A few years ag, a chance encunter with traditinal Chinese medicine (TCM) excited my deep interest in this
ancient culture. Greatly fascinated, I decided t pursue a systematic study.
I applied t Yunnan University f Chinese Medicine, and I was verjyed the day I received my admissin
letter. At the beginning, the ancient Chinese classics and cmplex prcesses f herb cllectin, identificatin and
cmbinatin were quite challenging t me. Frtunately, I had the patient guidance f prfessrs and the enthusiastic
      help f classmates t rely n.
I remember when I first started learning acupuncture (针灸), I was ften t hesitant t actually use the needles.
T encurage me, my senir classmates generusly acted as patients, braving the discmfrt t let me practice
acupuncture techniques n their bdies. With their supprt and mtivatin, my acupuncture skills steadily imprved,
and my studies quickly gt n track.
During my learning jurney, the mst memrable experience was my internship ( 实 习 ) at the Yunnan
Prvincial Hspital f Traditinal Chinese Medicine. There, I had the pprtunity t participate directly in patient
care. I lked frward t every Saturday afternn when I culd shadw my teacher. After each patient cnsultatin,
she wuld give me a detailed explanatin: what the patient’s pulse (脉搏) indicated, what it represented in terms f
their cnditins, and the rle f each herb in the prescriptin (处方). This apprach helped shape my diagnstic
thinking and was incredibly beneficial t me. Even thugh this meant she culd never leave wrk n time, she never
cmplained. As an ancient Chinese saying ges, “It’s easier t get a teacher f classics than a teacher f character.”
My every day in China has been filled with challenges and surprises. TCM has taught me nt just the skills t
heal and save lives but hw t view life. I have cme t understand that the pwer f culture lies mre in its ability
t cnnect hearts than in its uniqueness. Peple frm different cultural backgrunds can actually frm strng
      cnnectins.
      4. Which f the fllwing did the authr find difficult when starting studying TCM?
      A. Hw t cllect ancient Chinese classics.
      B. Hw t cmbine different herbs prperly.
      C. Hw t cmmunicate effectively with prfessrs.
      D. Hw t understand the ancient Chinese philsphy.
      第 5 页/共 14 页
      5. Why des the authr mentin the experience f learning acupuncture?
      A T shw the cmplexity f acupuncture.

      D. T stress the dangers f imprper acupuncture techniques.
      6. What des the authr mean by the saying in paragraph 4?
      A. His TCM teacher is highly prfessinal.

      A. Life is precius.
      B. Hard wrk pays ff.
      C. Uniqueness unites, nt divides.
      D. Culture is a bridge, nt a wall.
      C
D yu have a suit r dress in the clset that yu haven’t wrn fr years but are reluctant t get rid f? Maybe
yu say, “I can’t thrw that away because I paid gd mney fr it.” If yu recgnize this in yurself, then yu are
suffering frm cmmitment t the sunk cst fallacy (谬论). It ccurs when we feel that we have invested t much
t quit. This psychlgical trap causes us t stick with a plan even if it n lnger serves us and the csts clearly
      utweigh the benefits.
Arkes and Blumer cnducted a survey shwing that peple are influenced by sunk cst fallacy in their decisins.
Participants imagined spending $100 n a ski trip t Michigan and $50 n Wiscnsin, realizing later they were fr
the same weekend. They were tld Wiscnsin wuld be mre enjyable. When asked which trip t take, 54% chse
Michigan despite the reasnable chice being Wiscnsin, because they had made a greater initial investment.
Sunk cst fallacy takes place when we let emtins clud ur decisins. Once we’ve invested in a chice, we
feel guilt r regret if we dn’t fllw thrugh. We fail t realize that past csts wn’t be recvered. Instead, we base
decisins n past csts, ignring present and future csts and benefits. This may be due t lss aversin (厌恶),
where lsses feel wrse than gains. We avid lsses, making chices based n aviding the “lss” f ur pas t
      第 6 页/共 14 页
investment instead f cnsidering the benefits gained if we dn’t cntinue ur cmmitment.
N ne can deny the fact that we benefit a lt frm perseverance. S ur sciety lves t emphasize perseverance.
Never give up! Dn’t waste. But nly yu knw the right path fr yu. Smetimes walking away is the hardest chice
f all. Yu might realize a path yu’re n is n lnger the right ne r never was. That’s a painful realizatin.
      8. What phenmenn des the authr describe at the beginning f the text?
      A. Peple benefit frm sticking with a plan.
      B. Peple’s cnsumptin view has changed.
      C. Peple refuse t give up the past cmmitment.
      D. Peple’s clthes are becming mre expensive.
      9. Why did mre than half f the participants chse the trip t Michigan in the survey?
      A. T further reduce the lss. B. T appear mre reasnable.
      C. T make a greater investment. D. T enjy mre f themselves.
      10. When des “sunk cst fallacy” ccur?
      A. When we dn’t cntinue ur cmmitment.
      B. When we dn’t fllw thrugh ur chices.
      C. When we stp feeling guilty and regretful all the time.
      D. When we make decisins based n past csts emtinally.
      11. What is the authr’s attitude twards “perseverance”?
      A Favurable. B. Objective. C. Negative. D. Unclear.
      D
When we think abut what makes humans unique, a gd sense f humr is ften high n the list. Laughter and
playful teasing seem like traits nly we pssess. Hwever, recent research suggests that animals — particularly great
apes — may als engage in behavir that resembles humr.
A study led by primatlgist (灵长类动物学家) Isabelle Laumer at the Max Planck Institute reveals fascinating
insights. “We dcumented yung apes deliberately sneaking up t hit adults, then waiting expectantly fr a reactin,”
Laumer explains. “This isn’t randm play — it meets all the criteria f intentinal teasing.” Over 75 hurs f vide
recrdings shwed this behavir mirrrs hw human children jke: repetitive, surprising, and aimed at seeking
respnses. The researchers nted that the apes even paused t watch fr the adult’s reactin, much like a child waiting
t see if their jke landed.
      第 7 页/共 14 页
But humr in animals may nt be limited t apes. Dg wners ften ntice their pets making breathy, snrting
sunds during play, which sme scientists interpret as laughter. In a 2025 study, researchers fund that playing these
sunds t shelter dgs reduced their stress levels. Similarly, dlphins emit jyful sunds during play-fighting,
elephants trumpet excitedly when playing, and sme parrts tease ther animals — like cnfusing dgs with whistle s
      — just fr fun.
Why might animals exhibit humr? In humans, laughter strengthens scial cnnectins and eases tensin.
Scientists argue that playful teasing in apes r “laughter” in dgs culd serve a similar purpse — breaking the ice
and reinfrcing relatinships. Sme researchers believe these behavirs may have evlved (进化) t help animals
manage cmplex scial ranks r reduce cnflict. Hwever, Laumer cautins that mre research is needed t cnfirm
this thery, as bserving humr in animals remains challenging.
While we may never knw if animals understand punchlines, their behavirs hint at humr’s deep evlutinary
rts. As Laumer reflects: “The line between human and animal laughter isn’t as sharp as we thught.”
      12. What did Laumer’s study find abut yung apes?
      A. They enjy teasing thers. B. They ften fight in grups.
      C. They seek adult prtectin. D. They learn frm human kids.
      13. What des the underlined wrd “trumpet” in paragraph 3 mean?
      A. Wag. B. Smile. C. Nd. D. Shut.
      14. Why might animals shw humr?
      A. T imprve scial status. B. T strengthen scial bnds.
      C. T win in cmplex cnflicts. D. T get much mre pleasure.
      15. What can be a suitable title fr the text?
      A. Animal Scial Behavirs B. D Animals Cpy Our Laughs?
      C. Animals Play Tricks T D. Why Animals Understand Humr?
