All f ur hard wrk didn’t make me feel cnfident by the time the shw came. I sat at the gate and sweated it ut while I watched Becky and her hrse charge thrugh the curse and finish in first place.
My turn finally came. I put n my hat, rubbed Cwby’s neck and entered the arena. At the signal, we dashed tward the first fence, jumped it withut truble and raced n t the next ne. Cwby then flew ver the secnd, third and furth fences like a bird and I turned him tward the finish line.
As we crssed the line the crwd was shcked int silence. Cwby and I had beaten Becky and her fancy hrse by tw secnds!

It’s cmmn knwledge that the wman in Lenard da Vinci’s mst famus painting seems t lk back at bservers, fllwing them with her eyes n matter where they stand in the rm. But this cmmn knwledge turns ut wrng.
A new study finds that the wman in the painting is actually lking ut at an angle that’s 15. 4 degrees ff t the bserver’s right-well utside f the range that peple nrmally believe when they think smene is lking right at them. In ther wrds, said the study authr, Hrstmann, “She’s nt lking at yu. “ This is smewhat irnic, because the entire phenmenn f a persn’s gaze (凝视) in a phtgraph r painting seeming t fllw the viewer is called the “Mna Lisa effect” . That effect is abslutely real, Hrstmann said. If a persn is illustrated r phtgraphed lking straight ahead, even peple viewing the prtrait frm an angle will feel they are being lked at. As lng as the angle f the persn’s gaze is n mre than abut 5 degrees ff t either side, the Mna Lisa effect ccurs.
This is imprtant fr human interactin with n-screen characters. If yu want smene ff t the right side f a rm t feel that a persn n-screen is lking at him r her, yu dn’t cut the gaze f the character t that side-surprisingly, ding s wuld make an bserver feel like the character isn’t lking at anyne in the rm at all. Instead, yu keep the gaze straight ahead.
Hrstmann and his c-authr were studying this effect fr its applicatin in the creatin f artificial-intelligence avatars(虚拟头像) when Hrstmann tk a lng lk at the “Mna Lisa” and realized she wasn’t lking at him.
T make sure it wasn’t just him, the researchers asked 24 peple t view images f the “Mna Lisa” n a cmputer screen. They set a ruler between the viewer and the screen and asked the participants t nte which number n the ruler intersected(和……相交) Mna Lisa’s gaze. T calculate the angle f Mna Lisa’s gaze as she lked at the viewer, they mved the ruler farther frm r clser t the screen during the study. Cnsistently, the researchers fund, participants judged that the wman in the “Mna Lisa” prtrait was nt lking straight at them, but slightly ff t their right.
S why d peple repeat the belief that her eyes seem t fllw the viewer? Hrstmann isn’t sure. It’s pssible, he said, that peple have the desire t be lked at, s they think the wman is lking straight at them. Or maybe the peple wh first cined the term “Mna Lisa effect” just thught it was a cl name.
8. It is generally believed that the wman in the painting “Mna Lisa”___________.
A. attracts the viewers t lk back
B. seems mysterius because f her eyes
C. fixes her eyes n the back f the viewers
D. lks at the viewers wherever they stand
9. What gaze range in a painting will cause the Mna Lisa effect?
A. B.
C. D.
10. The experiment invlving 24 peple was cnducted t______.
A. cnfirm Hrstmann’s belief
B. create artificial-intelligence avatars
C. calculate the angle f Mna Lisa’s gaze
D. explain hw the Mna Lisa effect can be applied
11. What can we learn frm the passage?
A. Hrstmann thinks it’s cl t cin the term “Mna Lisa effect”.
B. The Mna Lisa effect cntributes t the creatin f artificial intelligence.
C. Feeling being gazed at by Mna Lisa may be caused by the desire fr attentin.
D. The psitin f the ruler in the experiment will influence the viewers’ judgement.

Despite the cnvenience brught by the scial netwrk, the issue f cyberbully has becme s widespread that many individuals nw hesitate t engage in nline interactins. By next year, a significant prtin f nline cmmunicatin will invlve sme frm f harassment (骚扰). We are finally acknwledging the gravity f this issue by supprting and develping a variety f initiatives, platfrms, and strategies aimed at preventing cyberbullies frm causing harm.
Unfrtunately, ur effrts might be insufficient and t late. By the time these “slutins” becme widely accessible, cyberbullies will have adpted mre cmplex strategies. In the near future, it wn’t just be the messages yu see n yur screen that will be questinable. Sn yu will als dubt the authenticity f the prfiles yu encunter. This is due t the spreading f advanced identity manipulatin (操纵) and autmatin technlgies that are becming increasingly accessible.
These advancements are likely t fuel ur current struggles with cyberbully. The reasn cyberbully is s harmful is nt just its frequency but als its persnal nature. A decade f scial media use has resulted in a situatin where cyberbullies can easily access persnal details and use them harmfully. Armed with this infrmatin, they can carry ut targeted campaigns t harassment individuals. Fr instance, a cyberbully culd create a fake prfile that appears t be a friend and send messages that seem supprtive, tricking victims int revealing persnal infrmatin r engaging in harmful behavir. Since cyberbullies seek pwer, vulnerable (易受攻击的) individuals, especially children, will be the mst severely affected. Much f nline interactin is based n trust and mutual respect. Identity manipulatin technlgies may erde this fundatin gradually.
We need t address the vulnerability f ur nline cmmunities. Scial media platfrms and users must cperate t establish methds fr cnfirming and cmmunicating authenticity. This culd invlve develping a standardized system t authenticate user prfiles, indicating their reliability and rigins, r transitining away frm text-based cmmunicatin and twards vide-based interactins—using platfrms that can be linked t cnfirmed identities.
Trust is hard t build but easy t destry, and the challenge f maintaining a safe nline envirnment is nly ging t intensify.
12. What’s the authr’s attitude twards ur respnse t cyberbully?
A. Panicked.B. Cnfused.C. Embarrassed.D. Disappinted.
13. What des the underlined wrd “erde” prbably mean in Paragraph 3?
A. Damage.B. Strengthen.C. Preserve.D. Restre.
14. What can we infer frm the text?
A. Hnesty is the best plicy.B. Technlgies can be duble-edged.
C. There are mre slutins than prblems.D. Face t face cmmunicatin is key t trust.
15. Which f the fllwing wuld be the best title fr the text?
A. The Unknwn Pwer behind Cyberbully
B. Hw Cyberbully Is Affecting Technlgy
C. Where the Prblem f Cyberbully Is Rted
D. The Increasingly Severe Threat f Cyberbully
