Back in the day mre than25 years ag, when he was a cllege student at the University f Alabama at Birmingham, his ambitin was t wrk as a Spanish teacher.       Accrding t a new research, cutting ff rhins' hrns (犀牛角) reduces illegal hunting f the animals by nearly 80%. Rhins are hunted fr their hrns, and scientists think there are nw fewer than28,000 rhins left in the wrld.
      A team f researchers studied different rhin prtectin methds used in Greater Kruger NatinalPark, Suth Africa, between 2017 and 2023. Abut 25% f Africa's rhin ppulatin lives in GreaterKruger, and the researchers wanted t find ut which methds wrked well.
      The prtectin methds they studied included using detectin cameras, tracking dgs, helicpters,and rangers(护林员) t keep an eye ut fr illegal hunters. Mre than 700 illegal hunters were arrested, but the researchers fund that arresti ng the illegal hunters didn't significantly reduce the number f rhins that were killed.
      Anther methd that is being used t prtect the rhins is t cut ff their hrns, which is called"dehrning" This desn't hurt the animals because their hrns are made f keratin, the same substance that makes up human hair and fingernails. That is, the hrns can grw back ver time, s the average rhin needs t be dehrned every 18 mnths t tw years. The researchers fund that dehrning reduced hunting by 78%.
      While dehrning rhins can save the animals' lives, anther study discvered that the methd changes their behavir. It fund that dehrned rhins are less likely t get invlved in scial interactins with ther rhins, and the area they chse t cver as they mve arund is much smaller. Scientists think that because rhins use their hrns in battles t prtect their territry, withut a hrn they may becme mre cautius (谨慎的) and avid cnflicts.
