Every day, the wrkers hide Wald in a different spt n the cnstructin site, giving the children a new challenge. As sn as Haney finds ut that the kids have fund Wald, the cutut gets mved t a new secret hiding spt and the game begins again.
Heidi Presctt, a spkeswman fr Beacn Health System, which runs the hspital, said the prject began ne winter when the wrkers put up an inflatable (可充气的) snwman fr the children. The kids lved the idea and frm there it quickly develped int the Wald cutut.
“It didn’t take lng t catch n, the kids whether they are in the rms r in a play area, they lk acrss as sn as they get t the windw,” Presctt tld ABC News. “They will lk all ver the building, pint and exclaim (惊叫) ‘I fund him!’”
Haney, meanwhile, simply enjys knwing that he can brighten the children’s day and make them frget that they are in hspital fr a few minutes. Jasn has said ver and ver again, “All I did this fr was t make the kids smile.”
Haney even created a Facebk grup where he leaves clues as t where Wald might be hiding and the children can pst phts f their findings. The prject has been a huge success, with hundreds f peple sharing phts f Wald and happy parents thanking Haney fr making an therwise difficult visit t the hspital just that little bit mre enjyable.

Strangers are mre likely t becme friends if their brains respnd similarly t mvie clips, suggesting neural (神经的) activity can predict relatinships.
Acrss cultures, humans seek like-minded peple — a phenmenn called hmphily — which explains past findings f neural similarities amng friends. But researchers didn’t knw if this cmes frm friends grwing alike ver time r peple being drawn t similar thught prcesses.
Carlyn Parkinsn at the University f Califrnia, Ls Angeles and her clleagues cllected brain scans frm 41 students befre they began a graduate prgramme. During the scans, participants watched a series f 14 mvie clips spanning a range f styles such as dcumentary r cmedy, and varius tpics including fd, sprts and science. The researchers then analysed the neural activity f each participant acrss 214 brain regins.
The participants — alng with the 246 ther students in their prgramme — cmpleted a survey tw mnths afterwards and again after an additinal six mnths asking wh they enjyed spending their free time with. Peple wh were friends at the eight-mnth mark had mre similar respnses in a prtin f the left rbitfrntal crtex (眼窝前额皮质), a brain regin invlved in prcessing subjective value, than thse wh were furthest apart in the scial netwrk. This effect remained significant even after accunting fr similarities in taste based n hw much peple rated their wn enjyment r interest in the mvie clips.
Tw mnths int the prgramme, friends and nn-friends had n neural difference, suggesting peple may initially frm friendships based n prximity (距离) befre finding clser friends ver time.
Supprting this, when friendships changed between the tw surveys, participants wh grew clser had significantly greater similarities in the activity f 42 brain regins than thse wh drifted apart. The link remained significant even after accunting fr factrs such as age, gender and hmetwn.
Dunbar, wh wasn’t invlved with the research, desn’t find these results surprising. Rather, they cnfirm what many have lng suspected — “that like attracts like, rather than peple thrwn tgether by accidents draw clser in their traits”, he says. “In ther wrds, clse friends are brn, nt made.”
8. What is the key questin the research aims t slve?
A. Hw lng it takes fr strangers t becme clse friends.
B. Whether neural similarities cme frm shared traits r experiences.
C. Why the left rbitfrntal crtex affects friendship frmatin.
D. Hw mvie clips influence peple’s neural activity.
9. What d we knw abut the research prcess?
A. Participants were asked sme questins befre watching mvie clips.
B. Participants did surveys n their favrite mvies.
C. Brain data was cllected befre tracking changes in friendships.
D. The surveys fcused n participants’ pinins abut friendship.
10. What is Dunbar’s attitude twards the research results?
A. Apprving.B. Skeptical.C. Critical.D. Neutral.
11. Which saying best matches the research’s main cnclusin?
A. Nt an enemy, nt a cuple.
B. A friend in need is a friend indeed.
C. Distance makes the heart grw fnder.
D. Birds f a feather flck tgether.

A chatbt (聊天机器人) might nt break a sweat every time yu ask it t make yur shpping list r cme up with its best dad jkes. But ver time, the planet might.
As generative AI such as large language mdels, r LLMs, becmes everywhere, we nw face crucial questins. Fr every interactin with AI, hw much energy is used — and hw much carbn dixide is emitted (排放)?
In June, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman claimed that an average ChatGPT ask uses as much energy as an ven des in a little ver ne secnd. AI research firm Epch AI previusly calculated a similar estimate. Hwever, sme experts say the claim lacks key cntext, like what an “average” ask even is.
“If yu wanted t be thrugh abut it, yu wuld have t give a range,” says Sasha Luccini, an AI researcher at the AI firm Hugging Face. “Yu can’t just thrw a number ut there.”
Majr players including OpenAI and Anthrpic have the data, but they’re nt sharing. Instead, researchers can nly piece tgether limited clues frm pen-surce LLMs. One study in Frntiers in Cmmunicatin examined 14 such mdels, including thse frm Meta and DeepSeek, and fund that sme mdels prduce up t 70 times as much CO₂ emissins as thers.
But even these numbers ffer an incmplete picture. Things get mre dire after factring in mdel training, manufacturing and maintaining hardware, and hw widely generative AI is expected t spread int ur daily lives.
LLMs are energy-hungry, in part because f their large number f parameters (参数) — the internal settings a mdel adjusts during training t imprve perfrmance. The mre parameters, the mre capacity the mdel has t learn patterns and relatinships in data. GPT-4 is estimated t have ver a trillin parameters.
These mdels are hused in massive data centers acrss the wrld and laded n servers cntaining pwerful chips called graphics prcessing units. GPUs d the cmputatins needed t generate helpful utputs. The mre parameters, typically the mre chips that are needed.
And that requires a lt f energy. Already, 4.4 percent f all energy in the United States ges tward data centers. By 2028, this number is prjected t grw t up t 12 percent.
12. Hw des the authr intrduce?
A. By making a cntrast.
B. By presenting alarming statistics.
C. By quting a leading expert in the field.
D. By defining key technical terms.
13. What d sme experts think f Sam Altman’s claim?
A. They think it prperly accunts fr cmplex asks.
B. They cnsider it an versimplificatin.
C. They argue the claim is based n utdated r inaccurate data.
D. They believe it underestimates the energy used per ask.
14. What des the underlined wrd “dire” in paragraph 6 prbably mean?
A. Insignificant.B. Direct and straightfrward.
C. Extremely serius.D. Dirty r plluted.
15. What is the majr message f this text?
A. Reducing parameters is the key t envirnment-friendly generative AI.
B. The financial cst f AI hardware is the main barrier t its develpment.
C. The benefits f generative AI justify its substantial energy cnsumptin.
D. Generative AI’s grwth is creating a severe energy cnsumptin crisis.
【答案】12. A 13. B 14. C 15. D
