One day in Brnx, a first-grade teacher sat dwn in a barbershp fr a haircut and ne f his students walked in, sat dwn, and started lking antsy. He thught t himself that it was a perfect pprtunity t practice reading, a thught that changed Alvin Irby’s life, and he’s filling many barbershps arund the US with free bks t trim back childhd illiteracy (文盲). His nn-prfit, Barbershp Bks, has delivered 50,000 free bks t mre than 200 barbershps in mainly black neighbrhds in 24 states, cnsidering the fact that in Black American cmmunities, barbershps are like cmmunity centers where peple gather naturally.
“S many kids assciate reading with smething yu d in r fr schl,” he said. “If the nly place a kid practices the pian is during a lessn, the prgress will be slw. Our prgram is abut getting kids t say three wrds: ‘I’m a reader.’”
Irby’s prgram may seem straightfrward but there’s a lt f thught behind it. He puts a clrful kid-sized bkshelf in each shp, making it inviting t children. The bks displayed are all carefully chsen based n recmmendatins frm his target audience. The bkshelves display the cvers f the bks rather than the spines, helping kids wh may be interested in reading seize the pprtunity fr themselves, whether they’re in the barber’s chair r they’re waiting n their dad r friend. And Irby invlves the barbers in his missin — training them t engage kids abut reading. “We want them t encurage kids t use the reading spaces,” he said. “Then they can talk t them abut hw they like reading, hw funny a bk was r tell them abut anther bk anther kid was reading.”
Denny Me was the first barber t wrk with Irby. Me had previusly ffered vide games at his Harlem shp, t bring in extra incme, but he was willing t quit that t help the cmmunity. “I decided t pay it frward by getting rid f the vide games, putting bks in here, just t get the kids’ minds ging,” he said. “Yu want t make an impact.”
“These bks, I wuld say, have pwer,” 8-year-ld by Chance said. That’s what keeps Irby mtivated. “I’m just excited that we get t create a safe space fr bys t d smething that’s really life changing,” he said. “That’s what I really believe reading is. It unlcks ptential.”
      4. What des the underlined wrd in paragraph 1 mst prbably mean?
      A. Restless.B. Serius.C. Relieved.D. Jyful.
      5. Why des the prgram appeal t children?

      C. Because it prtects children’s security.D. Because it cnsiders children’s preferences.
      6. What made Denny Me give up the vide games finally?
      A. That he wanted t attract mre custmers.B. That he wanted t make a difference.
      C. That he wanted t bring in mre mney.D. That he wanted t meet different demands.

Researchers frm the Technical University f Munich (TUM) and the University f Clgne (UC) in Germany have develped an AI-based learning system.
The idea is simple yet effective: a webcam (网络摄像头) tracks students’ eye mvements. Maike Schindler, a math prfessr frm the UC, and her team have designed hundreds f math tasks invlving basic math skills. Depending n the task, specific patterns appear, which are shwn digitally n a heat map, with red indicating areas where the children lk frequently and green shwing the areas where they lk nly briefly. Cnfident students quickly get t key prblem areas, while struggling nes ften lk aimlessly.
“Tracking eye mvements helps recgnize different learning strategies thrugh patterns and finally create detailed supprt reprts fr teachers,” says Maike Schindler. “The AI system srts the patterns. On the basis, the sftware selects tailred learning vides and exercises fr the pupil,” says rbtics prfessr Achim Lilienthal frm the TUM.
T develp the new eye-tracking technlgy, Prfessr Lilienthal has drawn n his rbtics research experience. In that wrk, he used eye trackers with a small human-like rbt named Na. It enables better cmmunicatin with humans. Hwever, these advanced systems with high accuracy cst many thusands f eurs.
T find a better slutin fr schls, the researchers cleverly mix technical experience with math knwledge. Instead f using high-end eye-trackers, their AI-driven apprach uses regular webcams and makes up fr lw accuracy thrugh AI imprvements. “By fcusing n prblem areas, the AI adapts the eye-tracking with the webcam, achieving accuracy cmparable t high-end tls,” prfessr Lilienthal says.
Germany’s Wulfen Cmprehensive Schl is the first t intrduce the system. A math test there shwed that abut ne-third f the new students struggled with basic math. With the AI system, ne teacher can nw supprt five students at nce — a significant imprvement ver traditinal ne-n-ne teaching. “As educatin faces teacher shrtages and increasing pressure t deal with individual learning styles, ur system fr prmting basic math skills is simply excellent supprt fr schls,” says Schindler.
      8. What is the functin f the heat map?
      A. Presenting students’ fcus areas.
      B. Measuring the difficulty f math tasks.
      C. Tracking the eye mvements f students.
      D. Cmparing students’ prblem-slving speeds.
      9. What des paragraph 3 mainly talk abut?
      A. The system’s advantages in recgnizing eye prblems.
      B. The system’s rle in supprting persnalized learning.
      C. The system’s challenges in tracking student behavir.
      D. The system’s prgress in upgrading specific patterns.
      10. Which best describes the AI-driven eye-tracking technlgy?
      A. Helpful but slw.B. Simple and relaxing.
      C. Creative but cstly.D. Affrdable and effective.
      11. What des Wulfen Cmprehensive Schl get frm the system?
      A. Reductin in teacher training.B. Adaptatin t learning needs.
      C. Inspiratin fr advanced math.D. Absence f human judgment.
      D
Warming seas acrss the glbe are endangering cral reefs (珊瑚礁), a key ecsystem that supprts marine life t live and thrive. As a pssible way t save them frm extinctin, scientists have recently frzen and revived grups f adult crals fr the first time, accrding t a recent study.
Freezing bilgical materials, r “crypreserving” them, refers t keeping them in a deep freeze fr lng perids withut affecting the cell’s viability (活性), accrding t the Science Times website.
This methd usually cls them t very lw temperatures, cmmnly t -196℃. Since cells wuld nrmally die at such a lw temperature due t the frmatin f ice inside, scientists need t mnitr the freezing rate and chse the freezing medium carefully.
Researchers in the US experimented with freezing pea-sized pieces f a cmmn cral in Hawaii. After remving the micrbes n the crals, they sealed the crals in metal cntainers filled with a chemical slutin that partially dehydrated (脱水) them and helped cntrl ice grwth.
When the crals reached a temperature f arund -200℃, the remaining water in the crals slidified int a glassy frm. The crals were still alive, with their life-driving functins becming extremely slw. After being crypreserved fr a few minutes, the researchers pulled the crals ut and placed them in warm water. In tw minutes, they started cnsuming xygen — a sign f them staying alive.
Previusly, researchers had already successfully crypreserved cral larvae (幼虫), accrding t a study in 2018. Hwever, the larvae can nly be cllected when crals lay eggs, which happens just a few nights each year. “That’s putting a lt f eggs in ne basket,” US marine scientist Liza Rger tld Science News.
This breakthrugh ffers mre hpe t the wrld’s crals, said Rger. Hwever, there’s mre wrk t be dne. A few days after thawing (解冻), the crals became “stressed ut” frm the prcess and were killed by the bacteria they nrmally live in harmny with. The researchers are wrking n using antibitics t help them survive fr a lnger perid f time.
      12. What is the purpse f the recent study?
      A. T bring dead crals back t life.B. T freeze and revive cral larvae.
      C. T find a way t preserve crals.D. T study the cnditins f cral grwth.
      13. What happened t the crals when they were crypreserved?
      A. They died fr the time being.B. Their life functins slwed dwn.
      C. They remained alive and unchanged.D. They fed n micrbes in the cntainers.
      14. What des Rger think abut crypreserving cral larvae?
      A. It is nt a reliable slutin.B. It needs a large number f eggs.
      C. It hlds prmise fr restring crals.D. It requires verly expensive technlgy.
      15. What issue d the researchers still need t apprach?
      A. Finding a suitable freezing medium.B. Identifying the bacteria n the crals.
      C. Expanding the cllectin f cral larvae.D. Maintaining the crals’ health after thawing.
