Engineering in the U.S. has lng been a male-dminated prfessin. Fifty years ag, it lked like that might change.
In 1970, the percentage f wmen majring in engineering was less than 1%. In 1979, that number was 9%. Many hped wmen wuld cntinue t enter the field at the same rate. But that’s nt what happened. Tday, nly 21% f engineering majrs are wmen, a number largely unchanged since 2000.
I am a histrian wh, alng with my clleagues, surveyed 251 wmen engineers wh graduated frm cllege in the 1970s. These pineers reflected n the challenges they faced and had advice fr wmen entering the field tday.
Jessie, a survey taker, explained, “The greatest challenge fr me was cntinuing t believe in myself, when all the messages I was getting were that I wuld never be taken seriusly r prmted r given raises at the same rate as men, wh were clearly less qualified and nt as smart as I was.”
A chemical engineer wh wrked in manufacturing agreed, “Yu have t prve yurself just because yu are female. And yu have t wrk twice as hard!”
A civil engineer said, “We are ‘wmen engineers.’ Peple dn’t refer t a man as a ‘man engineer’ — he’s an engineer. We are cnstantly reminded that we dn’t truly belng.” Anther civil engineer stated, “On many levels, yu’re never quite ne f the grups.”
Wmen als talked abut family caregiving respnsibilities. A retired vice president frm a majr chemical cmpany stated, “Yung wmen engineers are n an equal fting until they have children, then they struggle t balance wrk and family—and cmpete with men wh dn’t have the same husehld respnsibilities.”
But ver the years, things have changed a lt. Yung wmen engineers are mre accepted, mstly because there are just mre f them.
Many wmen engineers hailed the benefits f their chsen career. A prgram manager in manufacturing stated that engineering is the best degree. A mechanical engineer said, “It will give yu the flexibility t d almst anything. It is als satisfying t see the effects f what yu have dne.”

The lng-held assumptin that intelligence is the primary driver f academic achievement is challenged by a recent study in Human Behavir. The study, led by Dr. Malan frm University f Lndn and jintly carried ut by a grup f internatinal experts, has revealed that nn-cgnitive (非认知的) skills, such as mtivatin, self-regulatin and academic interest, are n less imprtant than intelligence in determining academic success. The influence f these skills accrues thrughut a child’s educatin, with genetic (基因的) factrs playing a significant rle in shaping this develpmental path.
The study tracked ver 10,000 children frm age 7 t 16 in England and Wales and used twin studies and DNA analysis t investigate the impact f nn-cgnitive skills n academic utcmes as well as the influential factrs, like genes and envirnment, that affect these skills.
One striking finding is the grwing rle f genetics in shaping nn-cgnitive skills and their impact n academic achievement. Researchers created a special methd knwn as the “plygenic scre” t measure these skills and fund that genetic effects assciated with nn-cgnitive skills became increasingly predictive f academic achievement, nearly dubling between the ages f 7 and 16. By the end f required schling, genetic influence n nn-cgnitive skills was as strng as that n cgnitive skills in predicting academic success.
Besides, by cmparing children frm the same family, researchers culd separate the impact f shared family envirnment frm genetic factrs. “We fund that hw children were raised in the family played a significant rle, althugh the increasing influence f nn-cgnitive genetics n academic achievement was still evident,” said Dr. Alleg, a c-researcher in the study.
The findings have far-reaching implicatins fr educatin. The study suggests that schls shuld develp prgrams t supprt students’ emtinal and scial develpment. Dr. Malan said, “By ding s, we can create a mre inclusive and effective learning envirnment fr students.”
The study als highlights the need fr further research int the cmplex interactin between genes, envirnment and educatin. By understanding these factrs, educatrs and plicymakers can develp mre effective strategies t supprt students’ verall develpment and achieve better educatinal utcmes.
12. What des the underlined wrd “accrues” in paragraph 1 mean?
A. Munts.B. Remains.C. Varies.D. Surfaces.
13. Why was the special methd used in the study?
A. T predict students’ academic achievement.
B. T measure the rle f envirnment in learning.
C. T evaluate the genetic impact n nn-cgnitive skills.
D. T assess the academic influence f cgnitive abilities.
14. What are the researchers mst likely t recmmend?
A. Advanced math curses.B. AI prgramming wrkshps.
C. Writing training prgrams.D. Cmmunity service prjects.
15. What is the best title fr the text?
A. Prmting Effective LearningB. The Overlked Benefits f Genes
C. Unlcking Academic PtentialD. The Hidden Key t Academic Success
