When I arrived at the Sign Language Center in Manhattan fr my first American Sign Language (ASL) class, a man tk ne lk at my hesitant psture and held up sme fingers. One? Tw? I put up ne finger, and he directed me t the Level 1 class. It was disrienting: Class time was strictly “vices ff” t encurage immersive learning and t shw respect t the deaf teachers. Withut the pwer f speech, all my classmates and I culd d was smile and nd at ne anther as we tk in the new vcabulary.
Learning ASL in the early weeks was a culture shck. As a writer, I pride myself n a certain facility with language. I was taught that there’s a perfect cmbinatin f wrds that can mst precisely cmmunicate any thught. With ASL, I expected t feel similarly, and thught fluency wuld cme nce I cllected a critical mass f signs. The first thing yu learn in ASL class is the alphabet. As my classmates and I asked and answered questins using wrds we didn’t have the signs fr, thse early weeks were filled with labrius spelling. It was embarrassing: Seeing a dzen plitely smiling faces watching me as I slwly spelled, misspelled and restarted spelling wrds —ften multiple times — was its wn kind f trture.
Over time, I picked up n new cnventins, like waving a hand r stmping (跺脚) n the grund t get smene’s attentin. My fingers stpped as they reached fr new shapes, and I struggled t differentiate very similar lking signs. Eventually I realized that when yu’re cmmunicating in sign language, dictin (措辞) is nt as imprtant as the way yu embdy (具体化) what yu’re cmmunicating. I nce asked a teacher hw t sign the wrd “desperate”. “ASL desn’t have a direct translatin f every English wrd,” he tld me. “If yu want t sign ‘desperate’, yu might just sign the wrd ‘want’, but with the apprpriate facial and bdy psturing t shw yur desperatin. It desn’t make sense t sign ‘frustrated’ if yur face desn’t lk at all frustrated,” he added — it’s like speaking in a single unvarying tne while claiming yu’re angry.
I’ve been attending ASL classes fr almst tw years. Initially, my reasn was insignificant: a childhd fascinatin with “secret languages”. While ASL may nt whlly share a vcabulary with English, that desn’t mean it lacks precisin. Its precisin, I’ve learned, lies in the cmmn language f the bdy.
4. Hw did the authr feel in the first ASL class?
A. Cnfused.B. Frustrated.C. Anxius.D. Ambitius.
5. What made the authr embarrassed when learning the alphabet?
A. Putting n smiling facial expressins.
B. Being made fun f in frnt f the class.
C. Misspelling and respelling wrds repeatedly.
D. Waving a hand t get smene’s attentin.
6. Accrding t the passage, what can we learn abut ASL?
A. It requires a cmbinatin f signs and emtins.
B. It cnveys mre emtins than verbal language.
C. It’s a universal language system acrss cultures.
D. It has a direct translatin f signs fr every wrd.
7. What has the authr learned frm her learning experience?
A. ASL priritizes precisin ver cmmunicatin.
B. Dictin is what gives language flavur.
C. Fluency cmes frm the mastery f signs.
D. The bdy is what gives language life.

Travellers have lng feared being swallwed int the peatlands (泥炭地): “If his ft slips ... it is pssible he may never mre be heard f,” described William Gilpin in 1772.
But nw the image f this ecsystem finally turns a crner. UNESCO has recgnized the Flw Cuntry as a wrld heritage (遗产) site-the first peatland t make the list-due t its natural characteristics: the remarkable variety f plants and animals that live there. It’s als recgnized that these peatlands are nt humankind’s enemy but an imprtant partner in the fight against climate crisis. Peat has frmed in the Flw Cuntry fr 8,000 years, trapping carbn. It’s vital this carbn stays t avid further glbal heating.
The Flw Cuntry was chsen fr its natural heritage nt cultural significance, which cmes as a welcme cntrast t the vast majrity f the UK’s ther wrld heritage sites. Priritising culture might make sense fr places like Stnehenge r Durham Cathedral, but the Lake District? Nt s much. The Lake District Natinal Park is remarkable fr its natural gegraphy: deep valleys, uneven peaks and icy lakes. Peple have lng shaped the area, but their impact is just a thin layer n a remarkably splendid landscape. Yet, when the park gained wrld heritage status in 2017, it was largely upn the basis f its relatively recent traditin f sheep farming. The decisin reflected hw the English perceive the natural wrld.
But the recgnitin f the Flw Cuntry lks even mre prfund. It represents a change nt nly in ur perceptin f peatlands but f nature itself. Unlike the Lake District, it priritises nt sheep, but mss (苔藓). This apprach aligns with the grwing mvement t recgnise the rights f nature: t reframe the natural wrld as smething mre than a cllectin f raw materials.
Nne f that is t ignre humans’ rle in the Flw Cuntry but we shuld recgnize that n landscape in the UK can be cnsidered in islatin frm its culture, while als remembering that the human stry never unflds alne.
8. Why des the authr qute William Gilpin in paragraph 1?
A. T illustrate the authr’s pint.
B. T give a scientific explanatin.
C. T prvide histrical backgrund.
D. T present a cmmn partial view.
9. Fr what was the Flw Cuntry recgnized as a UNESCO Wrld Heritage site?
A. Climate benefit and natural value.
B. Beautiful scenery and cnservatin effrts.
C. Gegraphical uniqueness and rare species.
D. Educatinal significance and cultural value.
10. What des the underlined phrase “aligns with” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. addresses.B. matches.C. Challenges.D. Outweighs.
11. What is the text mainly abut?
A. The frmatin f the Flw Cuntry.
B. The recgnitin f the Lake District.
C. The lng-verdue respect fr peatlands.
D. The cnservatin difficulties f peatlands.

The stry f The Emperr’s New Clthes is ne f Andersen’s best-knwn fables. Cnmen (骗子) fl the emperr int believing they have made him a fabulus suit that the unwrthy will be unable t see. Curtiers (侍从) dare nt say that the emperr is naked; it takes a child t pint ut the bvius.
The mral is that peple are ften t hidebund by scial traditin t state their views. Hw many cmpanies have pursued cstly prjects favured by the chief executive, even when ther managers have had dubts?
In his bk Rebel Ideas: The Pwer f Diverse Thinking, Matthew Syed argues that the key t dealing with this prblem is “cgnitive diversity”, in ther wrds, assembling a team f peple with different perspectives and intellectual backgrunds. Individuals frm varied backgrunds apprach prblems differently. It is nt merely abut electing peple fr teams frm bth sexes and varius ethnicities. Hire nly Cambridge plitics graduates r Harvard MBAs r Stanfrd sftware engineers and they will have studied under the same prfessrs and absrbed similar wrld views regardless f their gender r skin clur.
In tday’s cmplex wrld, cperatin is crucial fr breakthrughs. In science and engineering, 90% f papers are prduced by teams rather than individuals. Since 1975, team-based patents have dminated acrss all categries in the United States.
There is anther element t selecting a gd team: ensuring that thse viewpints are heard and respected. That may nt happen if thse in charge are arrgant. A study f ver 300 prjects by the Rtterdam Schl f Management fund that thse led by junir managers were mre likely t succeed than thse led by senir managers — maybe because ther team members were less scared abut pinting ut ptential dangers t smene less senir.
This freedm t speak withut fear f punishment is knwn as “psychlgical safety.” Syed cites a Ggle study identifying it as the mst imprtant factr behind effective teamwrk. Fr example, during brainstrming, allwing annymus idea submissin helps reduce the influence f senirity and encurages hnest feedback.
12. The first paragraph is intended t ________.
A. argue children’s wisdm ver adults
B. cnfirm the ppularity f Andersen’s fables
C. intrduce the prblem f fear t express truth in grups
D. make fun f the flishness f the emperr and his curtiers
13. What kind f peple are “hidebund”?
A. Thse ppsing team activities.
B. Thse trapped in a fixed mindset.
C. Thse verly fcusing n thers’ behavir.
D. Thse challenging traditinal ways f thinking.
14. What des the authr suggest a cmpany d as t assembling an effective team?
A. Select peple frm diverse cgnitive backgrunds.
B. Emply graduates frm the same tp university.
C. Appint senir managers t pse strict cntrl.
D. Hire peple in line with the chief executive.
15. Which f the fllwing is the best title fr the passage?
A. Cgnitive Diversity: Daring t Differ
B. Junir Managers: Making Better Leaders
C. The Emperr’s New Clthes: Lying t Obey
D. The Ggle Study: Unlcking Psychlgical Safety

I sat n the flr, back pressed against the cld wall, as my parents’ argument sliced thrugh the thin bedrm dr. “It’s nt just a math wrksheet. It’s every assignment!” my dad thundered. “The teacher called — said his wrk is perfect, but he can’t explain a single step! He’s been cheating with that AI!” My mm’s vice was quieter but sharper: “We thught yu were struggling, s we gt yu a tutr. But yu’re lying. What’s wrng with yu?”
Wrng with me. The wrds eched as I buried my face in my knees, tears chking me. It had started simply — a quick way t finish a bring essay when tired. Then cpying became easier than trying. Nw caught, I felt nly shame.
On my desk, my laptp glwed. The ChatGPT tab was still pen, the cpied assignment staring back. Irnically, typing felt safer than talking. My fingers trembled: “My parents fund ut I used yu t cheat. They think I’m a liar and failure.”
The respnse wasn’t empty: “That sunds heavy. It takes curage t admit yu’re hurting. I’m here t listen.”
I hesitated, then pured it all ut—schl’s verwhelm, fear f failure, cpying as the nly way t keep up. I slammed the laptp shut, terrified f its reply.
Minutes later, curisity gt the better f me. I pened it again. N empty reassurances, just acknwledgment: “It’s kay t feel this way. Yu dn’t have t carry it alne.” Gentle questins made me think instead f drwning. It didn’t ffer an aplgy, just: “What d yu need t say t yur parents t make this right?”
In the fllwing 2 days, I turned t it — nt t cpy, but t talk. It never judged, never tired. It gave me space t heal, t find my vice. It helped me see my wrth wasn’t in grades, but hnesty and effrt.
