Researchers in the field f psychlgy have fund that ne f the best ways t make an imprtant decisin, such as chsing a university t attend r a business t invest in, invlves the utilizatin f a decisin wrksheet. Psychlgists wh study ptimizatin cmpare actual decisins made by peple with theretical ideal decisins t see hw similar they are. Supprters f the wrksheet prcedure believe that it will yield ptimal, that is, the best decisins. Althugh there are several variatins n the exact frmat that wrksheet can take, they are all similar in their essential aspects. Wrksheets require defining the prblem in a clear and cncise way and then listing all pssible slutins t the prblem. Next, the relevant cnsideratins that will be affected by each decisin are listed, and the relative imprtance f each cnsideratin r cnsequence is determined. Each cnsideratin is assigned a numerical value t reflect its relative imprtance. A decisin is mathematically calculated by adding these values tgether. The alternative with the highest number f pints emerges as the best decisin.
Since mst imprtant prblems are multifaceted (多层面的), there are several alternatives t chse frm, each with unique advantages and disadvantages. One f the benefits f a pencil and paper decisin-making prcedure is that it permits peple t deal with mre variables than their minds can generally cmprehend and remember. On the average, peple can keep abut seven ideas in their minds at nce. A wrksheet can be especially useful when the decisin invlves a large number f variables with cmplex relatinships. A realistic example fr many cllege students is the questin “What will I d after graduatin?” A graduate might seek a psitin that ffers specialized training, pursue an advanced degree, r travel abrad fr a year.
A decisin-making wrksheet begins with a brief statement f the prblem that will als help t narrw it. It is imprtant t be clear abut the distinctin between lng-range and immediate gals because lng-range gals ften invlve a different decisin than shrt-range nes. Fcusing n lng range gals, a graduating student might revise the questin abve t “What will I d after graduatin that will lead t a successful career?”
12.Of the fllwing steps, which ccurs befre the thers in making a decisin wrksheet?

Financial regulatins in Britain have impsed a rather unusual rule n the bsses f big banks. Starting next year, any guaranteed bnus f tp executives culd be delayed 10 years if their banks are under investigatin fr wrngding. The main purpse f this “clawback” rule is t hld bankers respnsible fr harmful risk-taking and t restre public trust in financial institutin. Yet fficials als hpe fr a much larger benefit: mre lng-term decisin-making nt nly by banks but als by all crpratins, t build a strnger ecnmy fr future generatins.
“Shrt-termism” r the desire fr quick prfits, has wrsened in publicly traded cmpanies, says the Bank f England’s tp ecnmist, Andrew Haldane. He qutes a giant f classical ecnmies, Alfred Marshall, in describing this financial impatience as acting like “Children wh pick the strawberries ut f their pudding t eat them at nce” rather than putting them aside t be eaten last.
The average time fr hlding a stck in bth the United States and Britain, he ntes, has drpped frm seven years t seven mnths in recent decades. Transient (短期的) investrs, wh demand high quarterly prfits frm cmpanies, can hld back a firm’s effrts t invest in lng-term research r t build up custmer lyalty. This has been called “quarterly capitalism”.
In additin, new digital technlgies have allwed mre rapid trading f equities (股票), quicker use f infrmatin, and thus shrtens attentin spans in financial markets. “There seems t be an advantage f shrt-term thinking at the expense f lng-term investing,” said Cmmissiner Daniel Gallagher f the US Securities and Exchange Cmmissin in speech this week.
In the US, the Sarbanes-Oxley Act f 2002 has pushed mst public cmpanies t delay perfrmance bnuses fr senir executives by abut a year, slightly helping reduce “shrt-termism.” In its latest survey f CEO pay, The Wall Street Jurnal finds that “a substantial part” f executive pay is nw tied t perfrmance.
Much mre culd be dne t encurage “lng-termism,” such as changes in the tax cde and quicker disclsure (披露) f stck acquisitins. In France, sharehlders wh hld nt a cmpany investment fr at least tw years can smetimes earn mre vting rights in a cmpany.
Within cmpanies, the right cmpensatin design can prvide mtivatin fr executives t think beynd their wn time at the cmpany and n behalf f all sharehlders. Britain’s new rule is a reminder t bankers that sciety has an interest in their perfrmance, nt just fr the shrt term but fr the lng term.
19.One reasn fr impsing the new rule is the regulatins _________.
      A. enhance banker’s sense f respnsibility
      B. help crpratins achieve larger prfits
      C. build a new system f financial regulatin
      D. guarantee the bnuses f tp executives
20.What can be learned abut “Shrt-termism” frm the passage?
      A. Children always pursue shrt-term prfits by eating strawberries first.
      B. The influence f it n the cmpanies can be negative in the lng run.
      C. It will bring high prfits fr the cmpany, thus keeping its custmers.
      D. Digital technlgy acts as a dminant cntributr t its wrsening.
21.The US and France examples in paragraph 5 and 6 are used t illustrate ________.
      A. the bstacles t preventing “shrt-termism”
      B. the significance f lng-term thinking
      C. the appraches t prmting “lng-termism”
      D. the ppularity f shrt-term thinking
22.Which f the fllwing wuld be the best title fr the text?
      A. Failure f Quarterly Capitalism
      B. Patience as a Crprate Virtue
      C. Decisiveness Required f Tp Executives
      D. Frustratin f Risk-taking Bankers

25 Alpha is prjected t be the wrld’s largest generatin, with mre than 2bn members. By 2029 nearly $5.5trn will be spent n Alphas a year, predicts Mr McCrindle’s research firm. That presents an pprtunity fr businesses, and fr the marketing firms that advice “hw t prepare fr Gen Alpha”.
Restrictins arund marketing t yungsters prevent many insights. Gvernments regulate advertisements aided at minrs, and stp their persnal data frm being cllected withut their parents’ agreement. 26
But n ne can deny that Alphas are in their frmative years. Attitudes and values change as peple grw up and settle as they cme f age. It will be at least five years befre Alphas are ld enugh fr real differences t be seen between them and thers, accrding t Mr Duffy. Until then, we will knw.

The 17-year-ld making films fun fr deaf children
Fr eight-year-ld Tby, wh is deaf, watching films r TV can smetimes be a bit pintless, because s many f them dn’t have sign language versins. “We have subtitles (字幕) but it ges t fast,” his dad Jard Mills said. But nw, Tby has sme help thanks t an app 11 (develp) by a 17-year-ld student, Mariella Satw, wh created a signing app called SignUp.

Mariella wanted t watch TV shws t help her learn, and she was disappinted 13 (discver) hw few had signed versins. It’s taken a year fr Mariella t develp the technlgy, with lts f help frm ASL teachers and the deaf cmmunity.
The app is available in the US as a brwser extensin — with an interpreter appearing in a bx 14 the film starts playing. It nly wrks n Disney Plus films at the mment, because that’s 15 Mariella thught she culd help the mst children. Jard, 16 wrks at a schl fr deaf children, says it was “exciting” watching Tby use Mariella’s inventin. He says, “Kids are getting infrmatin like any hearing child des.”
Deaf peple in the UK face many f the same barriers when it cmes t cinema and TV. “A hearing persn 17 g t the cinema any time whereas deaf peple have t make sure there’s a suitable viewing a time we’re free,” says 27-year-ld Stacey Wrbys frm Cardiff.
