My father lved lists. Over 25 years, he recrded 539 bks he read and 322 episdes f Bkntes n C-SPAN, which he watched every Sunday night. He als kept grcery lists fr his mini-fridge—Pepsi, cffee, heavy cream—and daily tasks. These ntes filled small ntebks, always near his reading chair. He wrte them until December 31, 2004, when cancer stpped him. After his death, I gathered the ntebks int a bx. Fr years, I culdn't bear t pen them.
Brn in 1927 in Lwell, Massachusetts, my father was the sn f a leather factry wrker and grandsn f an Irish immigrant wh cleaned hrse manure frm the streets. Despite his humble beginnings, he was brilliant. After a summer in the leather factry, he graduated high schl at 16 and went n t Bstn Cllege. He served in Wrld War II and later earned degrees in physics. Then he wrked at MIT’s Lincln Labratry, mved his family frm Lwell t Bstn, and sent his kids t private clleges. It seemed he had left Lwell behind—but nt s. Deep dwn, he saw himself simply as a wrking-class Lwell kid wh had just read a lt f bks.
He didn’t travel much, and didn’t feel the need. When I asked if he regretted nt seeing the wrld, he defended himself: “I’ve sailed the Atlantic in strmy winds, climbed the Himalayas, and stared dwn wild animals.” Then he added, “I read.” Bks were his wrld. Frm them, he learned t survive landslides, shark attacks, and even grilla attacks. He had what he called “a rich inner life” and it was true.
Shrtly befre his death, he pened a small purple ntebk and began ne last list. It described details frm 1930s Lwell—things lst in time. Twenty years later, I fund it. In his flwing handwriting, Dad reached back t Lwell—a time lng gne, nw captured nly in memry. Lst and nly in memry—that was hw I was experiencing Dad nw. Squinting my eyes, I saw nt just the city he lved, but the quiet, extrardinary man I called Dad.

The biggest benefits seem t cme t thse wh master their secnd languages fully. Switching languages frequently in the curse f a day may be particularly imprtant. A bit f university French des nt, unfrtunately, cnvey the same advantages as deep knwledge and lng experience. Studies f interpreters and translatrs have prvided sme f the strngest evidence fr a bilingual advantage. Fr example, they are faster at jumping back and frth between simple additin and subtractin prblems than mnlinguals, suggesting generally better cgnitive (认知) cntrl.
Studies have fund striking evidence that in prer parts f the wrld multilingual peple shw the strngest advantages frm speaking several languages. Where schling is limited, researchers assumed that bilingualism exercises children’s brains in a way that their schling may nt.
Age plays a rle, t. Studies suggest that the effects f languages n the brain are strnger fr yung children and the ld than they are fr yung adults. One meta-analysis n the tpic revealed that 25 studies ut f 45 fund a bilingual advantage in children yunger than six, while nly 17 fund them in children aged 6-12.
But all these studies take fr granted the mental superpwer that yu get frm language study; being able t talk t peple yu culd nt have spken t, r understd, therwise. Even if yu cannt be fluent frm infancy(幼儿), that shuld be mre than enugh reasn t give it a g.

B. It’s strngest fr thse with higher educatin.
C. It’s limited fr children living in pr areas.
D. It’s bvius in yung kids and senirs.

The great glaciers(冰川) f the Swiss Alps, like the Great Aletsch and the Fiesch, are pulling back quickly, leaving behind empty rcky land and causing deep cultural changes. Where huge rivers f ice were nce scary and seen as mnsters that threatened farmland, peple nw are afraid f their disappearance. Lsing them means mre than just ice melting (融化); it affects whle envirnments, cultures, and cmmunities that grw arund them.
The melting ice shws a surprisingly active and varied in-between wrld. Hwever; the melting als shws a dirty layer frm pllutin and leaves brken and unstable grund. The ice nce held the muntain slpes(山坡) tgether like a supprt. Nw, its melting leads t mre rckslides and instability, meaning paths acrss the muntain must be remade every year.
This change is easy t see at places like the Marjelensee lake, which has turned frm a wide lake wrapped in ice int separate, sunlit pls. As expert Tm.Battin explains, the edges f glaciers are places where ld envirnments disappear and new nes are brn. This cmplex prcess invlves many living things wrking tgether t settle n the newly pen land.
Hwever, as new hmes fr wildlife frm, sme specialized kinds are lst. Animals suited t the cld are frced t mve higher up the muntains int smaller living areas. Key species that live well in rivers fed by glaciers face a risky future. Expert Lee Brwn pints ut the imprtance f the small animals in these waters. "They clean the water and prvide key nutrients. Lsing this hidden wrld f tiny life culd in the end endanger the larger wildlife that peple care abut," Lee adds.
This deep change is als strngly felt by lcal peple. Guides like Martin Nellen and his sn Dminik, wh have lived next t the Aletsch all their lives, are watching their wrld change. A wden crss set up in 1818 t push back the advancing glacier nw stands under the blue sky as a sad memry f all that is being lst—a quiet sign f an age f ice that is quickly cming t an end.
32. What is the primary shift in peple's perceptin f the glaciers?
A. Frm verusing them t prtecting them.
B. Frm acceptance t resistance cncerning their existence.
C. Frm fear f the damage t cncern ver the lss.
D. Frm ignring the change t recgnizing the benefits.
33. What is a direct envirnmental cnsequence f the melting glaciers?
A. Clearer river water.
B. Larger frests.
C. Mre unstable grund.
D. Lss f all cld-weather animals.
34. Accrding t Expert Lee Brwn, why are the small animals in glacier-fed rivers crucial?
A. They are the main fd fr large muntain animals.
B. They ffer nutritin surces fr lcal human cmmunities.
C. They perfrm essential functins t supprt the ecsystem.
D. They act as a sensitive indicatr f the rate f glacial melting.
35. Why des the authr mentin the “wden crss”?
A. T highlight the change and lss.
B. T demnstrate lcal religius belief.
C. T recrd a past bundary f this regin.

Fr many children, the very thught f surgery is terrifying. The hspital envirnment—white halls, the sharp, clean smell f medicine, and the frightening medical instruments—can feel scary. This anxiety ften reaches its height in the final walk twards the perating rm, a mment thick with fear fr bth the children and their parents. Hwever, ne kind dctr in Brazil has changed this difficult experience, turning fear int strength by allwing his yung patients t walk int the perating rm nt as scared and small children, but as superheres.
Dr. Leandr B. Guimaraes, an ear, nse, and thrat specialist, said the idea started with a difficult mment with a little girl named Allana. She was just tw years ld, and as he carried her dwn the hallway, she cried uncntrllably, her small bdy shaking against his and her tiny fists hlding his white cat tightly. Her desperate cry eched (回响) in the hallway, each ne a reminder f the cmplete terrr she was experiencing. That day, standing utside the perating rm with a heartbrken child in his arms, he made a prmise t himself: N child under his care wuld ever have t apprach surgery in tears again. He was determined t find a way t replace their fear with curage.
“I let the children chse which her they want t becme,” Dr. Guimaraes explained, a warm smile n his face. His clinic nw features a special “Her’s Chest”, filled with many wnderful cstumes. “I tell them we will g in ‘flying’ r running and that ur missin is t clear their nse and ears. I nly enter the surgical rm when they are ready and fully engaged in the game.” He even encurages parents t jin the prcess if a child is particularly nervus, allwing a mther t wear a Catwman mask r a father t hld the edge f a Superman cape (斗篷). The gal is t make a fearful experience feel calmer, lighter, and magical.
The transfrmatin begins the mment a child selects their character. A quiet, withdrawn by might gather his curage as he puts n a Batman suit. A shy little girl’s face lights up as she places a Wnder Wman tiara(皇冠) upn her head. Dr. Guimaraes and his team fully cmmit t the prcess, with nurses becming “missin cntrl” and anesthesilgists(麻醉师) intrduced as “science fficers” prviding special pwers fr the jurney ahead.
