Later, a statue f the gddess was placed in the cave, and many visitrs came flding every year t pray fr gd health. I remember when I started telling peple abut my upcming sl (独自的) travel t Mnglia, I was met with surprise and ften cnfusin. My manager at the time gave me a funny lk and warned me against ging there. I didn’t panic. I’d dne my research. Mnglia wasn’t as dangerus as peple thught — in fact, it’s far safer than a lt f mre frequented cuntries, like Suth America.
The thing abut Mnglia is… n ne has been there. I dn’t knw a single ther persn in my life wh has been there. Except fr the friends I made while I was there.
That’s the thing abut sl travel — yu dn’t technically have t d it alne. Since Mnglia held sme risks t it and is cnsidered ne f the mst remte regins in the wrld, I decided t jin a small-grup tur.
I admit I was a little nervus. Lking up past trips n this cmpany’s website, it lked like it was a whle bunch f cuples that frequented these turs. I started picturing six cuples, enjying a Mnglian sunset… and then little ld me. Just ff t the side, enjying it n my wn.
When I arrived in Ulaanbaatar, the capital f Mnglia, and met the rest f the tur, I was bth surprised and thrilled t realise that, f the ten peple n tur, there was nly ne pair. Everybdy else was there n their wn. And instead f sitting ff t the side like I’d feared, I’d been tent-paired with a lvely yung American girl called Annie. On what ther ccasins might I have met her if nt fr this sl trip? The decisin t travel sl, t nt let the fact that I didn’t have a travel cmpanin stp me, was what brught us tgether.
And that’s the beauty f travelling sl. When I’m alne, I’m mre likely t branch ut and talk t the lcals and strangers, even if there’s a language barrier. And, in my experience, mst peple are gd peple. Start up a cnversatin, ask questins, and be curius. Mst imprtantly: dn’t be a turist. Be a traveller.
      24. What des the authr say abut Mnglia?
      A. It is hardly accessible.B. It is suitable fr sl travel.
      C. It is a ppular destinatin.D. It is safer than peple think.
      25. Why was the authr nervus abut the small-grup tur?
      A. She feared being left ut.B. She feared being t ld t bnd.
      C. She was unsure f the risks ahead.D. She was unfamiliar with such turs.
      26. What is the authr’s purpse in mentining Annie?
      A. T illustrate a benefit f sl travel.B. T shw the friendliness f the small-grup.
      C. T stress the grwing ppularity f sl travel.D. T explain the imprtance f cperatin in travel.
      27. Accrding t the authr, what is mst attractive abut sl travel?
      A. The thrill f self-discvery.B. The freedm f being alne.
      C. The authentic engagement with thers.D. The imprvement f cnversatin skills.

Have yu ever played a cmputer game fr a lng time and then kept seeing the game’s images afterward? This happened t me with the classic shape-falling game Tetris (俄罗斯方块), created in 1985 by Alexey Pajitnv.

Even when I stpped, my brain was still playing, with the blcks falling in my mind. I started lking at bjects in the real wrld and thinking abut hw they culd be mved and stacked tgether. I even dreamed abut Tetris. I was experiencing the cmmn “Tetris effect”.
Intrduced by jurnalist Jeffrey Gldsmith in his 1994 Wired magazine article called This Is Yur Brain n Tetris, the effect has been bserved by psychlgists and researchers. The lasting images f Tetris are due t the “Zeigarnik effect”, in which peple have better memries f uncmpleted tasks than thse f cmpleted nes. Tetris, being a game that technically never ends, keeps yu thinking f the game’s unfinished task, reprted Tech Times. And the catchy music stays with yu, t.
There are als psitives t the Tetris Effect. In his 1991 study, psychlgist Richard Haier at the University f Califrnia fund that cntinuusly playing Tetris resulted in the thickness f the cerebral crtex (大脑皮层) increasing, which imprves brain efficiency (效率), reprted psychlgy website Practical Pie. Haier’s discvery gt Tetris put int the Guinness Wrld Recrds Vide Gamer’s Editin 2008, as the “first vide game t be prven t imprve brain functining and efficiency”.
S, the next time yu want t play a cmputer game, why nt try the classic Tetris and see if it imprves yur brain functin? But be warned, yu’ll likely be seeing falling blcks everywhere.

      A. Serius.B. Amusing.
      C. Wrried.D. Dubtful.

“Rubbish is immrtal,” wrte Czech authr Ivan Klima in his nvel Lve and Garbage. “What else is there that is s indestructible?” And even as we make the wrld int a greener place by embracing renewable energy, the prblem f hw t deal with waste remains a difficult ne t slve.
The thing is, renewable energy tls like wind turbines (涡轮机) d a lt f gd, but they als need replacing and recycling when they get ld. Many f the parts can be melted dwn and used again, but this cmes at a cst t the envirnment, because the prcess prduces carbn emissins. Luckily, experts have been wrking n ways t use these giant turbines again at the end f their lives.
Old blades (叶片) have been used as nise barriers next t rads, as bike sheds, and as children’s playgrund equipment. And sme f the stems — r nacelles, as the parts that cntain the engines are knwn-have even been used fr husing.
Last year, a Swedish energy cmpany called Vattenfall and Dutch firm Blade-Made wrked tgether t create a tiny hme made frm a decmmissined turbine. Shwn during Dutch Design Week in 2024, it’s 4 meters wide, 10 meters lng and 3 meters high and accrding t CNN is “surprisingly light and airy” thanks t glass drs at either end. Crucially, it als agreed with Dutch building rules.
But with mre and mre turbines expected t be replaced in the cming years, culd they really help t slve husing crises? Js de Krieger is a c-funder f Blade-Made, and he says, “Why nt?” His cmpany, alng with its cllabratrs, is planning t create 10 tiny hmes using turbines. He tld CNN that making ld turbines int hmes is “the mst cmplex thing yu can d,” but nw it’s been dne, anything is pssible. “We need slutins,” he said, adding that he wants t “create stries, instead f waste.” Klima wuld surely apprve.
      32. What aspect f wind turbines des the passage fcus n?
      A. Their high cst f prductin.B. Their new uses after retirement.
      C. Their rle in reducing carbn emissins.D. Their cntributin t greener husing.
      33. Hw can ld turbine blades be dealt with?
      A. Burned fr fuel.B. Used as rad barriers.
      C. Thrwn away safely.D. Applied as playing facilities.
      34. What des the wrd “decmmissined” in paragraph 4 prbably mean?
      A. Out-f-use.B. Up-t-date.C. Very expensive.D. Fully repaired.
      35. What can we infer frm Js de Krieger’s wrds?
      A. He needs t create stries fr Bland-Made.
      B. He des the jb t win apprval frm Klima.
      C. He has dubts abut whether the idea will wrk.
      D. He hpes t expand the business in turbine huses.
