Shared Mbility: Making Travel Easier fr All
Shared mbility services, such as carshares and bikeshares, have psitive effects n the envirnment. Hwever, access t these services is nt equal fr everyne. Research shws that shared mbility services are mre cmmnly available in wealthier urban areas. Mst users tend t be yunger, wealthier, and physically able. T build a sustainable transprtatin system, it is essential t make these services inclusive fr all peple.
Sme cities have intrduced prgrams t supprt lw-incme residents. These prgrams help increase the use f shared vehicles and reduce dependence n persnal cars. Recently, abut 70% f micrmbility prgrams in the US have taken measures t better serve disadvantaged grups, such as accepting cash payments and ffering nn-smartphne bking ptins.
Still, many barriers remain. Surveys indicate that peple in rural areas and thse with lwer incmes encunter mre bstacles when trying t use bikeshares. Cst, lack f familiarity, and limited availability are cmmn prblems, as illustrated in the Figure.
Nn-prfit rganizatins are als playing an imprtant rle. Fr example, SharedMbility Inc., a Buffal-based NGO, prvides free e-bikes t underserved cmmunities and rganizes training sessins t prmte cycling culture and safety. Mbitwin in Belgium supprts elderly peple and thse with limited mbility by prviding affrdable rides bked via telephne. Similarly, Tim Carsharing in Austria ffers vehicles suitable fr wheelchairs and prvides child seats upn request.
In cnclusin, understanding different needs and making services mre adaptable are key steps tward fair and sustainable urban transprtatin.

I started walking backward fr n apparent reasn. I was simply waving gdbye t my daughters when it hit me t take a few steps backward. Since I’d already started, I thught I culd walk all the way hme that way. After all, the cntradictin f mving frward by ging backward seemed engaging and wrth explring.
The first prblem was practical. Snw is a pain even fr regular walking, s my pace slwed dwn cnsiderably. At this different pace, life itself felt rushed in cmparisn. Hw silly it is that we’re always in such a hurry t get smewhere. Fr example, I ften arrive at places lng after my bdy gets there. Smetimes I reach my daughters’ schl, but my mind is still at hme, wndering whether I unplugged my wife’s hair dryer. Walking backward, hwever, frced me t adjust the pace f my bdy t my mind.
The next thing had t d with visin. In regular walking, the path ahead is always visible. Here, yu use ther senses: yu hear the car appraching, yu sense the unevenness f the grund, and yu ntice the change in the firmness f the snw. Yu activate an entire set f skills we usually dn’t use because f ur dependence n sight. This way, the familiar path I walked every day suddenly felt like a grand adventure, a discvery I hadn’t anticipated.
Because f my addictin t flish ideas, I decided t cntinue my backward walking fr the rest f the day. And I quickly realized smething bvius: the path I enjyed mst was the ne I had already travelled. And it struck me that this was the right way t lk at life: mving tward a destinatin withut ever frgetting where yu’ve been, r hw far yu’ve cme. Lking back is always gd fr self-value. There’s n way t lk at yesterday and nt feel better: fr the illness that didn’t kill yu, r the happy childhd days that still make yu smile.
4. What interested the authr in the first paragraph?
A. Finding a new rute back hme.
B. Engaging himself in deep thinking.
C. Mving frward in a different manner.

A. We need t stay fcused at wrk.
B. We dn’t need t live a rushed life.
C. We shuld spend mre time with family.
D. We shuldn’t cmpare urselves t thers.
6. Hw did the authr vercme the visin prblem?
A. He studied a set f new skills.B. He depended n his memry.
C. He fllwed his sense f directin.D. He made full use f ther senses.
7. What message des the authr seem t deliver in the last paragraph?
A. Childhd is the best part in life.B. It’s inspiring t reflect n the past.
C. It’s imprtant t find yur self-value.D. One ught t learn t frgive himself.

Numerus industries prduce larger quantities f wastewaters cntaining high cncentratins f rganic substances and inrganic salts. Discharging these wastewaters t the envirnment is harmful t ecsystem and human health. Hwever, the high salt cntent in these wastewaters pse serius challenges fr existing treatment prcesses. Researchers at Rice University, in partnership with Guangdng University f Technlgy, have develped a grundbreaking methd fr it — adpting dialysis (透析) technlgy cmmnly used in medicine.
The researchers selected cmmercial ultrafiltratin membranes (超滤膜) which were designed t let salt pass thrugh while trapping rganic substances. They set up a system where salty wastewater and fresh water flwed in ppsite directins n either side f a special membrane, withut needing pumps. Due t the difference f salt cncentratins between waste water and fresh water, salt naturally mves int the fresh water while rganic substances are kept back. T test this, they cmpared the amunt f rganic material and salt in the waste water befre and after treatment. The results shwed the system culd effectively remve salt withut using extra amunts f fresh water.
One significant advantage f dialysis is its resistance t fuling (积垢). Unlike pressure-driven systems, dialysis experienced ntably less buildup f rganic materials n the membrane because it desn’t rely n extra pressure. “This culd translate t lwer energy cnsumptin, less maintenance, and fewer membrane replacements,” said Elimelech, a researcher n the study.
Additinally, with suitable membranes, dialysis can be tailred t separate varius rganics, enabling the selective recvery f valuable resurces frm the wastewater. In this way, dialysis creates pprtunities fr transfrming wastewater treatment plants int resurce recvery factries, aligning the principles f a recycling ecnmy.
Overall, while dialysis alne desn’t fully purify wastewater, it can transfrm the high-salinity rganic wastewater stream int a lw-salinity rganic wastewater stream that can be readily treated by cnventinal methds, which revlutinizes the treatment f sme f the mst challenging industrial wastewaters.
8. What is the majr challenge faced by current wastewater treatment?
A. The lack f sufficient treatment devices.
B. The high salt percentage in wastewaters.
C. The substantial vlumes f wastewaters.
D. The cnsiderable cst f treatment prcesses.
9. What can be learned abut the prcess f dialysing wastewaters?
A. The membrane transfrmed salt int rganics.
B. The extra pressure cntributed t salt transprt.
C. The cncentratin difference played the key rle.
D. Liquids n bth sides flwed in the same directin.
10. What des the underlined wrd “aligning” in paragraph 4 prbably mean?
A. Matching.B. Establishing.C. Adjusting.D. Challenging.
11. Which f the fllwing can be a suitable title?
A. Dialysis: A Pineering Blessing fr Medicine
B. Membranes: A Prtective Screen fr Fresh Water
C. Dialysis: A New Pathway fr Wastewater Treatment
D. High-Salinity Wastewater: A Threat t the Envirnment.
D
The grwing interactin between humans and artificial intelligence (AI) is shaping a new way f thinking, knwn as System 0. This new cgnitive (认知的) framewrk exists utside the human mind and wrks as an external “thinking assistant”. System 0 wrks alngside the tw established mdels f human thught: System l, which is fast, intuitive (直觉的) , and autmatic, and System 2, which is slwer, mre analytical, and reflective.
Just as an external drive allws us t stre data that are nt present n the cmputer, and we can wrk by cnnecting ur drive t a PC wherever we are. AI, with its pwerful prcessing and data-handling capabilities, can represent an external circuit t the human brain capable f enhancing it. Hence the idea f System 0, which is essentially a frm f “external” thinking that relies n the capabilities f AI.
By managing enrmus amunts f data, AI can prcess infrmatin and prvide suggestins based n cmplex algrithms (算法). Hwever, unlike intuitive r analytical thinking, System 0 can perfrm calculatins, make predictins, and generate respnses withut truly “understanding” the cntent f the data it wrks with.
The integratin f system 0 int human cgnitin raises sme cncerns. One f the mst pressing nes is the ptential damage t ur critical thinking and reasning abilities. If we blindly trust the utput f system 0 withut questining it, we risk lsing ur ability t think independently, leading t a weaker capacity fr innvatin and creativity. At the same time, it is imprtant t acknwledge the ptential benefits f system 0 in increasing ur cgnitive capabilities and addressing cmplex challenges that may be beynd the capacity f human intelligence alne.
Despite the plarized visins n the tpic f the evlutin f AI, we recmmend that this revlutinary system be the bject f a deep, shared reflectin n hw we plan t integrate it int the future f human thught. T ensure that AI remains a tl t enhance — rather than decrease — ur cgnitive autnmy, clear bundaries must be established.
12. What is the purpse f paragraph 1?
A. T state AI’s influence n daily life.B. T intrduce a new cgnitive mdel.
C. T cmpare three thinking systems.D. T discuss AI’s rle in decisin-making.
13. Which can best describe the essence f System 0?
A. A deep meaning seeker.B. An analytical thinking pineer.
C. A smart decisin-maker.D. An external cgnitive enhancer.
14. What is the authr’s tne carried in paragraph 4?
A. Pushy.B. Indifferent.C. Objective.D. Dismissive.
15. What will the fllw-up paragraph mst prbably talk abut?
A. Mral dilemmas in human-AI integratin.
B. Pssibly prmising prspects f System 0.
C. Technical challenges in sharpening System 0.
D. Specific guidelines n using System 0 critically.

I was incredibly prud f my schl, the Maplewd Elementary. It cnnected me t my rts, as my father and grandfather had all graduated frm here.
S, when ur teacher Mr. Dw annunced a grup prject t create a brchure (小册子) abut ur schl fr its 100th anniversary, I was thrilled. The best three brchures wuld be displayed in the schl library, which was a chance t shw the new students hw wnderful ur schl was.
I was paired with tw classmates: Jake. wh lved phtgraphy, and Lily wh had a gift fr writing. Wrking with thers culd be fun, right? But my enthusiasm quickly faded.
Our first meeting was a disaster. When we discussed which part f the schl we shuld fcus n, Jake kept talking abut cameras and phts. I turned t Lily, hping fr sme supprt. But she simply shrugged and said, “I’m nt really int this. It sunds bring.” Jake ndded in agreement. The prject seemed t be harder than I thught.
At ur next meeting, I tried t lead the cnversatin back t the prject. I shared sme interesting facts I had researched abut the schl. Hwever, neither f them seemed interested. Jake had prmised t gather materials frm the library, but instead he shwed us phts taken n the weekend. Lily hadn’t started her part f the research either, claiming she had been t busy. I felt like I was the nly ne wh cared.
Back hme, I decided t take matters int my wn hands. I stayed up late that night, trying t create the brchure by myself. But n matter hw hard I tried, the result was far frm satisfactry.
