China’s first Nbel winner in Physics, Yang Chen-Ning, died in Beijing n Oct. 18 at 103. Tsinghua University, where he was a prfessr, called him “immrtal” in its statement.
Widely recgnized as ne f the 20th century’s greatest physicists, Yang made great cntributins t mdern science. Tgether with Tsung-da Lee, Yang was awarded the Nbel Prize in Physics in 1957 fr prpsing the revlutinary (革命性的) cncept f “parity nn-cnservatin in weak interactin”, making them the first Chinese-brn scientists t receive the hnr. With Rbert Mills, he develped the “Yang-Mills gauge thery”—a crnerstne f mdern physics that laid the fundatin fr the Standard Mdel f particle physics, with significance cmparable t Maxwell’s equatins and Einstein’s general thery f relativity.
Brn in Hefei in 1922, Yang studied at China’s Natinal Suthwest Assciated University and Tsinghua, then earned a U. S. PhD in 1948. He wrked at Princetn and New Yrk’s Stny Brk University, funding a theretical physics institute there.
Deeply devted t his hmeland, Yang played a key rle in advancing China’s science and educatin. In 1971, he visited China, which started mre exchanges between Chinese and verseas Chinese schlars. Peple saw him as a pineer wh helped China and the US cmmunicate in academics. He als helped set up a grup called the Cmmittee n Schlarly Cmmunicatin with China, supprting nearly 100 Chinese schlars t study in the US. Many f these schlars later became leaders in China’s science and technlgy. In 1999, Yang came back t China and jined Tsinghua University again. Fr the next 20 years, he wrked hard t train talents, prmte internatinal academic exchanges, and make China’s basic sciences strnger. His wrk left a lng-lasting influence n China’s higher educatin and scientific research.

Chinese researchers have develped a 3D hand-shaped micrrbt measuring abut 40 micrmeters, smaller than the diameter f a human hair, t achieve precise mvements such as the grasping, delivering, and releasing f particles r cells, accrding t a research article published in the Internatinal Jurnal f Extreme Manufacturing.
Micrrbts play an essential rle in early medical checks and accurate treatment, given increasing demands fr better cntrl ver tls in bi-medicine and micrmanipulatin. Micrrbts can d this well, s they help dctrs find patients’ health prblems earlier and prvide treatments that fit each patient.
Hwever, the research says mst micrrbts have a prblem, in which they are currently made f a single material system, with their prductin prcess fcused n a driving mdule as the main structure. This makes it hard fr ne micrrbt t cmbine varius functins, which are necessary fr cmpleting cmplex jbs.
T fix this, researchers frm the Technical Institute f Physics and Chemistry f the Chinese Academy f Sciences (CAS) created this hand-shaped micrrbt. As CAS explained, when using the rbt, researchers first put it in a liquid. When the surrunding pH value changes, the micrrbt’s “palm” unflds r flds like flwer petals — just like yur hand pulls back autmatically when tuching ht water. Guided by a magnetic field, this micrrbt can avid bstacles and target particles r cells. When the liquid turns acidic (酸性的), its “palm” shuts t hld the target tightly. Then the rbt turns and adjusts its directin t take the target t the right place. When the liquid becmes alkaline (碱性的), the “palm” pens again t release the particles r cells.
Researchers say this rbt may sn be used t cntrl cells, carry drugs fr accurate treatment, and even help prtect the envirnment.
28. What can we learn abut the 3D hand-shaped micrrbt?
A. It has a wide range f applicatins in industry.
B. It has a diameter equal t that f a human hair.
C. It can perfrm precise actins like grabbing cells.
D. It was first reprted in a Chinese scientific jurnal.
29. Why can’t mst current micrrbts finish cmplex tasks?
A. They are made f sme cmplex materials.
B. They can’t wrk in the liquid envirnments.
C. Their prductin prcess veremphasizes the driving mdule.
D. Their single-material design limits them t a single functin.
30. What can we infer abut the “palm” f the micrrbt?
A. Its mvement is related t the liquid’s pH.
B. It has the same sftness as a human hand.
C. It can nly functin prperly in acidic liquid.
D. It requires a magnetic field t pen and clse fully.
31. Which f the fllwing is the mst suitable title fr the passage?
A. The Histry f Micrrbt Research in China
B. Differences Between Old and New Micrrbts
C. A New Micrrbt fr Medical and Envirnmental Uses
D. A New Hand-Shaped Micrrbt by Chinese Researchers

Frm an airplane, cars crawling dwn the highway lk like ants. But actual ants — unlike cars — can avid the stp-and-g traffic. On a driveway with 15 vehicles per mile, ne driver tapping their brakes can cause a persistent traffic jam. Researchers are nw studying these insects’ cperative strategies t learn hw t prgram self-driving cars that dn’t jam up.
Previus research had shwn that ants can maintain their flw even at high densities. S what’s their secret? In a recent study published in Transprtatin Research, researchers recrded ants n trails and used traffic-engineering mdels t analyze their mvement. They fund that the ants dn’t jam because they travel in grups f 3 t 20 that mve at nearly cnstant rates while keeping gd distances between ne anther, and they dn’t speed up t pass thers.
Human drivers at rush hur hardly tend t fllw such rules. “We’re maximizing the interests f individuals. That is why, at a given pint, yu start t have a traffic jam,” says study c-authr Nicla Pugn. In his visin f this future, autnmus vehicles wuld avid traffic jams by priritizing cnstant speeds and headways r by nt passing thers n the rad.
Like ants n a trail, which use scent (气味) t cntrl behavir while interacting with ne anther, the autnmus vehicle netwrk wuld help cars keep cnstant speeds while cllecting and sharing infrmatin. “There is n leader,” but this rganizatin emerges anyway, says Na Pinter-Wllman. And in bth ant and vehicle traffic, this type f distributed system can be very strng and changeable.
Still, ants can d a lt f things that cars can’t, the researcher pints ut. Ants can make trails as wide as they like, unlike drivers stuck n highways. Plus, unlike cars, ants dn’t crash; they can literally walk ver ne anther. Tday’s drivers can learn at least ne thing frm ants t avid causing a traffic jam: by leaving rm between their car and the ne ahead f them, drivers can absrb a wave f braking in dense traffic cnditins that wuld therwise give rise t a traffic jam with n bvius cause.
32. What’s a key factr helping ants maintain their flw at high densities?
A. Fllwing a clear leader.
B. Waiting in queues patiently.
C. Mving at a cnstant speed.
D. Switching trails when crwded.
33. Which f the fllwing matches Nicla Pugn’s pinin?
A. Autnmus vehicles may be designed t imprve traffic situatin.
B. Human drivers ften break the traffic rules during rush hurs.
C. Human drivers will drive mre slwly than autnmus vehicles.
D. Priritizing interests can definitely lead t inefficient traffic flw.
34. What can we knw abut the autnmus vehicle netwrk?
A. It can help vehicles cllect and share infrmatin.
B. It can use scent t cmmunicate with vehicles.
C. It can ffer drivers flexible rute chices.
D. It can frm a slid and flexible traffic system.
35. What is the main idea f the passage?
A. Hw d ants deal with traffic jams they encunter?
B. Hw ants may save yu frm future traffic jams?
C. What benefits can we get frm autnmus vehicles?
D. Why shuld we keep gd distances while driving?
