In 2008, a big wildfire called the Freeway Cmplex Fire brke ut in Orange Cunty. Friedrich and her husband had t act quickly t save animals frm the fire. They rped pigs and helped guide frightened hrses int trailers t mve them t safety. They shuld have rescued (营救) all their neighbrs’ hrses, but the fire was getting clser.
That experience made Friedrich realize that there wasn’t a gd rescue plan in place. In respnse, hrse wners in Orange Cunty frmed the Large Animal Rescue Team (LART) in 2008. The grup helped save hrses and ther animals frm wildfires. Friedrich jined the team in 2009.
Hwever, because f limited resurces and fewer vlunteers, the grup recently decided t nly perate within San Juan Capistran, the city where it is based. This means that hrse wners in nearby areas, like Yrba Linda, will n lnger have supprt during fires. This decisin has caused cncern amng peple wh live utside the city.
The idea f a lcal animal rescue team is nt unique t Orange Cunty, but this is the first time an rganizatin has reduced its cverage in this way. In the past, vlunteers traveled frm different areas t help during emergencies (紧急情况). Nw, that supprt is limited.
Althugh LART was praised fr its success in rescuing animals, during ne fire, there were prblems with cmmunicatin, which caused delays (延迟). The cunty recgnized the team’s hard wrk during the 2020 fire seasn, but there were still issues with hw the rescue effrts were managed.
With fewer vlunteers, LART wuld n lnger manage the prgram after January 1. Orange Cunty has nt yet shwn interest in taking ver the prgram. “Fr nw, lcal hrse wners are turning t ther strategies (策略) and wrking t be prepared fr emergencies. We understand that it’s imprtant t be ready befre fires strike,” says Friedrich.

On a warm April evening n England’s Jurassic Cast, I jined a seaweed fraging curse. Our guide, Dan Sctt, taught us abut the different parts f seaweed, hw t harvest it sustainably by cutting withut killing the plant, and which types are safe t eat. The experience made me think: Des fraging help us recnnect with nature, and is it gd fr the planet?
Fraging can create a deep cnnectin t nature. Janani Sivarajah, a researcher n city fraging, says it brings peple tgether, cnnects peple t the land, and brings peple back t their rts. Dan Sctt agrees, believing that teaching peple abut edible plants makes them mre likely t prtect nature while fraging.
Fraging is the ldest way f getting fd and is becming very ppular again. It is cmmn amng peple wh care abut the envirnment and want t avid pesticides and industrial fd systems. Hwever, its ppularity has led t rules in sme US natinal parks t limit hw much peple can gather.
The effect f fraging n the envirnment is cmplicated. Fraging can use up lcal resurces that wildlife needs, particularly when it is dne t sell fr mney. Laws shw these wrries, s fraging is nt allwed in sme Canadian parks, and the UK’s Natinal Trust warns against taking t much. Sustainable fraging means taking nly small amunts fr yurself. But Dan Sctt admits that if thusands f peple fraged n the beach, it wuld nt be sustainable.
Health risks are anther imprtant thing t think abut. Sivarajah warns that plants in cities can absrb harmful metals frm car pllutin. Seaweed has high levels f substances like arsenic and lead. The biggest danger, hwever, cmes frm picking the wrng thing. Fr example, he is very clear that lking fr mushrms needs learning frm an expert, nt just bks, because deadly pisnus types exist. His advice is jining a grup and learning frm experienced peple.
      8. Hw des the authr intrduce the tpic in paragraph 1?
      A. By listing numbers.
      B. By answering sme questins.
      C. Thrugh a brief cmparisn.
      D. Thrugh a persnal experience.
      9. What is Dan Sctt’s attitude twards Janani Sivarajah’s pinin?
      A. Unclear.B. Supprtive.C. Wrried.D. Dubtful.
      10. Why are peple prevented frm fraging in sme parks in Canada?
      A. Fraging can have bad effects n lcal wildlife.
      B. Fraging causes lcal farmers t make less mney.
      C. Fraging ften leads t peple picking up sme pisnus plants.
      D. Fraging influences the develpment f Canada’s fd systems.
      11. What can be a suitable title fr the text?
      A. Why is fraging a valuable practice?
      B. The benefits and challenges f fraging
      C. Methds f fraging fr seaweed safely
      D. Why is fraging becming ppular again?

Researchers at Stanfrd University have used artificial intelligence (AI) (人工智能) and brain scanning (扫描) technlgy t study the brain activity f students with math learning disabilities. This research aims t better understand the neurlgical (神经系统的) reasns behind these challenges, which affect ne in five students in the United States.
The study built n years f research int hw learning disabilities affect children’s brains. By using new AI tls, the team was able t explre these prblems in greater detail. The study created “digital twins” — AI mdels that cpy the brain activity f real students as they slve math prblems.
The researchers tested 45 students, aged 7 t 9, including 21 with math learning disabilities. While the students slved basic additin and subtractin (减法) prblems, their brain activity was tracked by a brain scanning machine. The AI mdels, r “digital twins”, were then trained t cpy the students’ answers and brain activity.
The results were surprising. It turned ut that the prblem wasn’t t little brain activity, as many had thught, but t much. The students with learning disabilities shwed signs f t much excitement in brain areas cnnected t math. The digital twins shwed the same patterns, which means that t much neural activity culd cause cnfusin in slving math prblems.
The study suggests that students with learning disabilities may need mre training t better their perfrmance. The researchers hpe that their “digital twins” can be used t create persnalized learning plans fr students, helping t design mre effective educatinal prgrams.
Hwever a researcher said that we cannt verread the results. The mdel needs refinement. There is mre wrk t d, but it des pint in sme prmising new directins fr further research.
“The study makes us have a system t test targeted strategies befre trying them in real classrms,” Vind Menn, a prfessr at Stanfrd, said. “That can speed up the ability t design effective educatinal prgrams and make real prgress fr kids with math learning disabilities.”
      12. What is the purpse f the Stanfrd University study?
      A. T change the existing educatin system.
      B. T teach students better math learning methds.
      C. T raise slutins t challenges facing teachers.
      D. T find ut the neurlgical causes f math learning disabilities.
      13. What were the students asked t d during the experiment?
      A. Design an AI mdel.B. Jin a math club tgether.
      C. Take ntes abut math.D. Wrk ut math prblems.
      14. What des the underlined wrd “refinement” in paragraph 6 mean?
      A. Cmments.B. Inventin.
      C. Imprvement.D. Respnsibilities.
      15. What des the last paragraph mainly talk abut cncerning the study?
      A. Its wide use.B. Its psitive effects.
      C. Its disadvantages.D. Its difficulties.
      【答案】12. D 13. D 14. C 15. B
