Our first intrductin ccurred while I was teaching a nursing curse at the care center. “Yu need t meet ur new resident, Ruby!” the charge nurse said. I simply said hell t the eighty-nine-year-ld lady, and five years later we are what Ruby refers t as BFFs (Best Friends Frever).
Over the years, I have realized that in an inter-generatinal friendship such as urs, each generatin has s much t learn and teach each ther. Ruby was als a nurse. I lved t hear abut her nursing practice, and she was always eager t hear abut tday’s advances in healthcare.
One day, I picked up all fur f my grandchildren t visit Ruby. The next inter-generatinal friendships were brn. Over the next few years, I witnessed the happiness that the children and Ruby shared. They develped a mutual lve fr each ther that I wished we culd recreate fr ther elderly peple. This thught stayed with me until I retired frm nursing a few years later.
I spent the next eight mnths creating Ms. Ruby and the Gigi Squad: Friendship Cmes in All Ages. This labr-f-lve bk recrds the many fun events the children created fr Ruby ver the years. They held surprise birthday parties, tea parties, and tk her t schl musicals.
This bk has taken my life by strm as it has received diverse awards and brught many pprtunities t publicly speak abut inter-generatinal friendships.
My visin fr the bk was riginally n a smaller scale and written t encurage families with children t visit an lder adult. I was in awe when entire schls began appraching me t use the bk fr service prjects. One activity that I included in the bk, titled The Sunshine Bag Prject, tk ff, and children began giving the elderly these special bags that included letters, cards, and small treasures.
It was als a jy t knw that in the next chapter f life, I culd cntinue t make a difference t thers — all because I had the curage t step ut f my cmfrt zne and take a wnderful step tward authrship.
4.What has the authr gained frm her cnnectin with Ruby?

We all want t give ur kids the best pssible advice, but when it cmes t what path they shuld explre after educatin and what career pssibilities are ut there, where shuld we start?
“Fr parents, the mst imprtant thing is t keep ptins pen and t understand that equipping them with life skills are imprtant,” says secndary schl teacher David Earl.
Yur kid will prbably have sme idea f the terms “grwth” and “fixed mindset”. Simply put, the central idea f the grwth mindset (思维模式) is that intelligence (智力) and ability can be develped, and children wh have this idea will try t seek pprtunities t push themselves, understanding that they are likely t achieve what they want if they persevere. This challenges a fixed mindset, the idea that a child’s ability is limited and set in advance.
Help yur kid prepare fr clsed drs, tugh interviews, rejectin letters by encuraging them t embrace them and understand that nne f them is failure. Remind them f things they’ve vercme, suggesting they view every negative experience as a chance t learn and grw, rather than an end pint.
Emplyers lay stress n all kinds f life skills, including prblem-slving, leadership and creative thinking. S getting yur children t think abut thse skills is helpful. Barclays LifeSkills has listed skills imprtant fr individuals in their future careers — cmmunicating thrugh vides and audi, rather than writing, and wrking with peple frm different generatins and backgrunds.
Gd grades and passing examinatins may seem like the mst imprtant thing t yur kid right nw, but try t encurage them t als think f lnger-term gals. By thinking f a lng-term gal, yu may be able t find areas they need t imprve.
Thinking abut the future can be challenging, but it’s imprtant that yur kid understands that the next step is just that ne small step. It desn’t have t be anything as huge as what career t pursue r which curse t take. This is a team effrt: Ask teachers, friends, r turn t experts fr tips.
8.What des the grwth mindset stress?
      A. A child’s ability can be imprved.
      B. Success cmes nly frm gd grades.
      C. One’s intelligence stays unchanged.
      D. Children shuld avid challenges t succeed.
9.Which is clsest in meaning t the underlined wrd “embrace” in Paragraph 4?
      A. Ignre.B. Measure.C. Perfrm.D. Accept.
10.Which f the fllwing might the writer agree with?
      A. Children shuld cnsider lng-term gals instead f gd grades.
      B. It’s parents’ respnsibility t chse their children’ future careers.
      C. It’s a life skill t get alng with peple frm different backgrunds.
      D. Children shuld be independent f their parents as early as pssible.
11.Wh is the abve passage mainly intended fr?
      A. Children.B. Parents.C. Emplyers.D. Teachers.
      D
