But sn, what began as the ne tree Felix planted at his schl turned int several thusands, then several hundreds f thusands, then, within a few years, 1 millin.
But the campaign — and the gal — didn’t stp there. It has sprung up in many cuntries acrss the wrld. Last autumn, it reached Kauã’s classrm. What’s happening in the envirnment is unpredictable. It’s a scary time t be a kid. But Kauã desn’t think it has t be.
The planet will find a way if peple can learn t wrk tgether, he said. It is an idea he is trying t instill (逐渐灌输) by giving regular envirnmental speeches and planting trees.

Mst highly skilled fields have rude names fr beginners. And yet there has never been a better time t be a beginner. Learning platfrms such as Cursera Skillshare and Duling sell yu an experience that yu can fit arund yur busy life, achieving mastery in a shrt time.
In this bk Beginners, Tm Vanderbilt jins the grwing army f beginners. Stuck in mid-career grwth, he decides t spend a year learning new skills. He hires a singing teacher and jins the Britpp Chir. He takes up drawing, then surfing. He learns t juggle (玩杂耍). With the help f a jeweler, he even makes his wn wedding ring. Nne f these attempts turn int life-changing passins. They are simply dne fr fun.
The mtivatin behind all this cmes frm Vanderbilt’s experience f parenthd, which can nly be learned in the ding f it. All parents are beginners, and beginner teachers, clumsily (笨拙地) passing n knwledge t their children. As he watches his daughter effrtlessly pick up hw t swim r play chess, Vanderbilt wrries that he has left it t late. “It’s hard t be ld and bad at smething,” as a friend, returning t swimming in middle age, puts it.
Luckily, he achieves satisfying results with relatively little painful effrt. Peple appreciate his inexpert but imprved singing because mst peple can’t sing very well. The title f ne academic paper he cites — “Imprecise singing is widespread” — says it all. The acid (讽刺的) test is “Happy Birthday”, the mst familiar sng in the language and yet nt easy t sing because it spans (跨越) an ctave (八度音阶) and mves up and dwn it dramatically.
In a wrld where apps cnstantly rate us and measure ur perfrmance, s that learning anything becmes anther frm f wrk, we shuld enjy the prcess mre and wrry less abut the prduct. All Vanderbilt achieves in the end is a basic skill in varius unrelated activities. But it has brught him “an enrmus and almst frgtten kind f pleasure”. This bk cnveys that pleasure and is itself a pleasure t read.
8. What mtivates Vanderbilt’s passin fr learning new skills?
A. His friend’s swimming cmeback.B. His experience f being a parent.
C. His daughter’s advice n trying new things.D. His hpe fr changing the views f beginners.
9. Why des the authr mentin the sng “Happy Birthday”?
A. T indicate the imprtance f repetitin in singing.
B. T draw attentin t its ppularity arund the wrld.
C. T prve its effectiveness in testing musical memry.
D. T shw the difficulty in singing even well-knwn sngs well.
10. What des the authr stress in the last paragraph?
A. The need t master varius unrelated skills.
B. The pleasure btained frm reading a bk.
C. The imprtance f enjying the learning prcess.
D. The significance f gaining recgnitin fr ne’s effrts.
11. What is the text?
A. A news reprt.B. A bk review.
C. A career guide.D. A research article.
D
Crws (乌鸦) can use tls and perfrm basic statistics, and they cntinue t surprise us. Earlier this year, a team f researchers frm the University f Bristl fund that the hded crw, which has a grey bdy and black tail and head feathers (羽毛), is able t memrize the shape and size f an bject after it is taken away and cnstruct ne like it. This kind f actin requires the ability t frm a mental template, which is basically an image in the mind f what a particular bject lks like, even when that bject is nt present. Mental templates allw animals t create tls, which can be used t get fd r make a strnger nest, bth eventually leading t a better chance f survival.
Fr their study, Sarah Jelbert and her cwrkers first trained three hded crws t recgnize pieces f paper f different sizes and clrs. T d this, they expsed the birds t “template” pieces f paper in different clrs and sizes fr several minutes befre remving them and then rewarded the birds fr drpping small pieces that matched these templates int a lng narrw pening. The crws were next given the pprtunity t make versins f these bjects in exchange fr a reward. The researchers fund that all three crws made bjects that matched the riginal template bject they had been rewarded fr in bth clr and size.
“Unlike humans, wh regularly cpy each ther’s behavir, we dn’t have much evidence that crws will watch each ther and cpy what anther crw is ding,” Jelbert says. Hwever, yung crws ften steal their parents’ tls. S it’s pssible that these crws learn hw t make different types f tls frm experience, stealing their parents’ tls, using them t remember what these tls lk like, and then trying t create smething similar, Jelbert believes.
12. Which f the fllwing best illustrates a mental template?
A. A mnkey swinging frm branch t branch.B. A cat getting back the fd it hid.
C. A crw sleeping in its nest.D. A dg playing with a ball.
13. What did the crws d in the study?
A. They perfrmed basic statistics.B. They were trained t d magic tricks.
C. They matched and reprduced bjects.D. They bserved and cpied ne anther.
14. What can we infer frm yung crws’ stealing incidents?
A. These are scial mtivatins.B. They may fall int an annying habit.
C. They cme int cnflict with their parents.D. These are pprtunities fr acquiring skills.
15. What can be a suitable title fr the text?
A Crws cmmunicate in a unique languageB. Hded crws use mre tls than ther birds
C Crws are even smarter than we thughtD. Hded crws identify sizes and clrs with ease
