The text frm my sn said it all: “Dad, there's an article yu were brn t write that the wrld is finally ready fr: Bring back the handkerchief!” Fr me, the handkerchief never left.
My mther raised me with several fixed rules. One was that a gentleman always has a clean handkerchief in his right back pcket, a piece f simple cttn, rughly 15 inches square and less than fur inches when flded. I was a dutiful sn, but I can recall being a ten-year-ld n the schl playgrund, feeling the hankie directly ver my butt(屁股) and wndering what it was there fr. Time wuld tell.
Every night fr mst f my life, I remve frm my trusers the items I'm ging t need the next day— keys, wallet and hankie, if it's still unused. After 60 years, my bdy weight feels wrng if I'm heading ut f the huse with an empty back pcket.
I am sure this habit has smetimes shcked friends and clleagues wh've nticed it as a little quaint, but in plite cmpany nbdy cmments n smebdy else's business. That rule f behaviur, f curse, did nt apply t ne's children in the late20th century. When my three kids were grwing up, they all let me knw whenever they culd that my hankie was as ridiculusly ld-fashined as a tp hat and a walking stick. They had their arguments. If yu have t be prepared every day fr a cld, why nt chse a little packet f tissues.
Pint taken—— especially in the time f pandemic. But a cttn handkerchief is a lt mre durable than tissues, creates n waste, and has a far wider variety f uses. Can yu grab the handle f a pt that's biling ver with a tissue? Or d yu recall the cases f skinned knees and runny nses that hankie wiped? In fact, fr Father's Day last year my wife gave me several new handkerchiefs. And by nw, neither f us can cunt the number f times her eyes have welled up at a mvie, r, as happens, she's needed t blw her nse.
Yet nt even my mther culd have expected the hankie's new rle as an Essential Public Health Appliance. All f us have learnt hw hard it is t fllw advice frm medical experts abut nt tuching yur face. Here is an answer. Use yur hankie. In case f emergency, yur handkerchief can becme a DIY mask that can be pulled ver yur lwer face like a rbber entering a bank.
S, my sn has it right: Bring back the handkerchief. It may actually save a few lives.

Hllywd may have warned abut the risks f building up relatinships with artificial intelligence (AI), but ne cmputer scientist says we may be missing a trick if we d nt accept the psitives that human-machine relatinships have t ffer.
Tny Presctt, prfessr f rbtics at the University f Sheffield, argues that AI has an imprtant rle t play in preventing human lneliness. Just as we develp meaningful relatinships with pets, and have n dubt abut children playing with dlls, s we shuld be pen t the value f AI t adults , he says.
“Human lneliness is ften described as à cycle in which lneliness leads t lwer self-wrth, which discurages further cmmunicatin with peple,” Presctt writes in a new bk The Psychlgy f Artificial Intelligence. “There may be ways in which AI cmpaninship culd help break it by strengthening feelings f self-wrth and helping maintain r imprve scial skills. If s, relatinships with AIs culd supprt peple t find cmpaninship with human and artificial thers.”
With mre than a third f Americans reprting “serius lneliness”, the lneliness prblem has becme clear in recent years. Whether AI can, r shuld, be part f the slutin is nt a new debate. Sherry Turkle. prfessr f scial science at MIT, has warned that frming relatinships with machines culd backfire(事与愿违), and lead peple t have fewer secure and satisfying human relatinships.
Murali Draiswamy, prfessr f medicine at Duke University, said: “Right nw, all the evidence pints t having a clse human friend as the best slutin t lneliness. But until sciety put scial cnnectedness n tp f the list, rbts are a slutin fr the millins f peple wh have n friends.”、
Researchers may sn knw whether peple turn t AI fr cmpany. Tech firms are building chatbts t be ever mre respnsive t emtins. This week, OpenAI asked
Scarlett Jhanssn t be the vice f their latest chatbt, GPT-4, t “help cnsumers t feel cmfrtable”. Jhanssn refused, but the chatbt came nt the market with a vice that friends and family thught was hers.
28. Why are the pets and dlls mentined in paragraph 2?
A. T shw the meaningful relatinship between Al and children.×
B. T stress the limitatins f human-AI relatinships in daily life.
C. T display the ptential fr AI t prvide similar cmpaninship.
D. T suggest the pssibility fr AI t replace traditinal cmpanins. X
29. What des the underlined wrd “it” in paragraph 3 refer t?
A. The cntinued failure f human relatinships with AI. Y
B. The repeated use f AI and thers fr cmpaninship. ×
C. The prcess f develping human self-wrth and scial skills.
D. The pattern f lneliness, lwer self-wrth and further lneliness.
30. Wh expressed cncern that AI cmpaninship culd weaken human cnnectins?
A. Tny Presctt. B. Sherry Turkle.
C. Murali Draiswamy. D. Scarlett Jhanssn.

A. Culd AI cntribute t increased lneliness?

If a stranger kncked n yur dr asking fr using yur phne, wuld yu help? Hw abut lending them five dllars fr the bus, if they said they'd return and pay yu back?
Nwadays, many peple find it hard t trust strangers. A recent study fund that ur ability t trust strangers may be mre than just a scial r psychlgical characteristic—— it culd be rted in ur DNA. This is imprtant, as it turns ut that trusting peple might actually live lnger and healthier lives cmpared t mre skeptical(怀疑的) peple.
Tw main theries have appeared t explain why sme peple are mre trusting than thers. One suggests trust is a stable characteristic shaped by early life experiences. The ther thinks it's influenced by a persn's nging evaluatin f the scial envirnment. We can easily imagine that the answer t the questin “Wuld yu say that mst peple can be trusted?” wuld depend n whether yu'd been rbbed the day befre r if yu'd had yur missing wallet returned.
This is where the recent research cmes in. A prfessr f Lund University, Edgertn and his cwrkers have been ding research abut trust. In their mst recent study, invlving 33, 882 Danish bld dnrs, they fund a single gene (基因)—PLPP4, strngly assciated with the persnality f trusting thers, and that the PLPNP4 gene explained 6% f the difference in scial trust within the study ppulatin. If yu take tw peple wh have similar educatin and life experiences, this gene alne culd accunt fr 6% f the difference in hw much they trust thers.
They believe that the PLPP4 gene may smehw sften ur “fight-r-flight” survival respnse. If ur fight-r-flight system is less strng when we meet new peple, it makes sense that trusting thers culd have huge health benefits. Indeed, if trusting thers acts as smething against stress, it may lwer the risk f cardivascular (心血管的) disease.
As peple cntinue t uncver the mysteries f trust, ne thing is clear: understanding its genetic rts may hld the key t develping healthier cmmunities in the wrld.
32. What might affect peple's trust levels accrding t the tw main theries?
A. Childhd habits. B. Persnal abilities.
C. Scial experiences. D. Cmmunicatin skills.
33、What des the recent study fcus n?
A. The mental cause f trust.
B. The ways t develp survival ability.
C. The characteristics f different genes.
D. The cnnectin between trust and a gene.
34. What des the passage say abut trusting thers?
A. It culd bring health benefits.
B. It reduces the strng stress in wrk.
C. It helps t develp the wrld faster.
D. It causes quicker survival respnse.
35. What might be the best title fr the passage?
A、A Gene Influences Hw Trusting Yu Are
B. Experiences Make Yu Grw Dependable χ
C. A Link Between Bilgy and Scial Science
D. Theries That Explain Why Yu Are Trusted
