When yu see smene absrbed in a highbrw nvel n the train r psing with a philsphical vlume n scial media, yu shuldn’t autmatically assume they are reading the bk.
It’s knwn as “perfrmative reading” as the “reader” wants everyne t knw they read, wrte Alaina Dempuls in The Guardian. They’re signaling they have the “taste and attentin span” t pick up a physical bk.
The phenmenn has its rts in 2021, when a bm in bk clubs led by celebrities alng with “BkTk”, the sectin f TikTk dedicated t prmting and discussing cmmercial fictin, turned favred bks int a “trend-driven accessry (配饰)”, said Sarah Manavis in The New Statesman.
BkTk is seen as perfrmative, with trendy bks ging viral nt because f the quality f the literature
but because it suggests an increasingly fashinable, intellectual-lking style. And when reading becmes a cmpetitin, with cuntless users shwing ff abut having read mre than 35 bks in a single mnth, suppsedly, quality takes a backseat t demnstrating yurself t be a vracius reader.
Scial psturing thrugh bks isn’t new. What is new is the uniquely unaplgetic way scial media “rubber-stamps” the idea f bks as an accessry, rather than an art. And there’s a danger it culd lead t publishers fcusing their effrts n bks that are “feed-friendly”.
But the incnvenient truth is that the virality f literature has led t an uptick in bk sales. In 2023, 669 millin physical bks were sld, the highest verall level ever recrded, alng with an increase f visits t
      UK libraries.
“One f life’s simplest pleasures remains falling int a stry and tuning the wrld ut, withut wrrying abut what smene’s ging t think f yu”, said Dempuls. Enjy the stry. Many peple are still ding exactly that. S, rather than “finger-wagging” abut perfrmative reading, next time yu see smene with a bk at a cffee shp r the park, just leave them alne, because this is nt a perfrmance fr yu — they’re simply enjying the mment.
Why d sme peple engage in perfrmative reading?
T ppularize bk clubs.B. T prmte reading habits.
      C. T imprve their scial image.D. T stress the imprtance f literature.
What des the underlined wrd “vracius” in paragraph 4 prbably mean?
      A. Slw.B. Eager.C. Selective.D. Occasinal.
What risk des turning bks int accessries create?
Online reading culd take ver.B. Physical bk sales will decline.
      C. Bk clubs may becme exclusive.D. Meaningful cntent might get sidelined.
Accrding t Dempuls, thse wh read in public shuld be .
urged t read privatelyB. guided t select better materials
      C. discuraged frm psting nlineD. respected withut being disturbed

When it cmes t navigating (导航) areas, past studies shwed that the abilities dn’t truly kick in until twelve. Hwever, a new study has revealed that children aged 5 can find their way arund large spaces.
The researchers invlved with this study previusly cncentrated n three regins f the adult brain that help navigatin: PPA, which lets us recgnize places and assign them t different categries, RSC, which maps these places within a larger space and OPA, which keeps us frm running int bjects. In 2024, they fund that the system assciated with OPA desn’t fully develp until the age f eight. Hwever, they therized that yunger children must still be able t create a map f their surrundings, even befre they can walk well.
The new study cnfirmed that RSC is already well-develped in children yunger than eight. The results cme frm an interesting experiment invlving five-year-ld participants wh became familiar with a virtual lcatin called “Tiny Twn” full f entertaining landmarks like ice cream stres, playgrunds and fire statins. “We want t get answers, but it’s als imprtant that participants have a gd time and a gd impressin f science,” said Yaelan Jung, first authr f the study.
Then the researchers cnducted fMRI scans (磁共振扫描) n the children, during which they participated
in a game-like task where they were shwn images frm Tiny Twn and pressed a buttn if the images accurately related. Data frm the scans prved that the children were able t create a map in their minds, using RSC in their brains t facilitate navigatin in larger spaces.
The next step, the researchers say, is t lk int the brain develpment f tddlers (学步孩童) with
cleverer strategies. “It’s exciting t explre hw humans use different parts f the brain fr cmplex behavirs and hw that changes with age and experiences,” Jung said in a press release. “We’re als laying the grundwrk fr clinical applicatins.”
Accrding t the new study, why can five-year-lds navigate large areas?
They can mentally map a large envirnment.B. Their OPA regin has develped t the full.
      C. Their PPA regin helps them avid bjects.D. They can walk well by recgnizing places.
Why did the researchers design Tiny Twn?
T cnfirm the accuracy f fMRI scans.B. T imprve kids’ scientific cmpetence.
      C. T make the experiment engaging fr kids.D. T adjust kids’ emtin befre the experiment.
What are Yaelan Jung’s wrds in the last paragraph mainly abut?
Influence f research strategies.B. Pssible directin fr further study.
      C. Demand fr a larger sample size.D. Slid evidence f the findings.
What can be a suitable tile fr the text?

      C. Three Regins: Cre Parts fr Mapping PlacesD. Tiny Twn: A Key t Unlcking Brain Secrets

During puberty (青春期), yur bdy ges thrugh many changes, and yu start frming a bdy image
      — hw yu see, think, and feel abut yur bdy’s size, shape, and weight, r specific features like yur nse.
32 Fr instance, yu may believe yur nse is t big r t small, even thugh it lks perfectly nrmal.
33 One majr influence is peer pressure. Yur friends might make casual jkes abut yur appearance, r yu might cmpare yurself t them and feel they lk better. Such experiences can harm the way yu view yurself. Anther pwerful influence is the media, which ften prmtes a narrw, ideal bdy type. Fr example, if fair skin is prtrayed as beautiful, yu may feel insecure if yu dn’t match that ideal.
Develping a negative bdy image can lead t unhealthy behavirs, such as extreme dieting, verexercising, r even risky plastic surgeries. 34 When yu fcus t much n appearance, yu may frget t appreciate ther great things abut yurself, such as yur talents and persnality.
T build a psitive bdy image, it’s essential t remember that n perfect bdy exists, as beauty standards are always changing. Mdels and celebrities may appear flawless in the media, but much f their appearance is due t makeup, angles, lighting, and editing. 35
Rather than fcusing n appearances, value peple fr their true selves. By surrunding yurself with psitive influences and aviding cmments n lks, yu can redirect yur attentin frm self-criticism.
36 Over time, yu’ll build inner cnfidence and develp a healthier, mre accepting relatinship with yur bdy.
Many factrs shape yur bdy image.
It als lwers yur verall life satisfactin.
Hwever, yur true beauty lies within yur heart.
External judgement can be a duble-edged swrd.
Withut these tricks, they are just as “imperfect” as everyne else.
Surprisingly, bdy image is shaped mre by yur thughts than by reality.
This shift enables yu t recgnize and celebrate yur talents and strengths.

      Dear Tm,
      Yurs, Li Hua
I’m glad t hear that yu will start learning Chinese! It’s a fascinating and beautiful language, thugh yu may face sme challenges at the beginning. I’d like t share a few suggestins that might help yu n yur learning jurney.
T begin with, Chinese characters are very different frm English letters, s it takes time and patience t remember their shapes and meanings. In additin, tnes are crucial in prnunciatin—the same syllable with different tnes can mean cmpletely different things.
Here are a few hints that might make yur learning easier. First, start with pinyin, as it will give yu a slid fundatin fr prnunciatin. Once yu feel cmfrtable, gradually mve n t learning simple characters. Secnd, try t immerse yurself in the language by watching Chinese mvies, listening t sngs, r even chatting with native speakers. This will make learning bth effective and enjyable. Finally, dn’t be afraid f making mistakes — they are a natural and necessary part f learning. Remember, practice makes perfect!
Learning Chinese may take time, but if yu stay curius and keep practicing, yu’ll surely make great prgress. I’m cnfident that yu’ll fall in lve with the language and the culture behind it.
      Best wishes,
      Li Hua

By the end f the term, I hpe yu’ll cme t share my belief that frmal writing always requires revisin. Sme students may have the mistaken idea that revisin means simply making crrectins in spelling and grammar. I call that prf reading.
What I expect yu t d is t revise, evaluate and imprve the verall effectiveness f yur paper. But hw can yu tell if yur paper is effective? Well, fr example, start by asking yurself these questins: Is the tpic narrw enugh t be fully discussed within the given length? Is the main idea clear? Are they supprted by specific details and examples? Des the paper mve smthly frm ne idea t the next?
Yu’ll need enugh time t make big changes, meaning yu might have t make many adjustments befre yur paper becmes very clear t the reader. S I expect yu t submit the first draft f each paper tw weeks befre the final due date. This timeline allws me t prvide feedback and return it t yu in time fr revisins.
Then yu can submit a final draft fr grading. This prcess may seem like a great deal f truble at first, but I think yu will find it valuable. In fact, after cmpleting this curse, I dubt yu’ll ever submit a term paper withut careful revisin.
