Studies ver the past ten years shw that nly 16% f Americans reprt reading fr pleasure. Researchers believe this decline in reading will hurt hw peple learn, their relatinships, and their verall well-being.
In past psts, I’ve highlighted the benefits f reading fr pleasure. Reading can make us mre empathetic (同理心), imprve ur writing skills and fcus. Nwadays, we’re verladed by scial media — scrlling (滚动) dwn the screen, trying t multitask, and feeling pressed t reply quickly t every message r ntificatin.
Reading fr pleasure is an activity that allws us t take a break frm screens. It can help individuals maintain the skills that are slwly being lst because f scial media. Fall is a great time t start reading. I recently finished reading All the Way t the River by Elizabeth Gilbert, which tells the stry f her life after the success f Eat, Pray, Lve.
As we apprach a new seasn, it culd be the right time t start a mre prductive practice than staying cnnected t ur smartphnes. Turn away frm the screen, and cnsider turning tward a new adventure.

Frget the ld saying that physical activity wears ut yur heart. New research frm Australia has fund that peple wh are physically fit actually have significantly fewer ttal heartbeats each day, which culd add years t their lives.
Accrding t the study, athletes recrded an average (平均的) heart rate f 68 beats per minute (bpm), cmpared with 76 bpm fr thse wh were nt active. Over a 24-hur perid, that equals abut 97,920 heartbeats fr athletes and 109,440 fr nn-athletes, a difference f abut 10 percent fewer beats per day amng the fitter individuals.
“That’s abut 11,500 fewer beats every day,” says Prfessr La Gerche, the head f the HEART Labratry. “Even thugh athletes’ hearts wrk harder during exercise, their lwer resting rates mre than make up fr it.”
The study shws that the mst physically fit peple had resting heart rates as lw as 40 bpm, while the average persn’s rate ranged between 70 and 80 bpm. This means that even with intense (剧烈的) exercise, athletes use fewer heartbeats than nn-athletes ver a full day.
This study challenges the ld idea that the bdy is like a battery that runs ut f energy frm exercise. “The fitter yu are, the mre efficient (高效的) yur bdy becmes,“ Prfessr La Gerche explains. “Even if yu’re training hard fr an hur a day, yur heart beats mre slwly fr the ther 23 hurs. The net effect is fewer beats used verall.”
This lwer resting heart rate is a sign f fitness and als means better health. Regular exercise can imprve heart health, lwer the risk f heart disease, and imprve mental well-being. Althugh extreme events, like the Tur de France, may raise daily heart rates, Prfessr La Gerche says that the benefits f regular exercise far utweigh any risks.

      A. They becme smarter.B. They may hardly feel tired.
      C. They culd live lnger.D. They have an athletic build.
      9. What des the research find abut exercise?
      A. It saves daily heartbeats.B. It has a side effect n the ld.
      C. It is suitable fr all teens.D. It makes us feel calm and easy.
      10. What is prbably La Gerche’s suggestin fr better health?
      A. Have a gd sleep at night.B. Stp intense exercise.
      C. Train hard n the weekend.D. D wrkuts regularly.
      11. What can we infer abut fit peple frm the text?

If yu’re utside during a heat wave (热浪) in Texas, the shade f ak trees might seem like a relief. But when it’s really ht, levels f zne (O3) and ther air pllutants can becme wrryingly high in these areas, new research shws.
When stressed by heat, ak trees give ff chemicals, which can mix with car exhaust (尾气) t frm dangerus air pllutants. This happens even where yu can’t smell any car exhaust. Scientists frm Texas A&M University in Cllege Statin shared their new findings at the American Chemical Sciety fall meeting.
Peple expect t find air pllutin in and arund cities due t heavy traffic. “But at Texas A&M, the air smells beautiful,” says Renyi Zhang. The campus is abut 100 miles away frm the large cities. “Here,” he ntes, “the air is usually safe t breathe.” But that may nt be true during heat waves.
Zhang’s team set up equipment n tp f a building surrunded by ak trees, high abve passing cars and lcal surces f pllutin. This equipment culd mnitr O3, nitrgen xides frm cars, and isprene — a natural chemical released by ak trees. Isprene is nt harmful n its wn. But in the presence f sunlight, it can mix with nitrgen xides t prduce O3, which is harmful t humans.
During a mnth-lng event in August 2024, daytime temperatures hit 32℃ t 41℃. It wasn’t just the heat that made these days uncmfrtable. The equipment shwed that O3 levels climbed higher as the temperature increased. This was expected because heat speeds up the chemical reactins that create O3. Hwever, the levels reached much higher than expected, even when there wasn’t much car exhaust in the area.
“Studies like this can help us imprve ur air quality mnitring mdels,” says Russ Dickersn, a prfessr at the University f Maryland. “We can better predict (预测) bad-air days during heat waves. And that shuld help prtect peple’s health.”
      12. What did the new research aim t explre?
A Where heat waves hit hard.B. Hw we keep cl in summer.
      C. Where secnd-hand cars g.D. Hw ak trees react n ht days.
      13. What can we knw abut the campus in Cllege Statin frm Zhang’s wrds?
      A. Its air quality is typically gd.B. Its buildings are all ec-friendly.
      C. It is ften free frm ht weather.D. It has heavy traffic in the mrning.
      14. What des Russ Dickersn want t say abut the study?
      A. Its future mdels.B. Its disadvantages.
      C. Its general rule.D. Its great value.
      15. Which can be a suitable title fr the text?
      A. The Imprtance f High Oak TreesB. The Hidden Risk f Oak in Heat Waves
      C. A Significant Rise in Air PllutinD. An Increasingly Serius Prblem in Cllege
      【答案】12. D 13. A 14. D 15. B
