Plymita tree snails(蜗牛), the mst striking clrful snails in the wrld, are highly prized in eastern Cuba. Belved fr their patterned clrs, the six species f snails have becme increasingly rare t find. "One f the reasns why I’m interested in these snails is that they’re s beautiful," said Angus Davisn, a prfessr frm the University f Nttingham. "Their beauty attracts peple wh cllect and trade shells. But the very thing that makes them interesting t me is, unfrtunately, what’s endangering them as well. "
Recently, Davisn fund a British listing ffering seven Plymita snail shells fr £160. "Yu can easily imagine hw cllecting shells wuld drive a ppulatin int lcal extinctin," Davisn said. That’s why Davisn reached ut t scientists at the Universidad de Oriente in Santiag, Cuba, t give a helping hand where it’s needed mst.
Tgether with cnservatin bilgist Bernard Reyes-Tur, Davisn is trying t save the six knwn species f Plymita befre it’s t late, f which P. sulphursa is listed as extremely endangered. As Davisn runs genetic testing in England t understand the species, Reyes-Tur is actively raising the endangered snails in captivity(圈养). Due t Cuba’s ht climate and undependable pwer, Reyes-Tur’s wrk has been challenging. "They haven’t bred(繁殖) yet, but they’re ding well," he said.
Like all snails, the Plymita tree snails act as nature’s "clean-up crews" by eating bark and mss and bringing nutrients int the sil. They’re als imprtant fd surces fr ther endangered animals native t the cuntry, like the Cuban kite.
When running their respective prjects frm half a wrld away, Davisn and Reyes-Tur hpe that their internatinal effrts can lead t heightened cnservatin awareness. "Eastern Cuba is the nly place in the wrld where these snails are fund," Davisn said. "We hpe we can use the genetic infrmatin we can bring t cntribute t their cnservatin."

Over his decades-lng career as a late-night cmedy TV writer, Je Tplyn has created varius jkes and has instructed adult-level curses n cmedy writing. S when generative artificial intelligence (AI) came alng, Tplyn cmbined the linguistic(语言的) skills f large language mdels, r LLMs, with the lessns he taught his human students t create an AI tl named Witscript-a web app that generates jkes and wrdplay frm users’ prmpts(提示), like image descriptins.
Last year, Tplyn and Witscript cmpeted in a three-day jke-writing cntest based n eight news tpics. Tplyn picked his best jkes - and als selected Witscript’s best material - then cmedian Mike Perkins delivered the lines t live audiences in Ls Angeles, with half the jkes frm each surce. Tgether with Ori Amir, a stand-up cmic, Tplyn recrded the perfrmances and measured the length and ludness f the laughter each jke caused. Tplyn and Amir fund that, by thse measures, the humr effectiveness f AI-generated jkes was cmparable t that f human-written jkes.
"With advances in LLMs, generating sme kinds f humr becmes easier fr AI. Hwever, humr can be subtle(微妙的)," says Prfessr Christian F. Hempelmann at East Texas A&M University. "Fun jkes can be used t mve past embarrassing mments r manage relatinships," he adds. As AI chatbts are increasingly being used as therapists and cmpanins, many experts think it’ll be essential fr the mdels t understand and respnd apprpriately t subtler frms f humr.
Witscript imprves the prcess even further. Tplyn cmbined his jke-writing algrithms (算法) with a large language mdel. By giving Witscript lgical rules and structured ways t rganize infrmatin, he allwed the system t take a tpic sentence entered by a human user and use it t generate riginal replies. This inner framewrk gives Witscript the ability t recgnize keywrds and t mix and replace wrds when delivering its jkes.
"As the lneliness spreads, peple might feel mre at ease with virtual assistants r rbtic cmpanins that can tell ccasinal jkes. Still, humr cmpsed by AI can be unpredictable in tne and quality and fails t see either the brader r persnal cntext," says researcher Julia Rayz f Purdue University.
28. What did Je Tplyn and Ori Amir find abut AI and human-written jkes?
A. They were equally funny. B. They prmted their writing.
C. They were hard t accept. D. They tested cmedians’ ability.
29. What des Christian F. Hempelmann suggest abut humr?
A. It is really difficult fr AI t prduce. B. It leads t awkward situatins.
C. It centers largely upn wise wrdplay. D. It has pwerful scial functins.
30. What des the text say abut Witscript?
A. It fcuses n visual humr. B. It relies n human-written rules.
C. It never requires users’ prmpts. D. It avids using language mdels.
31. What is Julia Rayz’s wrry abut AI-generated humr?
A. It is t abstract fr audiences. B. It fails t make peple laugh effectively.
C. It is shrt f persnal cnnectins. D. It is easier t cntrl than human humr.
D
Yu meet smene new, trade a few wrds, and it feels like yu’ve knwn them frever. With thers, n matter hw much time yu spend tgether, the cnnectin never cmes. Why? A new study shws that peple whse brains respnd in similar ways t the wrld are mre likely t becme friends later.
In the study, Carlyn Parkinsn at the University f Califrnia, Ls Angeles and her clleagues emplyed 288 students. Just befre classes began and befre anyne had a chance t build cnnectins, each student entered a brain scanner. Inside, they watched 14 shrt mvie clips(片段), cvering dcumentaries, cmedies, debates, fd, sprts and science. The researchers tracked activity acrss 214 brain regins. Each student’s brain left a unique signature f hw they paid attentin, reacted, and interpreted what they saw.
Tw mnths later, all the students in the prgram cmpleted surveys asking wh they spent free time with. They repeated the surveys six mnths after that. These results created a living map f friendships- wh became clse, wh separated and wh stayed distant. When the researchers cmpared this map t the brain data, patterns appeared. Students wh became friends eight mnths later had already shwn mre similar brain respnses back at the start. The strngest verlap(重叠) appeared in the rbitófrntal crtex, a regin linked t hw we assign value and meaning.
Interestingly, at the tw-mnth mark, there was n big difference between the brains f friends and nn-friends, meaning that early friendships may frm ut f cnvenience-living nearby, attending the same events, r sitting tgether in class. But as time passes, peple srt themselves ut. Thse with deeper neural similarities grw clser. Others mve away.
The brain regins that matter mst belng t netwrks that cmbine tgether memries, beliefs, and emtins int a picture f what’s happening. When tw peple’s brains line up in these areas, cnversatins flw mre easily, and cmmunicatin feels natural. "Peple whse thinking prcesses are mre similar find it easier t get n. When they say smething, they knw what the ther is thinking because it’s hw they think themselves," explained Carlyn Parkinsn.
32. What were the students made t d during the study?
A. Film a few vides fcused n friendships. B. Watch vides f different styles and tpics.
C. Reprt their feelings after watching vides. D. Share their persnal scial activities in life.
33. What is the key factr in frming lng-term friendships accrding t the study?
A. Shared tastes in lifestyle. B. Cmmn living envirnments.
C. Frequent cmmunicatin. D. Similar brain respnse patterns.
34. Why d peple with similar brain respnses cnnect better?
A. They have mre pprtunities t meet each ther.
B. They are mre skilled at expressing emtins.
C. They interpret the wrld in a similar way.
D. They enjy the same hbbies and activities. 35. Which is the best title fr the text?
A. The Science Behind Lasting Friendships B. The Rle f Brain Scans in Friendship
C. When Similar Peple Becme Friends D. Hw Friendships Develp Over Time
