In the mid-20th century, maps f the wrld shwed cntinents surrunded by vast, featureless ceans. Beneath the waves, the cean flr was largely unknwn. That all changed thanks t the wrk f Marie Tharp, a pineering cartgrapher and gelgist.
In the 1940s, few wmen were accepted in science. Tharp, hwever, was determined t make her mark. She partnered with ceangrapher Bruce Heezen, wh cllected snar data frm ships that crssed the Atlantic Ocean. The data was just a string f numbers and graphs – withut smene t translate it int a visual frmat, it was difficult t interpret. That was where Tharp came in. She began pltting thusands f data pints, a painstaking prcess that required a mix f mathematical skill and artistic intuitin.
In the prcess f her mapping, Tharp discvered the central valley f the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, a place where the cean flr was pulling apart. This was exactly the kind f evidence that culd supprt the cntrversial thery f cntinental drift, which was largely dismissed by the scientific cmmunity at the time.
Cnvincing the scientific cmmunity wuld prve difficult, since many gelgists had lng believed that the cean flr was flat and featureless. Tharp and Heezen turned t art t create visual representatins f the cean flr. This prduced stunning maps that brught Tharp’s findings t life in a way that n scientific paper culd. The beauty f these maps captured the imaginatins f scientists and the public alike. Tharp’s maps, and the evidence they prvided, became a crnerstne f the mdern understanding f gelgy. Her wrk prved that the cean flr was nt static but a dynamic, changing landscape.
Fr many years, Tharp’s cntributins were vershadwed by her male clleagues – it was Bruce Heezen’s name that ften appeared n scientific papers. Tharp wrked behind the scenes, receiving little recgnitin fr her grundbreaking wrk.
Tday, satellite and snar technlgy enable us t map the cean flr with incredible precisin, but nne f this wuld have been pssible withut Tharp’s pineering effrts.
What underlying reasn mtivated Tharp’s cmmitment t science?
A. A request frm Heezen.B. A need t stre snar data.
C. A belief in cntinental drift.D. A desire t establish herself.
Why was Tharp’s discvery f the central valley significant?
It backed a then-dismissed thery.
It shwed snar data was unreliable.
It cnfirmed the cean flr was flat.
It questined a nce-ppular technlgy.
Hw did Tharp and Heezen make Tharp’s findings widely accepted?
By giving public lectures.B. By visualising data pints.
C. By cnsulting gelgy experts.D. By publishing scientific papers.
Hw was Tharp’s wrk treated by her cntempraries?
It was credited t thers.B. It was viewed as accidental.
C. It was finally acknwledged.D. It was ignred as lacking in evidence.

Albert Einstein’s 1915 masterpiece The Fundatin f the General Thery f Relativity is the first and still the best intrductin t the subject, but it prbably wuldn’t be publishable in a scientific jurnal tday.
Why nt? After all, it undubtedly wuld pass the tests f crrectness and significance. And while it’s believed that the paper was incmprehensible t its first readers, in fact many papers in theretical physics are much mre difficult. As the physicist Richard Feynman wrte, “There was a time when the newspapers said that nly 1.2 men understd the thery f relativity, which is nt true. After reading the paper, a lt f peple understd the thery f relativity in sme way r ther, certainly mre than 1.2.”
N, the prblem is its style. It starts with a leisurely philsphical discussin f space and time and then cntinues with an explanatin f knwn mathematics. Thse tw sectins, which wuld be cnsidered extraneus tday, take up half the paper. Wrse, there are zer citatins f previus scientists’ wrk, nr are there any graphs. Thse features might make a paper nt even get past the first editrs.
A similar prcess f prfessinalisatin has transfrmed ther parts f the scientific landscape. Requests fr research time at majr labratries are mre strictly structured. And anything invlving wrk with human bjects, r putting instruments in space, invlves piles f paperwrk.
We see it als in the Regenern Science Talent Search, the Nbel Prize f high schl science cmpetitins. In the early decades f its histry, the winning prjects were usually the srt f clever but naive, amateurish effrts ne might expect f talented beginners wrking n their wn. Tday, plished wrk cming ut f internships at established labratries is the nrm.
These prfessinalising tendencies are a natural cnsequence f the explsive grwth f mdern science. Standardisatin and system make it easier t manage the rapid flw f papers, applicatins and peple. But there are serius dwnsides. A lt f unprductive effrt ges int jumping thrugh bureaucratic hps (繁文缛节).
Of curse, Einstein wuld have fund his way t meeting mdern standards and publishing his results.
Its scientific cre wuldn’t have changed, but the paper might nt be the same taste t read.
Accrding t Richard Feynman, which statement abut Einstein’s 1915 paper is true?
It attracted few prfessinals.B. It turned ut t be cmprehensible.
C. It needed further imprvement.D. It was a classic in theretical physics.
What des the underlined wrd “extraneus” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A. Unrealistic.B. Imprecise.C. Unattractive.D. Irrelevant.
Accrding t the authr, what is affected as mdern science develps?
The selectin f yung talents.B. The evaluatin f labratries.
C. The principle f scientific research.D. The applicatin f research findings.
Which wuld be the best title fr this passage?
Hw t write quality papers?B. Will science be prfessinalised?
C. Culd Einstein get published tday?D. Hw will mdern science make advances?
D
With self-driving cars gaining ppularity in tday’s autmbile landscape, the issue f legal liability (法律责任) in the case f an accident has becme mre relevant.
Research in human-vehicle interactin has shwn even systems designed t autmate driving are far frm being errr-prf. Besides, recent evidence pints t drivers’ limited understanding f what these systems can and cannt d as a cntributing factr t system misuse. A recent study tackles the issue f ver-trusting drivers and the resulting system misuse frm a legal viewpint. It lks at what the manufacturers f self-driving cars shuld legally d t ensure that drivers understand hw t use the vehicles apprpriately. One slutin suggested in the study invlves requiring buyers t sign end-user license agreements (EULAs), similar t the terms and cnditins that require agreement when using new sftware prducts. But this is far frm ideal. The agreement may nt prvide enugh infrmatin t the driver, leading t cnfusin abut the nature f the requests fr agreement and their implicatins. Further, mst end users dn’t read EULAs. A 2017 study shws 91 percent f peple agree t them withut reading. Amng yung
peple, 97 percent agree withut reviewing the terms.
The issue is that, unlike using a smartphne app, perating a car has intrinsic and serius safety risks, whether the driver is human r sftware. And human drivers need t cnsent (准许) t take respnsibility fr the utcmes f the sftware and hardware.
“Warning fatigue” and distracted driving are als causes fr cncern. Fr example, a driver, annyed after receiving cntinuus warnings, culd decide t just ignre the message. Or, if the message is presented while the vehicle is in mtin, it culd represent a distractin. Given these limitatins and cncerns, even if this mde f btaining cnsent is t mve frward, it likely wn’t fully prtect autmakers frm their legal liability, shuld the system malfunctin r an accident ccur.
Driver training fr self-driving vehicles can help ensure that drivers fully understand system capabilities and limitatins. This needs t ccur beynd the vehicle purchase. Recent evidence shws even relying n the infrmatin prvided by the seller is nt ging t answer many questins. All f this cnsidered, the rad frward fr self-driving cars is nt ging t be a smth ride after all.
What can we learn frm recent studies in human-vehicle interactin?
Autmatic driving systems are nt immune t errrs.
Driverless vehicles may be misused by sme peple.
Self-driving car makers aren’t aware f the legal matters.
Drivers have limited knwledge f the autmatic systems.
What is the prblem with requiring buyers t sign EULAs?
Drivers aren’t willing t take respnsibility.
End users find the terms cmplex t interpret.
The infrmatin prvided may cause cnfusin.
Mst users sign them withut reading the terms.
What wuld drivers d when they suffer frm “warning fatigue”?
Be distracted easily by the message.B. Rest a while t avid fatigue driving.
C. Waste n time keeping the car mving.D. Take n actin despite repeated warnings.
Which wuld be the best title fr the passage?
Hw Can We Reduce Self-Driving Risks?
Wh’s t Blame if a Self-Driving Car Crashes?
Are Self-Driving Systems Truly Safe and Legal?
Where Will the Human-Vehicle Interactin Lead?

Every animal sleeps, but the reasn fr this has remained fggy. When lab rats are nt allwed t sleep, they die within a mnth. 36
One idea is that sleep helps us strengthen new memries. 37 We knw that, while awake, fresh memries are recrded by reinfrcing cnnectins between brain cells, but the memry prcesses that take place while we sleep have been unclear.
Supprt is grwing fr a thery that sleep evlved s that cnnectins between neurns (神经元) in
the brain can be weakened vernight, making rm fr fresh memries t frm the next day. 38 Nw we have the mst direct evidence yet that he is right. 39 The synapses in the mice taken
at the end f a perid f sleep were 18 per cent smaller than thse taken befre sleep, shwing that the cnnectins between neurns weaken while sleeping.
If Tnni’s thery is right, it wuld explain why, when we miss a night’s, we find it harder the next day t cncentrate and learn new infrmatin – ur brains may have smaller rm fr new experiences.
Their research als suggests hw we may build lasting memries ver time even thugh the synapses becme thinner. The team discvered that sme synapses seem t be prtected and stayed the same size.
40 “Yu keep what matters,” Tnni says.
We shuld als try t sleep well the night befre.
It’s as if the brain is preserving its mst imprtant memries.
Similarly, when peple g fr a few days withut sleeping, they get sick.
The prcesses take place t stp ur brains becming laded with memries.
That’s why students d better in tests if they get a chance t sleep after learning.
“Sleep is the price we pay fr learning,” says Giuli Tnni, wh develped the idea.
Tnni’s team measured the size f these cnnectins, r synapses, in the brains f 12 mice.

Oh, and yu shuld knw that Mm was a night wl, up late watching a late mvie r a wrestling match.
One mre thing abut my dad. He was clur-blind. That usually desn’t matter. And he was a fairly cnservative kind f persn. Fr instance, he bught ur new hme ut in the cuntry and bjected immediately t the stucc (灰泥) being a pale peach clur. Way t “flashy” fr Dad. He hired a painter t cver up all that peach with a nice, nt-flashy grey. Dad was fnd f grey anyway.
And s, we arrived at the Saturday mrning when Dad sprang ut f bed as bright-eyed as ever, felt restless, and lked arund fr smething that needed ding. Mm was sund asleep, as usual. My brther and I slept in a bit. There was nbdy arund t keep an eye n Dad and whatever he decided t d next.
S, Dad decided that the prch (门廊) n ur newly grey huse needed a fresh cat f paint. He
headed ff t the hardware stre t get paint and painting supplies. He did nt tell any f us. Nr did he invite any f us alng.
We’ve never been sure what happened at the hardware stre. Did he ask fr advice? Did he study clur samples? Did anther shpper help him chse? Wh knws? But we’re all pretty sure that Dad had n clue what clur he was painting the wden prch. My brther and I wke up, wndered where Dad was, and went lking fr him.
