It’s 12km frm Pelegrinska n the Eastern tip f Hvar Island, acrss a 3km channel f water t and arund the cast f Palmizana island and I’m attempting t swim this distance. I’m taking part in UltraSwim 33.3, an pen-water event that challenges swimmers t cver the distance f an English Channel swim. This may seem an dd way t start an article abut writing. But I’ve lng tld students that writing a nvel is less like a flash f inspiratin and mre like swimming the Channel.
Training fr the UltraSwim meant gradually increasing my distance, strengthening my technique, and adapting t cld water. That is exactly like writing. Just as yu can build physical tirelessness, yu can build creative staying pwer. Fr swimming, that meant cld water adaptability and learning t eat prperly between swims. Fr writing, it means writing even when the wrds feel ff and learning t rewrite what desn’t wrk. Each week I saw my swim times imprve, just as my early drafts began t read less like ntes and mre like chapters.
This isn’t just my thery. Other authrs have fund similar inspiratin in swimming. Even Hemingway was knwn fr his lve f swimming. The pl at his Key West hme was mre than just a luxury; it was a place fr reflectin, writing and escape. He swam elsewhere, t: in Spain, in France, wherever life tk him.
There’s a mment, smewhere twards the end f a lng swim, when yur arms ache and every fibre f yur being wants ut. But yu keep ging and tuch the finish line. And then yu cllapse and say yu will never d that again. The funny thing is, the swimmers were, within minutes f receiving their medals, already talking abut “next year”—abut training mre seriusly and cming back strnger. That’s the part mst nn-writers dn’t understand: finishing the first draft f a nvel isn’t the end. It’s the beginning f editing, rewriting, restructuring. Yu’ve made it t the ther side, but the tide (潮汐) is already pulling yu back fr anther pass.
24. What’s the purpse f the first paragraph?
A. T describe a swimming rute.B. T explain a cmpetitin’s rules.
C. T cnnect tw seemingly different things.D. T shwcase an athletic achievement.
25. In what sense are swimming and writing similar accrding t the text?
A. Adaptability and gradual prgress are key.B. They require sudden bursts f inspiratin.
C. Physical strength is irrelevant t creativity.D. It takes a high level f fcus t d them well.
26. Why des the authr mentin Hemingway’s swimming pl in Key West?
A. T criticize his luxurius lifestyle.
B. T suggest sprty writers can easily succeed.
C. T highlight hw swimming fueled his writing.
D. T cmpare it with mdern swimming facilities.
27. What des the authr say abut finishing the first draft f a nvel?
A. It’s like winning a swimming medal.B. It leads t the next phase f hard wrk.
C. It marks the final step f the writing prcess.D. It’s less imprtant than the initial brainstrming.
C
The numerus bacteria that naturally inhabit the human bdy seem t help us in many ways. One grup is emerging as particularly beneficial: a type f gut (肠道) bacteria knwn as Blautia, which has made headlines recently because it seems t prduce sme really remarkable effects. Nw, a Chinese team is glimpsing anther ptential benefit f Blautia: helping peple adapt t high altitudes. Their findings suggest that prviding Blautia culd help muntaineers and thers perfrm better in these challenging envirnments.
Qing-Peng Kng, a geneticist at the Chinese Academy f Sciences, and his team recruited 45 men t mve frm their hmes at 250 meters abve sea level t a twn at abut 3,700 meters. Despite the thin air, the men ate similar fd as they had at hme, minimizing the effects f diet changes n their gut bacteria. After 2 days, Blautia went frm being rare t very abundant in their guts.
In the secnd experiment, the team expsed mice t cntrlled lw-xygen cnditins in the lab first and then simulated (模拟) an altitude f 4,000 meters, while giving Blautia t half f them every ther day. The Blautia-treated mice shwed milder respnse f altitude sickness. This pens the dr int whether altitude sickness might be amenable t treatment thrugh the gut.
The bacteria’s effect may als extend t the brain. “Its superpwer cmes frm the cnnectin between the gut and the brain,” says Klepac-Cerak at Wellesley Cllege. The fatty acids it makes are knwn t activate receptrs (神经末梢) n nerves that cnnect the digestive system, heart and brain. This culd help explain a surprising relatinship that Klepac-Cerak reprted last year: Kids are mre likely t talk and laugh when they have mre Blautia in their guts. “There’s lts f cmmunicatin happening between ur brains; we are just beginning t uncver what services bacteria d fr us.” Klepac-Cerak ntes.
Blautia’s apparent superpwers suggest t Kng it culd serve as a supplement (补充) that benefits peple regardless f whether they are planning a trip t Tibet. But first, Kng says, he wants t find ut whether Blautia is a “sl” player r has these prtective effects nly as part f a larger grup f bacteria.
28. What’s the newly-fund benefit f the study led by a Chinese team?
A. It gets public attentin.B. It helps peple d better at high altitudes.
C. It makes scial media angry.D. It intrduces an advanced new technlgy.
29. What d we knw abut the subjects (实验对象) in bth experiments?

B. They received Blautia in their diet.
C. They mved t high-altitude regins.
D. They suffered severe altitude sickness.
30. What des the underlined wrd “amenable” in Paragraph 3 mean?”.
A. CarelessB. Untreatable.C. UnchangeableD. Reactive.
31. Hw wuld bth Kng and Klepac-Cerak describe Blautia’s rle in human health?
A. duble-edged swrd.B. A sl player.
C. An extremely effective slutin.D. A partially-understd influence

Fishing is a way f life fr peple wh live n the flating villages f Cambdia’s Tnle Sap Lake. These Sutheast Asians depend n fish in the lake. But thse fish are in truble.
Overall, their numbers in Tnle Sap Lake have been falling sharply. Cmpared t the number in 2003, just 12 percent as many culd be fund in 2019. Dams (大坝) are a big prblem, Chevalier says. These structures break up river systems. With grwing human ppulatins, verfishing becmes mre f a threat. As peple keep fishing, the share f fish left there culd decrease even mre. Pllutin threatens freshwater ecsystems, t. Peple have als been changing the land in ways that damages the habitat in lakes and streams. And then there’s a grwing number f nn-native harmful species. Lastly, glbal warming has been causing harm by stressing bth fish and their fd surces.
Still, the situatin isn’t hpeless. Researchers are wrking t identify the mst effective ways t change that. One way is t remve utdated r ill-placed dams. The largest such U. S. prject tk dwn fur dams frm the lwer Klamath River. Sn after, thusands f salmn (鲑鱼) were swimming upstream thrugh this newly pened stretch. Elsewhere, dam peratrs can reduce harm by changing river flws. Limiting flw t much can cause dwnstream areas t dry up. Smarter dam placement wuld als help.
“Restring habitat can help if dne right. But this wrk csts mney. And it’s hard t restre entire streams,” Jhn Gray, a fish bilgist, says. In 2022, scientists tried reppulating sme fish species at Tnle Sap Lake. Hwever, nearly half the fish were caught less than three mnths later.
With each success r failure, scientists learn hw better t deal with these big prblems. Teens can get invlved. Many cnservatin grups welcme help frm peple f any age.

34. What des Gray think f restring habitat?
A. It has limited benefits.B. It is useless.

35. What is the best title f the text?

Each bell has a unique tne that identifies any individual cw. Over time, it changed, nt just in frm but in significance, integrating itself int Swiss culture. Fr the Swiss, cwbells are symblic f their cnnectin with nature, their deep-rted traditins, and the beauty f the Alps.
There are nly abut six main cwbell makers left in Switzerland. The bells are handmade and can last fr decades. Craftsmanship is highly valued. Fr travellers, Swiss cwbells have becme belved suvenirs.
