn’t drive better results. Never taking a
vacatin wn’t lead t a prmtin. S why are we s prud t talk abut hw busy we are all the time?
In 2016, researchers frm Clumbia, Harvard, and Gergetwn cnducted a study t figure it ut. They fund
busy peple are perceived t be f high status, and interestingly, these status attributins are heavily influenced by
ur wn beliefs abut scial mbility. In ther wrds, the mre we believe that ne has the pprtunity fr success
based n hard wrk, the mre we tend t think that peple wh skip leisure and wrk all the time are f higher
      standing.
That’s why we feel like we have t appear busy, and there’s a real perceptin that if smene is knee-deep in
meetings, emails, and stress, then they’re prbably a big deal. This culture f busyness is making it hard fr
emplyees t find wrk-life balance. Accrding t a recent study, ne in five highly engaged emplyees is at risk f
      burnut.
Persnally, I’m ging t stp saying “busy” when peple ask me hw I am. It sunds self-righteus (自以为
是的) and sets the wrng tne. Phrases like “I have limited access t email” and “I’ll respnd as sn as I get back”
sund like yu’re being held against yur will frm wrking as ppsed t making the mst f yur time ff.
      第 6页/共 13页
By rejecting the myth that business equals wrth, we free urselves and thers frm exhaustin. True success
isn’t abut wrking harder; it’s abut wrking smarter and finding balance. Let’s redefine what it means t be
prductive — and start valuing rest as much as effrt.
      8. Hw des the authr intrduce the tpic in the first paragraph?
      A. By quting famus peple. B. By presenting statistical data.
      C. By cmparing different pinins. D. By intrducing persnal experience.
      9. Why d we tend t think that busy peple are f high status?
      A. Our status can be attributed t ur scial mbility.
      B. We hld the belief that hard wrk leads t success.
      C. Our wn pprtunity fr success never cmes easily.
      D. We find few peple f high status have time fr leisure.
      10. What des the underlined phrase “knee-deep in” in Paragraph 3 prbably mean?
      A. Bred with. B. Wrried abut.
C Fully invlved in. D. Very interested in.
      11. What is the authr’s purpse in writing the passage?
      A. T advise emplyees n hw t achieve wrk-life balance.
      B. T share his persnal experience f vercming a bad habit.
      C. T intrduce a study n peple’s attitude twards busyness.
      D. T argue against the culture f equating busyness with wrth.
      D
T keep a Hula-Hp alft (悬浮) with rbts, it helps t be in shape — literally. Experiments with
hp-slinging rbts have revealed hw these rings stay up despite the pull f gravity. The shape f the rbt’s
bdy is a crucial factr, researchers reprt in the Jan. 7 Prceedings f the Natinal Academy f Sciences. The
shape needs t have “hips” — a slpe (斜面) that prvides upward frce t balance gravity. And a “waist” arch
      — like an hurglass (沙漏) — keeps the hp frm mving up r dwn and sliding ff.
Inspired by perfrmers near his hme in Greenwich Village, applied mathematician Leif Ristrph f New
Yrk University began cnsidering the physics f Hula-Hps. Previus studies, he and his cwrkers realized,
hadn’t explained hw the hp stays alft.
S Ristrph and his cwrkers gave it a try. In experiments, a circling cylindrical rbt culdn’t keep a hp
      第 7页/共 13页
frm sliding dwn. It was missing the essential upward frce, generated when a hp swings ver a slped shape.
But a cne-shaped rbt, with a slpe but n waistlike curve, als failed. If the hp began tward the tp f the
cne, the upward frce verpwered gravity, and the hp wuld mve up. If the hp began tward the bttm,
the upward frce wasn’t enugh t keep it alft, and it mved dwn. But an hurglass-shaped rbt kept a hp
      stably alft.
Peple shuld be able t hula-hp regardless f the bdy shape, by adapting their gyratins (旋转) based n
psitin changes f the hp. Indeed, the researchers were able t get a cne-shaped rbt t hula-hp by
adjusting the rate f gyratin depending n hw high the hp slid.
A crrect launch was als essential in the experiments. If the hp started ff t slw, the attempt wuld fail.
In successful sessins, the hp lined up with the gyrating bdy, s that the hp and the bdy always shifted in the
same directin. “That’s als the best way t launch a hp,” Ristrph says.
“We were surprised that an activity as ppular, fun, and healthy as hula hping wasn’t understd even at a
basic physics level,” says Ristrph. “As we made prgress n the research, we realized that the math and physics
      invlved are very subtle.”
      12. Which bdy shape is ideal fr Hula-Hping accrding t the experiment?
      A. Cne-shaped. B. Hurglass-shaped. C. Rund. D. Cylindrical.
      13. What is the message implied in the furth paragraph?
      A. Hula-hping can help shape peple’s bdy gradually.
      B. Rbts are flexible in learning human bdy mvements.
      C. Anyne can d hula-hping by adjusting their mvements.
      D. A perfect bdy shape is required t be a gd hula-hp player.
      14. What was essential fr a successful Hula-Hp launch in the experiments?
      A. Starting with the right shape. B. Oppsite mvement f the hp and the bdy.
      C. Using a hp f the prper size. D. Same directinal shifts f the hp and the bdy.
      15. Which can be used as a prper title fr the text?
      A. Scientists Identify the Perfect Hula Hp “Bdy Type”
      B. Hula-hping Inspires NYU Mathematicians
      C. Hw D Hula Hps Benefit Our Health?
      D. What D Hula Hps D fr Yur Bdy?
