Yared Nuguse never dreamed f being a prfessinal runner, let alne an Olympic medalist. His career plans
even invlved becming a dentist(牙医) when he was 14 years ld.
But life has a funny way f taking unlikely turns, ur hidden talents unearthed in places we never expect. Fr a
teenage Nuguse, the idea that he wuld ne day becme a tp middle-distance athlete— and amng the best in the
      wrld— was laughable.
After shwing early prmise as a high schl student in Luisville, Kentucky, Nuguse cmpeted fr the Ntre
Dame Fighting Irish, winning the NCAA title in the 1,500 meters in 2019. Frm there, a career in running called t
him, alng with the fitting label f “America’s accidental champin”.
“It’s been a crazy jurney, ne that I never really saw cming r expected,” says Nuguse. “But it’s ne that I’
m really glad I gave a chance because I wuld be in a cmpletely different space right nw if I hadn’t. Running has
just been changing my life in many amazing ways, and I’ve been really, really happy fr it, and happy that my track
cach in high schl was able t cnvince me.”
Even tday, Nuguse struggles t get his head arund the path his life has taken, still failing t see himself as a
natural runner. He desn’t cnsider himself a sprty persn. But his achievements n the track are testament(证明)
t his enrmus talent and wrk ethic. In ne f the mst eagerly anticipated events f last year’s Paris Olympics,
Nuguse tk brnze(铜牌)in the 1,500 meters, bested by fellw American Cle Hcker and Britain’s Jsh Kerr. It
was a fast final dash fr the ages.
      4. Why did Nuguse cnsider his jurney crazy?
      A. It was full f unexpected changes. B. It tk him a lng time t succeed.
      C. He disliked running at the beginning. D. He suffered a lt f serius injuries.
      5. What is Nuguse’s attitude twards his running career?

One f the mst imprtant medical advances in the 20th century was the discvery f antibitics(抗生素).
      第 4页/共 11页
The first antibitic was intrduced in 1910 and changed mdern medicine significantly. Penicillin was discvered
in 1928, and these medicatins that culd kill bacteria extended peple’s average lifetime by 23 years. Hwever,
antibitic-resistant bacteria have als changed and adapted, and the bacteria are winning.
New research frm Tel Aviv University(TAU) in Israel has fund a way t get the better f bacteria and shut
dwn its defense systems when transferring(转移)DNA.The transfer f DNA frm ne bacterium t anther is
hw these bacteria change and adapt. During this prcess, knwn as cnjugatin(接合), ne bacterial cell attaches
t anther thrugh a small tube, allwing the transfer f genetic material called plasmids(质粒).
Bruria Samuel, a PhD student wrking with Prfessr David Burstein at TAU’s Shmunis Schl f
Bimedicine and Cancer Research, led the study published in Nature. Samuel analyzed 33,000 plasmids and
identified the gene that allwed plasmids t pass by bacterial defense mechanisms when transferring DNA.The
team used plasmids that give antibitic resistance and put them int bacteria with CRISPR, a defense system that
      can target and destry DNA.
The lcatin f anti-defense systems n plasmids determines whether the bacterium can vercme the
CRISPR system r if it will die. Understanding hw this psitining wrks means that antibitic-resistant genes
      culd be blcked effectively.
The research culd help design effective plasmids fr changing natural bacterial ppulatins. Accrding t
Burstein, this may help blck antibitic resistance genes in hspitals, teach bacteria t break dwn pllutants, and
imprve human health thrugh gut bacteria. Additinally, mdified bacteria culd be used in agriculture and fd
technlgy t prtect against fdbrne illness.
      8. Why des the authr mentin the discvery f antibitics in paragraph 1?
      A. T cmpare different medical advances. B. T shw the histry f antibitic research.
      C. T recmmend a way t live a lnger life. D. T intrduce its value and a related challenge.
      9. What d we knw abut cnjugatin?
      A. It helps bacteria destry all the plasmids.
      B. It is a system stpping antibitic resistance.
      C. It enables bacteria t turn plasmids int CRISPR.
      D. It lets bacteria transfer DNA thrugh a small tube.
      10. What did Bruria Samuel d in the study?
      A. He analyzed plasmids t find a gene.
      第 5页/共 11页
B He destryed bacteria with CRISPR.
      C. He cllected data frm previus researches.
      D. He emplyed bacteria t break dwn pllutants.
      11. What can be inferred abut the research?
      A. It nly benefits in hspital settings. B. It aims t reduce bacterial ppulatin.
C It may have brad implicatins. D. It will stp antibitic resistance ttally.

A new study has revealed fr the first time that ancient carbn stred in landscapes fr thusands f years r
mre, can find its way back t the atmsphere as carbn dixide (CO2) released (释放) frm the surfaces f rivers.
Rivers transprt and release CO2 as part f the glbal carbn cycle. Until nw, scientists believed the majrity
f this was a quick turnver riginating frm the recycling f recent plant grwth— rganic material brken dwn
and carried int the river system in the past 70 years r s. Hwever, this new study indicates mre than half—
sme 60%— f emissins (排放) cme frm lng-term carbn stres cllected ver thusands f years ag.
Lead authr Dr Jsh Dean said, “The results tk us by surprise because it turns ut that ld carbn stres are
leaking ut much mre int the atmsphere than previusly thught. We dn’t yet knw hw humans affect this
flw f ancient carbn, but plants must absrb mre carbn frm the atmsphere tday t accunt fr this
      recgnized release f ld carbn.”
The internatinal research team studied mre than 700 river reaches frm 26 different cuntries acrss the
wrld. They tk detailed radicarbn measurements f CO2 frm the rivers. By cmparing the levels f carbn-14
in the target rivers with a standard reference fr mdern atmspheric CO2, the team was able t date the river
      carbn.
C-authr Dr Gemma Cxn said, “Rivers glbally release abut tw billin tnnes f carbn each year,
cmpared t human activity that results in abut 13 billin tnnes f carbn emissins. These river emissins are
significant at a glbal scale, and ver half f these emissins may be cming frm carbn stres we cnsidered
relatively stable (稳定的). This means we need t re-evaluate these crucial parts f the glbal carbn cycle.”
Further building n these findings, the researchers plan t explre hw the age f river carbn emissins
varies acrss rivers the study was nt able t capture, as well as investigating hw the age f these emissins may
      have changed thrugh time.
      12. What can be inferred frm paragraph 2?
      第 6页/共 11页
      A. The glbal carbn cycle is always stable.
      B. It tk decades t cmplete the new study.
      C. River carbn emissins have lng been ignred.
      D. The new study prved the previus belief wrng.
      13. What d Dr Jsh Dean’s wrds imply?
      A. The recgnized ld carbn will be beneficial.
      B. The release f ancient carbn is underestimated.
      C. Plants fail t absrb carbn frm the atmsphere.
D Human activity bsts the flw f ancient carbn.
      14. What is Dr Gemma Cxn’s advice?
      A. Investigating the impact f human activity.
      B. Making full use f lng-term carbn stres.
      C. Paying mre attentin t river carbn emissins.
      D. Ensuring plants’ rle in radicarbn measurements.
      15. What is the best title fr the text?
      A. Rivers Are Releasing Ancient Carbn int Air
      B. Carbn Emissins Are Being Measured Glbally
      C. A New Carbn Cycle Research Methd Is Fund
      D. Plants Help Fight Against Climate Change Greatly
