The disease in questin is Leber Hereditary Optic Neurpathy (LHON)(遗传性视神经病变) .A defective gene leads t sudden and rapid lss f sight, with many sufferers becming legally blind within a year. It affects between ne in 30,000 and ne in 50,000 peple. Men in their 20s and 30s are particularly at high risk. Since mst cases are caused by a mutatin (突变) in a single gene, LHON is a gd candidate fr gene therapy, a frm f genetic engineering which aims t replace the defective gene with a wrking ne.
With that in mind. Dr Yu-Wai-Man and his clleagues laded up a changed virus with a crrected cpy f the gene and injected it int their patients' eyes. The researchers cntrlled the experiment by injecting nly ne f each patient's eyes--chsen at randm--with the virus. The ther eye was given a fake injectin. Using tw eyes in the same patient makes fr a perfect cntrl.
The surprise came several mnths later. The researchers had hped t see a big imprvement in the treated eyes, cmpared with the untreated nes. They did nt, fr which the study failed in its primary bjective. Instead, in mre than three quarters f their patients, they saw significant imprvements in bth eyes.
On the face f it, that was dd. Only ne eye had received the treatment, after all. Fllw-up studies in mnkeys cnfirmed what the researchers had suspected. The virus, it seemed, had fund a way t travel frm ne eye t the ther, prbably via the ptic nerve. Tissues and fluids samples frm mnkeys given the same treatment as the human patients shwed viral DNA in bth eyes, nt just ne.
Althugh it had a happy utcme in this case, the prspect f a gene-therapy virus travelling t places it is nt intended t g t might wrry regulatrs. Frtunately, the researchers fund n trace f the virus elsewhere in the mnkeys’ bdies. And. thugh the study was technically a failure, its practical success means that an effective treatment fr LHON may at last be in reach.
      27. LHON is chsen in this study because it________
      A. can be easily cured
      B. affects yung males mstly
      C. is a cmmn disease amng peple
      D. results frm a mutatin in a single gene
      28. Why was the study a great success despite a failure fficially?
      A. Sme participants suffered lss f sight
      B. The visin f bth eyes imprved greatly
      C. All the participants gave psitive feedback
      D. The virus didn’t replace the damaged gene
      29. The experiment n mnkeys is mentined in rder t________
      A. cnfirm the virus travels acrss eyes
      B. prve the virus can affect ther bdy parts
      C. shw the effect f the treatment n animals
      D. highlight regulatrs' wrry abut gene-therapy
30 Which is the best title fr the passage?

      【分析】本文是一篇说明文。本文主要通过一系列研究,发现了一种新的治疗失明的基因疗法。
      【27题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段“Since mst cases are caused by a mutatin (突变) in a single gene, LHON is a gd candidate fr gene therapy, a frm f genetic engineering which aims t replace the defective gene with a wrking ne.(由于大多数病例是由单个基因的突变引起的,LHON是基因治疗的一个很好的候选者,基因治疗是一种基因工程,目的是用一个有效的基因取代有缺陷的基因。)”可知,之所以选择LHON,是因为它是由单个基因突变产生的。故选D。
      【28题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段“Instead, in mre than three quarters f their patients, they saw significant imprvements in bth eyes.(相反,超过四分之三的患者的双眼都有了明显的改善。)”可知,这项研究在正式失败的情况下却取得了巨大的成功是因为患者双眼的视力有了很大的改善。故选B。
      【29题详解】

      【30题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段“A grup f researchers led by Patrick Yu-Wai-Man,an phthalmlgist (眼科医师) at Cambridge University, investigated a new genetic therapy fr a frm f blindness.(由剑桥大学眼科医生Patrick Yu-Wai-Man领导的一个研究小组,研究了一种新的治疗失明的基因疗法。)”最以及后一段“And thugh the study was technically a failure, its practical success means that an effective treatment fr LHON may at last be in reach.(虽然这项研究在技术上是失败的,但它在实践上的成功意味着对LHON的有效治疗可能终于要实现了。)”及全文可知,本文主要通过一系列研究,发现了一种新的治疗失明的基因疗法,全文主要是讲述用这一方法的求证过程。所以短文的最佳标题为“基因疗法:眼球对眼球”。故选C。

The capacity fr empathy — t first identify and then understand and share in smene else’s feelings — is largely held as a virtue. Yet, there is a knwledge prblem that makes being naturally empathetic a struggle. Why? As pet Jhn Keats put it, “Nthing ever becmes real until it is experienced.”

In ther wrds, reading fictin lights up the brain in ways that cpy the neural (神经) activities f the experience yu’re reading abut. Fr example, if yu read a well-written passage abut a character hiking thrugh the wilderness, yur brain reacts as if yu’re n that hike.
T really cultivate empathy, yu need t be internally mre aware f and cnnected t thse arund yu. And again, reading fictin is assciated with just such a skill. One study, which assesses ne’s ability t determine smene else’s emtins based n their facial expressin alne, shwed that fictin readers scred higher than nn-readers and readers f nnfictin. The researchers assumed that reading fictin allws peple t practice taking n smene else’s perspective and thus imprves their scial awareness. This suggests that reading fictin imprves ne’s thery f mind and emtinal intelligence.
The takeaway lessn is simple: If yu want t build empathy, try reading mre fictin, mre ften — especially fictin by and abut peple whse experiences are different frm yur wn.
