Des using an ec-friendly paper straw (吸管) give yu a gd feeling because yu’re ding smething fr the envirnment? “Straws made frm plant-based materials, such as paper and bamb, are ften advertised as being mre sustainable and ec-friendly than thse made frm plastic,” says researcher Dr. Thim Grffen, an envirnmental scientist at the University f Antwerp. “Hwever, the presence f PFAS in these straws means that culd be discredited.”
PFAS chemicals, infamus fr their lngevity and ptential harm, can adversely affect humans, wildlife and the envirnment. They bidegrade (生物降解) very slwly ver time and can persist ver thusands f years in the envirnment, a prperty that has led t them being knwn as “frever chemicals”. They are linked t varius health issues, including thyrid disease, liver damage, kidney cancer and s n. Furthermre, these chemicals are used in everyday items, such as utdr clthing and nn-stick pans, t make them water and heat-resistant.
Fr a mre in-depth analysis, the research team purchased 39 different brands f drinking straws made frm five materials—paper, bamb, glass, stainless steel and plastic, and then cnducted tw runds f testing fr PFAS. They fund that mst brands (69%) cntained PFAS, with 18 different PFAS detected in ttal. In paper straws, PFAS was detected in 90% f the brands tested. PFAS was als detected in 80% f brands f bamb straws, 75% f plastic straw brands and 40% f glass straw brands. They were nt detected in any f the five types f steel straws tested.
“The presence f PFAS in paper and bamb straws shws they are nt necessarily bidegradable,” says Dr. Grffen. “We did nt detect any PFAS in stainless steel straws, s I wuld advise cnsumers t use this type f straw—r just avid using straws.”
The PFAS cncentratins (浓度) were lw and, cnsidering that mst peple nly use straws ccasinally, pse a limited risk t human health. Hwever, PFAS can remain in the bdy fr many years and cncentratins can build up ver time. “Small amunts f PFAS, while nt harmful in themselves, can add t the chemical lad already present in the bdy,” Dr. Grffen cncludes.

T find ut, Cundiff turned her attentin t the lngitudinal Pittsburgh Yuth Study. Specifically, she lked int the infrmatin and facts abut 267 individuals in Pittsburgh public schls. The participants’ parents reprted hw much time their children spent with their friends during an average week, beginning when the bys were abut 6 years ld and cntinuing thrugh age 16. Analyses revealed that bys wh spent mre time with their friends in childhd and adlescence had healthier bld pressure and BMI at 32.
