Mars is the furth clsest planet t the Sun. On 23 July 2020, China’s first Mars lander, Tianwen-1, was sent int space frm Wenchang, Hainan Island. The spacecraft (航天器) takes its name frm an ancient pem by Qu Yuan (340-278 BCE). “Tianwen” means “Questins t Heaven (天)” and expresses China’s determinatin (决心) t explre the universe.
Mars has interested peple fr thusands f years. Arund 3,000 years ag, in ancient China, peple already knew abut the planet and began t study hw it mved in the sky. Hwever, it was difficult t find ut mre abut it befre the 20th century. Thanks t the wrk f scientists, we have learnt a lt abut Mars. Spacecraft like Tianwen-1 will help us find ut mre abut ur red neighbur.
After travelling mre than 470 millin kilmetres, Tianwen-1 reached the red planet n 10 February 2021. The craft circled arund the planet fr three mnths befre landing n the surface (表面) n 15 May. There, it released (放开) a 240-kilgram rver (天体登陆车) named Zhurng. During the next 100 days, Zhurng drve 1,000 metres n the planet’s surface and cntinued its travel. It tk phts f Mars and studied different kinds f rcks, and then it sent the infrmatin back t the Earth.
The success f Tianwen-1 is nly the beginning f China’s Mars explratin prgramme. Maybe ne day Chinese astrnauts will visit Mars.
