      Grwing up, Stephanie Laska never wrked ut, preferring music class t P. E. and enjying sugary drinks and snacks. It wasn’t until her 40s, weighing arund 300 punds, that she decided t change her lifestyle. Simple diet changes, like cutting ut sda and limiting desserts, helped her lse 50 punds. But she hit a plateau and realized she needed t include mving.
      Initially, Laska decided t just walk. Gradually, she added running, starting with just ne side f a tennis curt and eventually running her first mile in 2014.
      Laska kept her new habit a secret at first. One day, at the park with her kids, she ran t catch up with them n their bikes. “The lk n my daughter’s face when she saw me running was like she saw Santa Claus,” Laska recalls. That’s when she started taking her ne-mile jgs up t a 5 km,10 km, half-marathn and eventually marathn distance. In 2015, she ran her first marathn and wn first place in her age grup.
      “What mtivated me was that it wasn’t as hard as I thught,” says Laska, wh has lst a ttal f 140 punds and kept it ff fr fur years. “Peple make huge decisins, but I just made a small chice t take a walk.” She emphasizes that these small decisins can snwball int significant changes.

      Researchers in Shanghai are develping a rbt “guide dg” that culd help blind peple. The rbt is nw being tested in Shanghai.
      The machine uses cameras and sensrs (传感器) t sense its envirnment. It is able t recgnize (辨认出) traffic lights which traditinal guide dgs are unable t recgnize. The rbt can cmmunicate by listening t and speaking with a blind persn. The rbt als uses artificial intelligence (AI) t recgnize vices and plan ways t g frm place t place.
      The rbt dg is abut the size f an English bulldg but a little wider than a real dg. It has six legs instead f fur because the researchers say the extra legs enhance its safety, making its mvements smther.
      41-year-ld Li Fei and 42-year-ld Zhu Sibin are amng the peple with eye prblems wh are helping the Jia Tng University team. They are testing the dg using Chinese-language instructins and prviding their feedback (反馈) fr the researchers t further develp the dg.
      Li is cmpletely blind while Zhu has little eyesight. Li nrmally uses a walking stick t walk. He said, “If this rbt guide dg cmes nt the market and I culd use it, at least it culd slve sme f my prblems in traveling alne.”
      Rbt guide dgs are als under develpment in Australia and Britain. But China needs a lt f traditinal guide dgs. There are just ver 400 guide dgs in China fr nearly 20 millin blind peple.
