My head was s full f digital nise that it felt like my brain was abut t blw a fuse (导火线). I had n greater pwer f cncentratin than the lifeless stare f a gldfish. As a writer, I was ashamed t admit that my lve f bks had been vitiated by a brain that simply culd nt sit still.
S, this year I cmmitted myself t restring bks t the place that they held in my life befre the Internet brke my brain.
My gal was 52 bks: It seemed like an impssible task. A 400-page bk will take the average persn arund eight hurs t read. Finding the time t read was a challenge but here’s hw I did it. I started with treating my mind like a misbehaving child, wh needs sme discipline. Then I decided that I wuld read fr an hur r tw at a time withut distractin each day.
In The Distracted Mind, Larry Rsen says that the mre we practice spending time away frm ur electrnic devices, the calmer and mre fcused we becme. And this is what I fund. Again and again, I wuld gently bring myself back t the page, resisting the urge t reach fr that screen, an experience that eches Nikki Gemmell, wh describes in On Quiet, hw investing in a safe t lck away her family’s devices fr lng perids had pened up a space fr deep reflectin. Fr me, finding that quiet time meant finding time in my day just t read. It was like a date between me and my bk. And it meant actively chsing t read at times when I nrmally wuld reach fr my phne.
By reawakening my lve with bks, I created a sacred space where I culd press pause and fund inspiratin, knwledge, reflectin and escape. In ur mdern wrld, reading is a pwerful and beneficial way fr us t slw dwn and be urselves.
24. What des the underlined wrd “vitiated” mean in Paragraph 1?

In recent years, the sharp increase in glbal rcket launches has transfrmed the sky, fueled by the rapid grwth f the space industry. This creates majr pprtunities but als raises envirnmental challenges. Pllutants released during rcket launches and re-entry are left in the middle atmsphere, where they can damage the zne layer (臭氧层).
Investigatins int hw rcket emissins (排放) affect zne began mre than three decades ag, but fr many years the impact was cnsidered minimal. As the frequency f launches cntinues t rise, this view is shifting. In 2019, nly 97 rbital launches were recrded wrldwide, but by 2024, the figure had climbed t 258, with prjectins pinting t cntinued rapid grwth.
Unlike grund-level pllutants, emissins frm rckets and re-entering satellites can stay in the middle and upper atmsphere up t 100 times lnger, since remval prcesses such as precipitatin (降雨) d nt ccur at thse heights. While mst launches take place in the Nrthern Hemisphere, the atmspheric flw eventually distributes the pllutants glbally.
Recently, researchers frm ETH Zurich and the Physical Meterlgical Observatry in Davs, in cperatin with Laura Revell’s internatinal team at the University f Canterbury, used a chemistry-climate mdel t see hw future emissins might impact the zne layer by 2030.
With 2,040 annual launches by 2030—rughly eight times the 2024 ttal—the mdel predicts that glbal average zne thickness wuld decrease by nearly 0.3%. Seasnal lsses culd reach as much as 4% ver Antarctica, where the zne hle cntinues t reappear each spring.
While these reductins may appear small, the cntext is critical. The zne layer is still recvering frm the earlier lss caused by lng-lived chlrflurcarbns(CFCs), which were banned under the 1989 Mntreal Prtcl. Even tday, glbal zne thickness remains abut 2% belw pre-industrial levels, and the full recvery is nt expected until arund 2066.
But we believe a launch industry that avids zne-damaging effects is entirely pssible: Mnitring rcket emissins and carrying ut necessary and apprpriate regulatins are all key t ensuring that the zne layer cntinues its recvery. This requires scientists, plicymakers, and industry t wrk tgether.
28. What is the current view n rcket emissins?
A. Their impact will becme severe. B. Their distributin is lcatin-limited.
C. They will decrease at a faster speed. D. They can be remved by precipitatin.
29. Why was the recent research n rcket emissins cnducted?
A. T seek ptential slutins. B. T address climate change challenges.
C. T lk int their future effect. D. T figure ut the leading cntributrs.
30. What is the functin f paragraph 6?
A. T shw prtecting the zne layer is pssible.
B. T indicate the dark future f the space industry.
C. T argue that the mdel predictins are wrrying.
D. T set standards fr glbal average zne thickness.
31. What can be a suitable title fr the text?
A. Glbal Rcket Launches Are Rcketing
B. Can the Ozne Layer Still Prtect Earth?
C. Can Ozne-damaging Effects Be Avided?
D. Rckets Culd Eat Away at the Ozne Layer

Fr centuries, we’ve pursued happiness and meaning. But what des that leave ut? As a scial psychlgist, I have dedicated my research career t a simple, but universal questin: what makes fr a gd life, and hw can we achieve it?
Fr much f human histry, we have been presented with tw pssibilities: pursuing a life f happiness, r a life f meaning. Each f these paths has its benefits, but decades f psychlgical research have als revealed their limits.
Ask the Danes and Finns, wh cnsistently rank amng the happiest peple in the wrld, what their secret is and they’ll tell yu this: lwer yur expectatins and be cntent with what yu have. It sunds gd, desn’t it? But it leaves smething ut. It’s a bit like being a cllege student wh nly takes easy curses t be sure f getting gd grades. Might there be mre t life than simple pleasures and czy cmfrt?
Then there’s the meaningful life. We ften imagine that meaning flws frm trying t change the wrld like Steve Jbs. Once again, the research shws that lwering yur sights and fcusing n the little things can ffer a mre achievable sense f meaning. Often peple find it in rutines like taking care f family, r vlunteering in the cmmunity. But there is als a dark side t the pursuit f meaning: researchers have fund that it can encurage peple t draw sharp lines between thse wh belng in their grup and thse wh dn’t.
My research lab mapped ut a third rute t fulfillment: psychlgical richness. A psychlgically rich life is ne filled with diverse, unusual and interesting experiences that change yur perspective; a life with twists and turns; a life that feels like a lng, winding hike rather than many laps f the same racing circuit. Such experiences can make us tugher. Nt nly that, embracing the pursuit f psychlgical richness can make us less likely t regret: it matters less if the thing yu did went wrng.
Perhaps n ne said it better than Eleanr Rsevelt: “The purpse f life, after all, is t live it, t taste experience t the utmst, t reach ut eagerly and withut fear .”
32. What is revealed abut pursuing happiness r meaning?
A. They are valuable but nt cmprehensive.
B. They are sufficient fr achieving persnal fulfillment.
C. They are mainly prmted by specific cultural grups.
D. They are fully supprted by decades f psychlgical research.
33. What prblem may arise when peple fcus n meaningful rutines?
A. T much pressure. B. Harm t family bnds.
C. Lwer persnal jy. D. Less care fr ther grups.
34. Which persn is living a psychlgically rich life described by the authr?
A. A student wh nly chses easy curses t get gd grades.
B. A graduate explring the wrld thrugh varied experiences.
C. A vlunteer finding meaning in a fixed weekly rutine.
D. A persn achieving happiness by aviding risks.
35. Hw des the authr develp the argument in the passage?
A. By using persnal stries t shw hw an idea changes.
B. By describing three different life philsphies neutrally.
C. By shwing statistics t rank hw satisfied peple are with life.
D. By evaluating the limitatins f tw paths befre ffering an alternative.

It was a typical busy nn at the dwntwn fast-fd spt. The smell f sizzling patties and crispy fries lingered (弥漫) in the air, and the place was packed with flks rushing t grab a quick meal. As I set the tray (托盘) dwn n a small table by the windw, I glanced ver and saw tw firefighters in the crner. Their unifrms were heavy with faint spts, like they’d just stepped away frm a smky scene, and their bts still held a hint f damp frm the mrning dew. They std in the back f the line, shulders relaxed but eyes tired.
I was just abut t pick up my burger—the cheese melted perfectly when a lud, sharp siren (警报) cut thrugh the nise f the restaurant. The tw firefighters frze fr half a secnd, and then mved. N hesitatin, n exchange f wrds—just muscle memry. One grabbed his helmet ff the nearby cunter, the ther adjusted his radi n his shulder, and they turned tward the dr, their steps quickening. My empty stmach served as a quiet reminder f hw lng I’d waited fr this meal. I’d std in that line fr 15 minutes, my feet aching frm the mrning’s wrk. Giving them my lunch meant I wuld have t wait again—maybe anther line, maybe my break slipping away faster. I bit my lip, staring at the tray. Then I thught f their unifrms, the spts, the way they’d act upn hearing the siren like it was a call they culdn’t ignre. They didn’t get t pause fr a meal when emergencies hit.
