The classic 1951 science fictin film The Day the Earth Std Still includes an impressive
character — a frightening rbt (Grt) whse terrible actins are under cntrl nly when he is rdered, “Klaatu barada nikt”. What des this mean? I dn’t knw. But when I verhear my students speaking t each ther, I am ften similarly cnfused.
I teach at a university. One f the “prblems” is that as the years pass, I get lder, but my students remain the same age — 18 t 22. Early n, when I was in my 20s and 30s, this wasn’t an issue, as we were clse enugh in age t speak the same language. But lately I have becme well aware that a language ship seems t have sailed, and I am nt n bard.
Let me make it clear by using an example: Recently, when I walked int my class, my students were chatting happily with each ther. One f their cmments caught my ear: “Venm it t me.” I had n idea what “Venm” meant, s I asked. The gd-natured students were happy t explain it t me, and in return I ndded with an awkward expressin, as if I shuld have knwn better.
I went hme that evening, absrbed in that mment f nncmprehensin (不理解). I am nt against change, but I am uncmfrtable with change when its pace has me hanging n by my fingernails. If I were t awaken frm a five-year nap, I’d have n idea what peple were talking abut. I just wuldn’t understand the language.
Their willingness t explain their wrds t me is a great cmfrt, and I cngratulate myself n at least having interest in what they’re talking abut, as well as n my ability — fr the mst part — t understand their explanatins.
But what will happen if my interest wanes and the language ship finally disappears ver the
hrizn? The answer, t me, is clear: Klaatu barada nikt.

Frm Mzart t Metallica, tns f peple enjy listening t varius types f music while they paint, write, r draw. Mst believe that music helps increase creativity, but an internatinal study cnducted by English and Swedish researchers is challenging that view. The study results were eched by scientists frm Lancaster University, and the University f Gavle, saying their findings shw music actually weakens creativity.
T reach their cnclusins (结论), researchers had vlunteers cmplete verbal (口头的) prblems designed t inspire creativity while sitting in a quiet rm, and then again while music played in the backgrund. They fund that backgrund music significantly weakened the vlunteers’ ability t cmplete tasks cnnected with verbal creativity. The team als tested
backgrund nises like thse cmmnly heard in a library, but fund that such nises had n influence n subjects’ creativity.
The tasks were simple wrd games. Fr example, vlunteers were given three wrds, such as dress, rise, and flwer. Then, they were asked t find a single wrd cnnected with all three that culd be cmbined (结合) t frm a cmmn phrase r wrd. The single wrd, in this case, wuld be “sun” (sundress, sunrise, sunflwer). Vlunteers cmpleted the tasks in either a quiet rm, r while listening t tw different types f music: rck music r light music
“We fund strng evidence f weakened perfrmance when playing backgrund music in cmparisn t quiet backgrund cnditins,” says c-authr D. Neil McLatchie f Lancaster University. He and his clleagues find that music negatively influences the verbal wrking memry prcesses f the brain, preventing creativity. Als, as far as the library backgrund nises having seemingly (似乎) n effect, the study’s authrs believe that was the case because library nises create a “regular state” envirnment that desn’t affect cncentratin.
“T cnclude, the findings here challenge the ppular view that music increases creativity, and instead shw that music, whatever type it is, is always a disadvantage fr creative perfrmance in prblem slving,” the study reads.
What des the underlined wrd “eched” in Paragraph 1 mean?
      ChallengedB.AcceptedC.DubtedD.Heard
What were the vlunteers asked t d in the study?
T play music.B.T cmbine given wrds.
C.T create new wrds.D.T cnnect wrds with music.
What can we infer frm the study?
Quiet backgrund inspires creativity best. B.Library nise des n harm t creativity. C.Music has a bad effect n language ability.D.Music types matter in creative perfrmance.
Which is the main idea f the passage?
Quiet Envirnments Prevent Cncentratin. B.Backgrund Nise Affects Cncentratin. C.Cmpsing Music Weakens Creativity.
      D.Listening t Music Reduces Creativity.

a sedentary r less active lifestyle.
T study this, his team used data frm nearly 25, 000 adults wh were nn-exercisers. Withut these data, it was almst impssible t cntinue the study. Over the curse f seven days,
they used machine learning tls t determine whether a persn was either sedentary, standing, walking, r ding intense activities like running during repeated 10-secnd windws. The researchers als divided any mvement int light, middle, r high intensity. Then, fr the next seven years, they recrded which study participants died and what caused the death.
The team fund that peple wh did at least fur ne-t-tw-minute high intensity physical activities every day had a nearly 40 percent less risk f dying frm cancer and a rughly 49 percent wer chance f dying frm a cardivascular (心血管的) disease. Mre buts f such strng activity meant greater prtectin frm death risks, Stamatakis says, “The mre, the better.”
What did the recent study find?
An inactive lifestyle is harmful but hard t change.
Mre physical exercises can make yu mre active.

The classic 1951 science fictin film The Day the Earth Std Still includes an impressive character — a frightening rbt (Grt) whse terrible actins are under cntrl nly when he is rdered, “Klaatu barada nikt”.

根据第一段中“What des this mean? I dn’t knw. But when I verhear my students speaking t each ther, I am ften similarly cnfused.(这是什么意思?我不知道。但当我无意中听到学生们互相交谈时, 我也常常会感到困惑)”和第二段中“But lately I have becme well aware that a language ship seems t have sailed, and I am nt n bard.(但最近我清楚地意识到,一艘语言之船似乎已经起航,而我却没有登船)”可知,作者可能遇到了语言障碍。
根据第二段中“One f the “prblems” is that as the years pass, I get lder, but my students remain the same age — 18 t 22. Early n, when I was in my 20s and 30s, this wasn’ t an issue, as we were clse enugh in age t speak the same language. 推理判断题。根据第四段中“I am nt against change, but I am uncmfrtable with change when its pace has me hanging n by my fingernails. If I were t awaken frm a five-year nap, I’d have n idea what peple were talking abut. 化太快了,让自己无所适从。故选 D。
词句猜测题。根据划线词上一段“I cngratulate myself n at least having interest in what they’re talking abut, as well as n my ability — fr the mst part — t understand their explanatins.(我庆幸自己至少还对他们谈论的内容感兴趣,也庆幸自己多半能听懂他们的解释)”及划线词前的 But 可知,此处与前文构成转折关系,(但如果我的兴趣减弱了,语言之船最终消失在地平线上,会发生什么呢?

Als, as far as the library backgrund nises

“T cnclude, the findings here challenge the ppular view that music increases creativity, and instead shw that music, whatever type it is, is always a disadvantage fr creative perfrmance in prblem slving,” the study reads.

What can we infer frm the study?
Quiet backgrund inspires creativity best. B.Library nise des n harm t creativity. C.Music has a bad effect n language ability.D.Music types matter in creative perfrmance.
Which is the main idea f the passage?
Quiet Envirnments Prevent Cncentratin. B.Backgrund Nise Affects Cncentratin.
