There I was, after 12 hurs f travel, standing n Lexingtn Avenue and hping fr a New Yrk miracle. I’d nly been in Manhattan fr an hur, and already was flagging dwn a taxi Late at night and shuting “Fllw that cab!”
Well, mre accurately: “Fllw that little dt n this tiny map.” Meaning the GPS-enabled dt mving arund a screen as part f the Find My iPhne feature. The dt indicating that smewhere ut there, in ne f New Yrk City’s ther 13,000 taxi cabs, sat my daughter’s blue bag that she’d left behind, cntaining her diary schl laptp, ntebks, iPhne and Air Pds she’d bught with her saved-up allwance.
The daughter wh a that very mment was curled up n the htel bed regretting her thughtlessness, in tears. I was a small-twn dad in a huge, unfamiliar metrplis (大都市), with maybe half an idea f what I was ding, at best. But I culdn’t stand t see her crying. I had-t get that bag back.
An explanatin is in rder at the airprt terminal, we’d had t switch t anther taxicab t get a ride int Manhattan. Our first taxi driver quted us a fare higher than it shuld cst, and when I asked why, he immediately threw us ut f his cab. We piled int the next waiting taxi. It wasn’t until getting t ur htel, an hur later, that we realized the first taxi driver had sped away with the bag inside.
While I called 311 (非紧急情况电话), my wife remembered she’d set up tracking n ur daughter’s phne in case f emergencies, and pulled up its map, excited t discver a little dt that refreshed every 15 secnds r s, traveling arund the streets f midtwn. Talking t the wman wrking 311, I casually remarked, “I’m half-tempted t get anther cab and have them chase after this dt n the map.”
“Well,” she said “that’s prbably what a New Yrker wuld d.” Challenge accepted. The first taxi driver then pulled ver laughed at my wild gse chase, but the secnd said, “Yeah. Get in.” His name was Gani. And s began ur three-hur hunt fr the missing bag.

“Anxiety.” The very wrd invites discmfrt. Its effects—shrtness f breath, punding heart, muscle tensin—are utright upsetting. But, as a clinician, I find that we tend t miss ut n many valuable pprtunities presented by this human emtin. In and f itself, anxiety is nt deadly, nr is it a disease. Quite the cntrary: it is an indicatr f brain and sensry health. Once we accept that it is a nrmal, thugh uncmfrtable, part f life, we can use it t help us.
We all knw wrking ut at the gym is hard. By nature, a “gd wrkut” is uncmfrtable, since it invlves pushing ur physical strength past what we can easily d. The sweet spt f exercise is always a smewhat challenging experience. Similarly, if yu want t be emtinally strnger, yu need t face sme tensin. Fr example, ne effective treatment fr fear is expsure therapy (疗法), which invlves gradually encuntering things that make ne anxius, reducing fear ver time.
Humans are scial creatures. When my patients learn t pen up t their partners abut their anxieties, they almst always reprt a greater sense f emtinal clseness. Als, as internatinal relatinship expert Sue Jhnsn teaches, when we express ur need fr cnnectin during challenging mments (e.g., “I’m having a hard time right nw and culd really use yur supprt”), it creates greater cnnectin and turns ur anxiety int lve.
Frm time t time, we find urselves at the end f ur rpe. Our respnsibilities pile up, ur resurces break dwn, and we feel uncmfrtably anxius—what we’re experiencing is called stress. Simply put, the demands placed upn us utweigh ur available resurces, just like a set f scales (天平) ging ut f balance. Fcusing n wrk and pretending everything is OK nly leads t disastrus results. Medical treatment fr stress may functin fr a while, but it tends t make things wrse in the lng run. The nly slutin t deal with stress is t d the mathematics t balance the scales.
8. What des the authr say abut anxiety?
A. It is an invitatin t diseases.
B. It indicates stable mental health.
C. It csts us many valuable chances.
D. It is a natural emtinal expressin.
9. Why des the authr mentin “gd wrkut” in paragraph 2?
A. T prve hw exercise influences emtins.
B. T suggest an effective way t challenge limits.
C. T explain hw anxiety builds emtinal strength.
D. T shw a psitive cnnectin between mind and bdy.
10. What is paragraph 3 mainly abut?
A. The key t clseness is partners’ supprt.
B. Sharing anxieties imprves relatinships.
C. Humans are defined by their scial nature.
D. Expressing feelings keeps us ff anxieties.
11. Accrding t the last paragraph, hw can we deal with stress?
A. Devte mre energy t ur wrk.
B. Increase resurces available t us.
C. Seek prfessinal medical treatment.
D. Master advanced mathematical skills.
