My birth was a little mre dramatic than the standard way a baby enters the wrld. I was brn missing my left hand. Indeed, my limb (手臂) difference culd have been a disaster if it hadn’t been fr what happened next. A nurse placed me in my mther’s arms and instructed, “Yu will take her hme. Yu will lve her and treat her as nrmal.”
That is exactly what happened. I played sprts, acted in theater, excelled in schl and had playdates with friends. While I did get sme stares and “plite” questins abut my disability, I was lucky because I wasn’t made fun f fr it.
Hwever, that fact that I was different hit me bard my first day f high schl, I was 13, an age when kids are already very self-cnscius and the need t fit in is intensified, I remember ne f the ther kids n the schl bus stared just a little t lng at my left arm. I felt a sudden urge t hide my hand, s I slipped it int my pcket. I tld myself that I’d just hide it that ne day, while I was trying t make friends. But ne day f hiding turned int a week, a mnth, and years — 25 f them t be exact.
When I was 38 years ld, tired f hiding and lnely, I met smene special and invited him in. The cmbinatin f me finally feeling ready t unhide and his willingness t g thrugh the unhiding prcess with me was exactly what I needed. Fr the first time in my life, I allwed smene t really hld my limb, lk at it, tuch it, lve it — lve me. I saw my limb difference as smething unique abut me, smething that shuld be shwn, nt hidden.
It was a transfrmatinal experience, and I learned t lve me t. It changed hw I lived my entire life and made me happier. I als discvered and jined the Lucky Fin Prject, an rganizatin devted t peple with all types f disabilities.
Hiding things, especially frm lved nes, is tiring and lnely, and it prevents us frm getting help and supprt. It’s time t change that.
24. What was the authr’s childhd like?

Wmen were less likely than men t supprt the Vietnam war, the Gulf war, r the invasins f Afghanistan and Irag. They cmmit far fewer murders. They are less likely t favr strikes. Fr sme schlars, these are grunds(理由) fr thinking that a wrld run by wmen wuld be mre peaceful.
But Eurpean histry suggests therwise, accrding t plitical scientists Oeindrila Dube and S. P. Harish. They studied hw ften Eurpean rulers went t war between 1480 and 1913, and fund that states ruled by queens were 27% mre likely t get invlved in wars than thse ruled by kings.
This was nt all the queens’ fault: men, seeing them as sft targets, tended t attack them. Frederick the Great f Prussia nce declared: “N wman shuld ever be allwed t gvern anything.” Shrtly after becming king, be attacked the newly crwned(加冕) Archduchess f Austria, Maria Theresa, and seized Silesia prvince. Despite years f war, she never recvered it.
But perceived weakness is nt the whle stry. Queens, the researchers fund, were mre likely t gain new territry. Catherine the Great expanded her empire by sme 200,000 square miles. And married queens were mre aggressive than single queens r kings, whether single r married.
The authrs suggest several reasns fr this. First, married queens may have been able t frm mre military alliances (联盟), making them cnfident enugh t pick fights. Their husbands had ften served in the army befre they married, and were well placed (很有条件) t strengthen military ties between their hmelands and their wives’ states.
Secnd, unlike mst kings, queens ften gave their husbands a lt f pwer, putting them in charge f freign plicy r the ecnmy. During the 1740s, Maria Theresa’s husband, Francis I, refrmed the Austrian ecnmy and raised mney fr the armed frces while his wife ruled much f central Eurpe. Prince Albert was Queen Victria’s mst trusted adviser, shaping her freign plicy until his death in1861. This divisin f labr, the authrs suggest, freed up time fr queens t pursue mre aggressive plicies.
The mdern era, t, has witnessed female leaders in wars: Glda Meir and the Ym Kippur war, r Margaret Thatcher and the Falklands. The number f cuntries led by wmen has mre than dubled since 2000, but there is plenty f rm fr imprvement: the current level f 15 represents less than 10 % f the ttal. A wrld in which mre wmen tk pwer might be mre equal. Whether it wuld be mre peaceful is a different questin.
28. The underlined “perceived weakness” in paragraph 4 refers t ________.
A. wmen were less likely t supprt wars
B. wmen culd nt recver lst territry
C. wmen cmmit far fewer crimes
D. wmen were sft targets
29. Why were married queens mre likely t gain new territry?
A. Because their military alliances picked fights fr them.
B. Because they were ambitius and aggressive by nature.
C. Because their husbands were supprtive in state gverning.
D. Because they centralized all pwer int their wn hands.
30. What is the purpse f mentining the tw female leaders in the last paragraph?
A. T imply there is rm fr imprvement in gender equality.
B. T indicate mre females becme leaders in mdern times.
C. T illustrate female leaders cannt prevent wars in mdern times.
D. T suggest female leaders have their share f wars in mdem times.
31. Accrding t the passage, we can safely cnclude that _________.
A. married wmen are nt fit t gvern their states n their wn
B. female leaders shuld be respnsible fr all wars thrughut histry
C. the wrld wuldn’t be mre peaceful even if mre wmen tk pwer
D. the divisin f labr allws queens t survive ecnmic crisis
D
Thugh the spread f gd reprductin f wrks f art can be culturally valuable, museums cntinue t prmte the special status f riginal wrk and highlight the authenticity f its exhibits. Unfrtunately, this seems t place severe limitatins n the kind f experience ffered t visitrs.
One limitatin is the way the museum presents its exhibits. Art museums are called “treasure huses”. We are reminded f this befre we view a cllectin by the presence f security guards wh keep us away frm the exhibits. In additin, a majr cllectin like that f Lndn’s Natinal Gallery is hused in numerus rms, where a single piece f wrk is likely t be wrth mre than all the average visitr pssesses. In a sciety that judges the persnal status f the individual s much by their material wrth, it is difficult nt t be impressed by ne’s wn relative “wrthlessness” in such an envirnment.
Furthermre, cnsideratin f the “value” f the riginal wrk impresses the viewer that since these wrks were riginally prduced, they have been assigned a huge value in terms f mney by sme persn mre pwerful than themselves. Evidently, nthing the viewer thinks abut the wrk is ging t alter that value, and s tday’s viewer is discuraged frm trying t extend that immediate and self-reliant kind f interpretatin which wuld riginally have met the wrk.
The visitr may then be struck by the strangeness f seeing such a variety f paintings, drawings and sculptures brught tgether in an envirnment fr which they were nt riginally created. This “displacement effect” is further heightened by the huge vlume f exhibits. In the case f a majr cllectin, there are prbably mre wrks n display than we culd realistically view in weeks r even mnths.
This is particularly distressing because time seems t be a vital factr in the appreciatin f all art frms. A fundamental difference between painting and ther art frms is that there is n prescribed time ver which a painting is viewed. Operas, nvels and pems are read in a prescribed time sequence, whereas a picture has n clear place at which t start viewing, r at which t finish. Thus art wrks themselves encurage us t view them superficially withut appreciating the richness f detail and labr that is invlved.
Cnsequently, the dminant critical apprach becmes that f the art histrian, a specialized academic apprach devted t “discvering the meaning” f art within the cultural cntext f its time. This is in harmny with the museum’s functin, since the apprach is dedicated t seeking ut and cnserving “authentic”, “riginal” readings f the exhibits.
32. The writer mentins Lndn’s Natinal Gallery t illustrate ________.
A. the undesirable cst t a natin f maintaining a huge cllectin f art
B. the negative effect a museum can have n visitrs’ pinin f themselves
C. the cnflict that may arise in sciety between financial and artistic values
D. the need t put individual well-being abve large-scale artistic schemes
33. The writer says that tday viewers may be unwilling t criticize a wrk because they ________.
A. lack the knwledge needed
B. feel their persnal reactin is f n significance
C. have n real cncept f the wrk’s value
D. fear it may have financial implicatins
34. Which f the fllwing might be the best title f the passage?
A. Original wrk: reductin t value f art wrks
B. Original wrk: art histrians’ bread and butter
C. Original wrk: substitute fr reprductin
D. Original wrk: killer f artistic appreciatin

36 Playing sprts als cntributes t mental health, helping t increase cnfidence and self-wrth. A pat n the back, a high five frm a teammate, r a handshake after a match really bsts a child’s cnfidence. Wrds f praise and encuragement frm the cach, parents and ther players raise self-wrth. 37 S after a game, it’s a better idea t ask “Did yu enjy the game?” rather than “Did yu win?”

In a grwing number f schl districts acrss America, students must wear a unifrm. Accrding t the US Department f Educatin, wearing a unifrm can maintain discipline and help schls recgnize thse wh cme t the schl illegally. Schls claim that when students cme in unifrm, it imprves discipline and leads t academic gains. Hwever, students prtested the decisin.
A mre imprtant questin is whether there is any evidence t shw that mandatry (强制的) unifrm plicies can lead t imprved student utcmes. A 2003 study that used a large natinal data set cncluded that elementary and middle schls with schl unifrms had fewer student behavir prblems. But it fund that high schls bad a greater frequency f misbehavir.
Interestingly, even when evidence is available, educatrs culd take the ppsite view. Fr example, a study f educatrs in 38 Nrth Carlina high schls fund that 61% f the schl masters believed that there was a reductin in cases f misbehavir n campus when schl unifrms were intrduced. In reality, the data shwed n change in incidents f suspensins (停学) and ther prblems.
Similarly, research n the effectiveness f schl unifrms n increasing student attendance and achievement is cnfusing. Fr example, ne study cncluded that schl unifrms resulted in increased student achievement and increased attendance. Hwever, anther study fund little impact n academics at all levels and little evidence f imprvement in attendance fr girls and drp in attendance fr bys. S, what des lack f cnsistent research mean fr plicy?
In my view, it des nt mean that schls shuld nt carry ut such plicies. It des mean, hwever, that educatrs must be clear abut the gals that they hpe t achieve. Decreased discipline prblems, increased attendance and academic achievement may nt be achieved just by wearing unifrms. But there may be ther benefits, fr instance, it culd help a schl prmte its brand thrugh a unifrm lk. Schl unifrms may als serve as a symbl f cmmitment t academic achievement.
40. Why are students required t wear schl unifrms in America?
______________________________________________________________________________________41. What are the findings f the 2003 study?
______________________________________________________________________________________42. Please decide which part is false in the fllwing statement, then underline it and explain why.
⮚Sme studies shwed wearing schl unifrms helped imprve students’ perfrmance, but ther studies fund n cnsistent results, s schls shuld stp the schl unifrm plicy.

43. What d yu think f wearing schl unifrms? Explain yur reasns. (In abut 40 wrds)

1 B根据前文“I had a mild stutter (结巴).”
“While”是“当……
从句中yur prfile picture says缺少宾语,因此用what引导从句,相当于the things that。
14 when。
16 explaining。
18 have dressed 根据时间状语ver the last few mnths判断用现在完成时,主语caretakers为复数,故填have dressed,强调过去动作对现在的影响。
19 with 固定搭配interactins with表示与……
A
21. C 根据原文“Schedule and Time Cmmitment”部分,志愿者需在季节内至少服务8天,每天6小时(10:00 a.m.
22. C 原文强调“良好的口头沟通能力”(very gd ral cmmunicatin skills)和“体能要求”(stand, walk, hike, tlerate weather, carry 15 punds)。
A nurse placed me in my mther’s arms and instructed, “Yu will take her hme. Yu will lve her and treat her as nrmal.” That is exactly what happened. I played sprts, acted in theater, excelled in schl and had playdates with friends. While I did get sme stares and “plite” questins abut my disability, I was lucky because I wasn’t made fun f fr it.
I was 13, an age when kids are already very self-cnscius and the need t fit in is intensified. I remember ne f the ther kids n the schl bus stared just a little t lng at my left arm. I felt a sudden urge t hide my hand, s I slipped it int my pcket.
26. C根据文中第五段“It was a transfrmatinal experience, and I learned t lve me t. It changed hw I lived my entire life and made me happier”可知,当她不再隐藏自己的差异时,她开始敞开心扉接受自己,变得更加快乐,故选C。
This was nt all the queens’ fault: men, seeing them as sft targets, tended t attack them.
The authrs suggest several reasns fr this. First, married queens may have been able t frm mre military alliances(联盟),making them cnfident enugh t pick fights. Their husbands had ften served in the army befre they married, and were well placed t strengthen military ties between their hmelands and their wives’ states.(作者提出了几个原因。
The mdern era, t, has witnessed female leaders in wars: Glda Meir and the Ym Kippur war, r Margaret Thatcher and the Falklands.
A wrld in which mre wmen tk pwer might be mre equal. Whether it wuld be mre peaceful is a different questin.(一个有更多女性掌权的世界可能会更加平等。
In additin, a majr cllectin like that f Lndn’s Natinal Gallery is hused in numerus rms, where a single piece f wrk is likely t be wrth mre than all the average visitr pssesses. In a sciety that judges the persnal status f the individual s much by their material wrth, it is difficult nt t be impressed by ne’s wn relative “wrthlessness” in such an envirnment.(此外,像伦敦国家美术馆那样的大型藏品被安置在许多房间里,在那里,一件作品的价值可能比普通游客拥有的所有物品都要高。
Evidently, nthing the viewer thinks abut the wrk is ging t alter that value, and s tday’s viewer is discuraged frm trying t extend that immediate and self-reliant kind f interpretatin which wuld riginally have met the wrk.(显然,观众对作品的任何想法都不会改变它的价值,所以今天的观众不愿意尝试扩展那种直接的、自主的解读,而这种解读本来是可以与作品相遇的。)
Unfrtunately, this seems t place severe limitatins n the kind f experience ffered t visitrs.(不幸的是,这似乎严重限制了提供给游客的体验。)
35. E根据空后的例证Basketball players fcus n strength training; ftball players wrk n speed while track athletes train thrugh lnger runs. 36. 根据后句Playing sprts als cntributes t mental health, helping t increase cnfidence and self-wrth. A项It’s nt just yur bdy that benefits frm sprts. 故选A。
Wrds f praise and encuragement frm the cach, parents and ther players raise self-wrth. But remember, a child’s self-wrth shuld nt be distinguished by victry r lss.
Children wh participate in sprts might als benefit frm the scial aspect, feeling part f a grup, building up respnsibility and leadership. Teamwrk invlves bth being dependable as a teammate and learning t rely n yur teammates t achieve a psitive utcme. Amng these, learning hw t functin as part f a team is the mst imprtant advantage.
Discipline is anther scial advantage. Mst rganized sprts require a strict training and practice schedule. As a student-athlete, yu need t balance studies and athletics. Only with strict discipline can yu be successful bth in the classrm and in the sprts field.
