The wrld prduces arund 359 millin tns f plastics each year. Plastics are certainly a big prblem, but
they dn’t necessarily have t be. There are many ways we culd set plastics n a different lifecycle. One that I
have been wrking n is turning plastics int a hardy, reliable and sustainable building material.
Mst peple believe that plastics recycling is severely limited: nly a few types can be recycled at all. This is
unsurprising. The prprtin(比例)f plastics that are recycled is minimal. But all plymers(聚合物)are,
technlgically, recyclable. Sme f them can be used again and again t prduce the same gds. Sme can
technically be reprcessed int new materials fr different applicatins.
The prblem is that recycling much f this plastic waste is currently unprfitable. But the amunt f these
materials all ver the wrld is large and keeps n grwing. What if this plastic waste culd be used t prduce
smething useful t the sciety? Many universities and business peple are attempting t d this. Mst slutins
target mixed plastic waste and suggest applicatins different frm the riginal nes. Fr example, several grups
have develped building materials made f plastic waste. Plastics are strng, durable, waterprf, lightweight and
recyclable—all key prperties fr cnstructin materials. S what if all f this plastic waste culd be turned int
building materials fr lw-incme ppulatins? Existing initiatives are prmising, but nt yet reprducible n an

industrial scale.
I study plastic waste with the aim f finding interesting ways t remve it frm the envirnment. Frm
agricultural waste t cncrete waste, mixed with recycled plastics, there are many ways t btain materials t
prduce bricks and ther useful elements fr buildings. S perhaps plastics are nt necessarily the prblem. They
can be part f a pathway twards a mre sustainable way f living.
28. What’s peple’s cmmn belief abut plastic recycling?
A. Almst all plastic waste can be reused. B. The methds are quite limited.

B. Recycling plastics desn’t make mney nw.
C. Plastic buildings have been largely cnstructed.
D. New applicatins f plastics haven’t been fund.
30. Why can plastics make gd building materials?
A. They can resist water and wn’t last lng.
B. They can be reprduced in large quantity.
C. They satisfy the needs f lw-incme peple.
D. They meet mst demands f building materials.
31. What’s the authr’s attitude t plastic recycling?
A. Psitive. B. Anxius.
C Dubtful. D. Critical.

The needs f plus-size cnsumers have lng been the elephant in the rm f the fashin industry until bdy
psitivity and fat acceptance mvements prmted the slgan that large-bdied peple are nt thse wh are left
behind. This size-inclusive(尺码包容)trend has becme s ppular that it is influencing mainstream culture. As a
result, fashin brands have finally decided t extend their size ranges. In 2022, the plus-size market grew twice as
fast as the standard size market in bth Nrth America and the UK.
Yet, many cnsumers say fashin brands bradening their ranges are nt truly inclusive. “Inclusive sizing
means that all bdies are included in fashin, nt just the nes wh fit in standard sizes,” says Marie Suthard
第 8页/共 14页
Ospina, a UK-based plus-size girl. “Hwever, what many designers d right nw is pick a number that they think is
big enugh t include plus sizes and stp. This is even mre disrespectful.”
Researchers als nte that sme brands are just taking advantage f the trend. “Brands that used t prmte
s-called perfect bdies in their advertisements are nw trying t get in n the trend by adding a few sizes. It desn’
t feel like they really care abut plus-size peple,” says Tm Burgess, analyst in fashin industry. “If brands cared
abut large-bdied cnsumers, then it wuldn’t have taken until nw t acknwledge that they exist,” he says. “It
gives the impressin that cmpanies are just trying t gain a share f the market withut a real cmmitment t the
cmmunity.”
The fashin industry must g beynd merely prducing clthing in a range f sizes if they hpe t succeed
with a bdy-diverse wrld. The whle industry has t cnnect n a persnal level with cnsumers. That invlves
shwing shppers that they are seen, understd and imprtant t brands. “Cnsumers care abut values, and s
they want t buy frm brands that reflect the values they believe in. Everyne shuld enjy the same range f
fashin ptins,” says Ludvica Cesare, prfessr f marketing at the Cllege f Business in the US.
32. What d the underlined wrds “the elephant in the rm” mean in the first paragraph?
A. The ht issue that is valued. B. The bvius truth that is ignred.
C. The imprtant principle that is recgnized. D. The cmmn phenmenn that is criticized.
33. Why d cnsumers say fashin brands are nt truly inclusive?
A. They pick sizes randmly. B. They ffer limited plus sizes.
C. They treat designers disrespectfully. D. They haven’t bradened standard sizes.
34. What is researchers’ attitude twards sme brands?
A. Appreciative. B. Objective. C. Indifferent. D. Critical.
35. What des the last paragraph imply?
A. All buyers deserve fashin that fits their figure.
B. Cnsumers prefer brands with persnalized values.
C. Brands shuld catch up with the size-inclusive trend.
D. A gd brand image is critical in the fashin industry.
