Led by Dr Alice Bridges and Lars Chittka, Prfessr f Sensry and Behaviural Eclgy at Queen Mary University f Lndn, the research team designed a tw-step puzzle bx requiring bumblebees t perfrm tw different actins in sequence (顺序) t get a sweet reward in the end. Training bees t d this was n easy task, and bees had t be helped alng by the additin f an extra reward alng the way. This reward was eventually taken away, and these demnstratr (示范者) bees later had t pen the whle bx befre getting their treat.
Dr Bridges stresses the newness f this study, “Other bees learned the whle sequence frm scial bservatin f these trained demnstratr bees, even withut ever experiencing the first step’s reward. But when we let ther bees attempt t pen the bx withut a trained bee t demnstrate the slutin, they didn’t manage t pen any at all.
This study shws that bumblebees have a level f scial learning which was thught t be exclusive t humans befre. They can share and develp behaviurs that are beynd their individual cgnitive abilities: an ability thught t frm the expansive, cmplex nature f human culture.
This research pens a new apprach t understanding animal intelligence and the evlutin f scial learning. It challenges lngstanding assumptins(设想) and paves the way fr further explratin f the cgnitive wnders hidden within the insect wrld, even suggesting the exciting pssibility f cumulative (累积的) culture, the gradual accumulatin(积累) f knwledge and skills ver generatins, amng seemingly simple creatures.
